Characteristics of Effective Mentors

Effective mentors should possess strong interpersonal skills, exemplary practice, credibility with teachers and administrators, a desire to learn, and leadership capabilities. Additional characteristics of effective mentors are as follows: Willing to serve Approachable Proactive Role model Sensitive to needs of others Positive Patient Encouraging Helpful Confidential Nurturing/caring Accepting Enthusiastic Experienced Reflective Listener Communicator Team-oriented Other responsibilities of a mentor include: Demonstrates knowledge of the Educator Accomplished Practices Knows and shares the culture and climate of the school and any unwritten rules and procedures Provides feedback and strategies to the new educator.
