Key: The horror poster for Let Me In uses the mise en scene in ways which conveys to the Genre

audience the genre of the poster and also aspects of the narrative. Narrative Both A tag line is a common convention of a film poster and thus acts as an anchor by reinforcing the meaning created through the Other mise en scene and conveys elements of the narrative to the audience. Linguistically, the words Innocence dies. Abby
doesnt in conjunction with the striking image of a young girl, suggests to the audience that she is one of the main characters and is called Abby. The tag line also conveys elements within the narrative as it suggest that Abby is far older than she appears as she has died a long time ago however; she has been brought back to life but has lost her innocence. Therefore, insinuating the idea that she has come back to life as something evil due to the red typography connoting blood and therefore death. Hence, the typography is codified in ways which suggests to the audience the characters blood lust as she is a vampire. Moreover, this can be seen as a twist on the final girl convention as she is the one who holds supernatural qualities and is subverting the dominant ideology stating that in order to survive one must be pure and innocent. The typography, colours and language used also convey the genre of the poster. The three colours used as the brand identity are red; black and white which are common of the horror genre as they connote blood, death and the loss of innocence. The language used reinforces the genre of the horror poster as it reinforces the concept of loss of innocence. The typography of the title is in sans serif and looks very sharp and rough as if it has been scratched onto a wall which is eerie and reminiscent of the horror genre. Elements of the narrative structure, a theory created by Todorov, are evident within the horror poster as the main image is of a little girl who looks as if she is in pain which is reinforced by the tag line, thus suggesting that she has died and has an inner duality of personalities within herself therefore, displaying the disruption sequence within Todorovs narrative structure. The main image is of a little girl with pale white skin wearing a white dress connotes innocence, purity and life. However, as she is surrounded by darkness and red representing her evil and blood lust side it suggest that she may have dual personalities and an inner conflict. This is in line with the concept of binary opposites created by Levi Strauss as within the main antagonist; there are conflicts within being good vs. evil and life vs. death. It suggest that she is trying to hold on to her innocence from her past life and that she feels vulnerable and confused about which path to take as she is positioned in the foetal position. However, the background suggest that she also has a darker side that she cannot suppress, and no matter how hard she tries to be good the dark side always makes its way back in. She is the antagonist within the horror film as much as she tries to fight it. Propps narrative functions can also be applied to this horror poster as the mise en scene suggests to the audience that the young girl in the centre of the poster is one of the main characters and is thus the antagonist of the film.

The title let me in creates an atmosphere of unease as it appears to be more of a demand and a sense of sudden urgency opposed to a request to be invited in and therefore adhering to the horror genre of the poster. This statement could be interpreted in two ways; it could be that she is demanding to be let into a house as she cannot step foot without being asked due to her being a vampire, or it could be that she is demanding to be let in emotionally and to be accepted in society.

The horror poster has used the traditional conventions of film posters by positioning the principal cast and crew and institutional logos on the bottom of the poster, centre aligned. This is so that the audience recognises that the product being promoted is a film, and the typography suggests that it is a horror genre poster. As this is an example of a major studios production there are stars within the film and therefore they are placed on the poster, as audience who like these actors will see the film solely because they are in it. The film also has a famous director who directed the film Cloverfield, this will also help generate a wider audience creating a buzz within the horror community and thus, aiding the films distribution strategy. As this is a major studios production only one or two production and distribution companies need to be used, as major studios can benefit from being vertically and horizontally integrated. The poster also has the release date of the film so that audiences know when the film is out in the cinemas, and will thus remember when the film is out and may tell their friends via word of mouth hence generating more audiences.
