WEEK 1 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Jones, M. E., & Shelton, M. R. (2011). Developing Your Portfolio-Enhancing Your Learning and Showing Your Stuff. (2nd ed). Taylor & Francis. This book is a guide to developing a professional or academic portfolio but it also includes great information about philosophy statements, what they are and what they should focus on. Jones & Shelton explain that a philosophy should incorporate the foundations and beliefs of the person or whatever the philosophy is based on. They explain that the statement essentials include: A philosophical foundation- goals and values, theoretical foundation- theories and research, learning- motivation and what is expected, and roles and relationships- nature of relationships with others. The book gives more thorough explanations of those essentials that are useful in guiding a person to create a philosophy statement. Furthermore it defines philosophy, how philosophy came about and then of course leads into the significance of philosophy to portfolio building. The entire basis of the book is philosophy and it has some valuable information on how to create one either for a portfolio or for other endeavors. Keeling, M. (2013). Academic Search Premier This article explains the different types of mission statements and how they can be useful as well as analyzes whether or not they have an actual impact or are actually useful. It explains that a mission statements purpose is to summarize a group, community or business of some sorts goals, intentions, or different contributions. Mary Keeling specifically focuses on school and school library mission statements and believes that the

process of collaborating and creating a mission statement is beneficial in discovering new ideas and uniting people. She also explains briefly that creating a mission statement does not have to be permanent but can change as goals or other things change. The author, Mary Keeling was a president of the Virginia chapter of The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and is currently a supervisor of library media services for Newport News of the Virginia Public School system. The article is from a reputable source, Knowledge Quest, which is a journal published by the American Library Association. Giddens, J. F. (2013), Concepts for nursing practice. St. Louis, MO: Elsevier, Mosby (+ e version). In this book Jean Giddens touches on mission, vision and values related to Health Care Organizations. The book itself is a compilation and explanations of nursing concepts and a guide to increase knowledge and ways to gain knowledge related to nursing. It does not explain fundamentals or pathophysiology specifically but instead teaches concepts and teaches how to use clinical judgment and to think even if you arent sure of all the facts. In one part of the text Giddens discusses the significance of mission statements in relations to Health Care Values. She explains that a mission statement in healthcare is used to explain what the organizations goal is or their values that drive the work they do. Although this topic is not a wide topic of the book it is summarized well in the Health Care Organizations chapter.
