Create high capacity mobile network solutions

with Nera CityLink

Breaking the capacity barrier...

Traditionally, the infrastructure for mobile networks has been dominated by PDH technology. PDH transmission solutions have a natural ceiling at 16 x 2 Mbit/s capacity and this restriction has meant either costly re-design or equipment duplication in order to meet with increasing capacity requirements of an evolving network. SDH technology has been dominant for the deployment of trunk networks and is now increasingly used to provide the necessary capacity requirements of successful GSM networks, and to cater for the upcoming needs of next generation 2.5G and 3G services. It is not simply capacity that drives the need for SDH but also the inherent properties such as high transmission quality, resilience, true end-to-end performance management and greater choice for the network planner. CityLink represents a significant development in SDH radio link design for mobile networks, providing an extremely flexible family of compact, cost-effective, high capacity products. CityLink offers user configurable modulation schemes enabling choice of capacity and bandwidth utilised and plug-in line interface including a 21 x 2 Mbit/s ADM all within a common Indoor Unit (IDU). Outdoor Units (ODU) are common for all capacities, such that when more capacity is needed, for example: upgrading from 21 x 2 Mbit/s to 155 Mbit/s, this can be achieved on-site without the need for equipment replacement or major network outages.

The Ring Architecture with Sub-Network Connection Protection offers path restoration in the event of a link failure. The ADM is an integral part of the CityLink IDU and can terminate a multiple of 2 Mbit/s circuits or the complete STM-1 signal at each station. The Cross-connect function in the ADM can dynamically terminate any 2 Mbit/s circuits in the STM-1 signal. The network is managed by NEW NMS.

The Drop and Continue chain architecture can be configured as an unprotected system or with Hot Standby protection. The ADM is an integral part of the Indoor Unit and the 2 Mbit/s circuits or a complete STM-1 signal can be terminated at each station. The configuration of the network is handled by NEW NMS management system.

System Configuration
Unprotected (1+0)
CityLink in 1+0 configuration consist of a single Indoor Unit (1RU) and an Outdoor Unit mounted at the antenna. The two units are interconnected by a single coaxial cable. The STM-1 line interface is selectable via plug-in modules.

Protected FD <13 GHz

In frequency bands below 13 GHz, frequency diversity configuration can be used. Indoor part is identical to a hot standby system, while a frequency diversity branching is used in the outdoor part.

Protected HSB
The indoor part of a Hot Standby configuration is made up by two standard IDUs and a Hot Standby Switch unit. The outdoor units consist of a Hot Standby Branching unit and two plug-in transceiver units. All user interfaces are protected via the switching unit. Total rack space is 3RU.

2 x STM-1
The CityLink can be configured for 2x STM-1 operation by using two indoor units, two transceivers and a combiner branching system. Frequency re-use dual polarisation can be used with 32TCM modulation.
