Summary of Lesson Plan
This is a second grade geography lesson designed for student to learn the basic components of a map. We will read Maps and Mapping by Jinny Johnson, the students will identify the purpose of maps as well as their symbols.

MONDAY

G5.2.6 Identify geographic information within media sources, i.e., maps, books, photographs. G5.2.1 Identify titles and symbols maps. .

Mark specific pages with post-it Pick up book from library.

Students willl compare and contrast the different maps of Nevada by completing a double bubble map and by finding similar locations on both maps using the grid. Students will write their observations of the maps similarities and differences on the hand out. This activity is from Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies, strategy 25 on page 180. This is a second grade geography lesson designed for student to learn how maps are created and the components of a map. This lesson plan is seventh strategy out of the text Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies, page 49, which describes the students going on a walk in order to create their own map.

TUESDAY

G5.2.2 Recognize spatial patterns, i.e., political units, physical features, on a map and globe. G5.2.5 Use a simple letter/number grid system to find a specific location.

Make a grid for both Physical and Political map then make a copy of both map for each student. Compile a list of 8 locations that are close to grid lines for the students to find. Print a copy of the double bubble maps as well.

WEDNESDAY

G5.2.3 Construct a map key from given symbols and choose a map title. G5.2.2 Recognize spatial patterns, i.e., political units, physical features, on a map and globe. Prepare to have clip boards and map outlines for every student.

This is a second grade lesson designed to teach students how to give directions how to get from one point to another. Students are using their knowledge of maps to help create the directions.

THURSDAY

G5.2.4 Give and follow simple oral directions to move from one location to another. G5.2.6 Identify geographic information within media sources, i.e., maps, books, photographs.

Prepare to have clip boards for every student just incase a class walk is needed again.

This is a second grade lesson plan designed to give students the opportunity to explore their abilities to give and receive directions to a specific destination. Students will work in pairs to assess each aspect.

G5.2.4 Give and follow simple oral directions to move from one location to another G5.2.2 Recognize spatial patterns, i.e., political units, physical features, on a map and globe.

FRIDAY

Have parental volunteers lined up to assist with the Adventure Walk.
