Certification Checklist

Candidates seeking initial certification in New York State must: 1. _________ Complete SUNY Geneseo Degree Program Leading to NY State Certification (Including Student Teaching and Required Seminars: Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence and Prevention (SAVE), Dignity for All Students (DASA), and for students in the Childhood with Special Education Program: Meeting the Needs of Students with Autism. 2. _________ Apply for New York State Teacher Certification through the TEACH website. The Certification Application is on the TEACH system within the NYSED website. Please first read our instructions, found under Advisement at http://dean.geneseo.edu (left-hand menu). For questions about applying for certification contact the Graduation Records Office in Erwin by calling (585) 2455543. 3. __________ Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check - All candidates for initial certification and all new school employees must be cleared through FBI fingerprinting and criminal background check. The costs for the fingerprinting and the background check are incurred by the candidate. 4. __________ Successfully Complete Required New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) Adolescence Education Exams _________Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) _________Educating All Students Test (EAS) _________Content Specialty Test (CST) Take the test for your content major _________ edTPA (complete the one for your content major) Early Childhood/Childhood Education OR Childhood Education Exams _________Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) _________Educating All Students Test (EAS) _________Content Specialty Test (CST) Multi-subjects (right now there is only one of these tests, but starting in late spring 2014 there will be two required, one for early childhood and one for childhood. To avoid having to take both tests, you must take and pass the old CST multi-subjects test before the new ones are offered.) _________ edTPA (elementary OR early childhood) Childhood with Special Education Exams _________Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) _________Educating All Students Test (EAS) _________Content Specialty Test (CST) Multi-subjects _________Content Specialty Test (CST) Students with Disabilities _________ edTPA (elementary)

5. _________ Submit your verification of your online Certification Application, with processing fee ($10 check made payable to SUNY Geneseo or a $10 cash receipt from the Student Accounts office), to Registrars Office, Erwin 102.
The required verification is found by returning to TEACH Home and selecting Account Information under the Inquiry Links heading. This will bring up a menu box, where you should select Certificates and then Go. A screen print of this page must be submitted. Please also write your G# and graduation term (i.e. May 2014) at the top of the page.
