Fracking Outline Name: Tyler Garrett COM 114 Presentation Title: How a Unique Water Pressurized Drilling Technique

Changes Our World Specific Purpose: : I am digging into the deepest parts of fracking research to see how humans benefit financially, if it should be legal, and if it is ethical method of oil drilling for humans to proceed with. Thesis Statement: With the development of new machinery, new drilling techniques like Fracking has increased the amount of natural gas that can be extracted from the earth, creating more resources but harming the environment. INTRODUCTION: I. Attention Getter: Who would have ever thought of drilling into the earth with highly pressurized water, to find natural gas. Fracking is a fresh drilling technique that oil companies are incorporating into their companies daily. According to CNN Money, places that were ceasing to grow economically like Northwest Pennsylvania are turning into energy powerhouses as a result of fracking (Cable News Network, 2013). Credibility Statement: Using a car every day and drinking water that is supposed to be pure, I wanted to learn more about how we obtain our natural resources and it they are safe. Relating to the Audience: After questioning fifty men from Fairway Cooperative on campus, I learned that seventy percent (thirty five) of the men own their own vehicle that use oil. I also learned that one hundred percent of the guys drink water without using a purifier. With the development of new machinery, new drilling techniques like Fracking has increased the amount of natural gas that can be extracted from the earth, creating more resources but harming the environment.

To begin with, I will explain what the technique fracking is, which is a procedure that was recently discovered by oil companies. I. Hydraulic fracturing is a method that consists of pulling out natural gas from rocks. A. Fracking creates a new way for humans to reach natural gasses that wouldnt be possible without this unique drilling technique.

1. Fracking pierces shale rock layers lying deep beneath the earths surface and highly pressurized fluid is forced through the rock (Admin in hydraulic fracturing, 2007). 2. The piercing in the rock creates a way for natural gas to escape by traveling through the air (Admin in hydraulic fracturing, 2007). B. As the fracking occurs over the course of a month, gas rises to the surface in greater quantities and is trapped by the oil drillers (Admin in hydraulic fracturing, 2007). 1. As a result of the gas rising there are chances of it escaping into the atmosphere. a. According to Earthjuctice.org fracking is poisoning our air since the gas is leaking out when trying to extract it. b. Fracking is supposedly putting Americans at risk and could possibly be poisoning our water supply but earth justice does not have a great amount of facts to back their claims. 2. The channels that fracking occurs through are filled with cement and when the fracking is finished to ensure everyones safety (Cable News Network, 2013). Now that I have explained what fracking is and some of the possible downsides, I would like to show you how it greatly impacts Americas economy. II. Fracking has had a noticeable effect on businesses and companies that arent even directly involved with fracking. A. According to the environmental protection agency natural gas-fired electricity consumption has over doubled in the past five years alone, resulting in a need for more employees (Admin in Hydraulic Fracturing, 2007). 1. With more employees needed to help retrieve enough gas from the earth more jobs are created and more money is placed into Americans pockets. 2. With Americans having more money they can help support fracking which is overall cheaper than the older way of drilling for oil. B. The benefits of a rapid expanded energy product like natural gas would do more harm than good (State Impact, 2013). C. With America growing every year and energy needs increasing fracking is a solution that produces a great amount of good for society with a small price.

After telling everyone and retaining and understanding of Fracking, I would like to close by reviewing a couple main points.

CONCLUSION I. Restate Thesis: With the development of new machinery, new drilling techniques like Fracking has increased the amount of natural gas that can be extracted from the earth, creating more resources but harming the environment. Closing Statement: Fracking is a wise drilling technique for Americans economically but in health related terms it may be detrimental and only time will tell. References
