MINERALS WE USE EVERYDAY AND THEIR LOCATION IN UTAH Utahs Treasure Hunt of Minerals 4th Grade Standard 3 Objective 1

1. This mineral begins with the letter G and was used to build the LDS Temple, our Utah State Capital, the Conference Center and This is the Place Monument. It is found up a skiing canyon in the Salt Lake County area. At Google street view you will see all the outcroppings of this mineral on the side of the mountain.

2. Patio pavers are made with this mineral. It begins with the letter L and is found up a canyon in Utah County that is a popular spot for hikes during the summer and ice climbers during the winter. It is named for its extra long water drop. At Google street view, it looks like a long way down to the parking lot and Highway 189. 3. This site is so gigantic even astronauts can see it from space. This mineral that begins with the letter G is used in our computers and cell phones. At the street view those flat rectangular white boxes on the side of the hill are really portable jobsite trailers! 4. This mountain mining site is in Tooele County and is named after crazy kitty or _ _ _ _ _ _ _ mountain. The mineral mined here begins with an F and it is used in something we use twice a day to clean our teeth! 5. This site is found closer to Southern Utah and the mineral we get from here also begins with the letter G. We see this mineral used everyday in the construction of homes. It is used in walls. At Google streetview you will see all the buildings and large storage tanks used to house this mineral. 6. Another site that is in Southern Utah is where they mine this mineral that begins with the letter B. This mineral is able to withstand super high temperatures and for that purpose it is used in making components of the space shuttle. On the street view you will notice that there are seperation/cooling ponds. 7. You will find this mineral at a popular tourist location east of Salt Lake City. Olympic venues are found here and there used to be lots of mines too. This mineral begins with a P and is used to make inexpensive jewelry. It has another name it goes by too_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. 8. The location of this mineral is in the central part of the state and it begins with the letter Q. Most of the time this is a clear mineral and that is why it is used in making glass.

9. You would know when you got near this mine, because it would smell like rotten eggs! This mineral starts with the letter S and is used in making what we put on our lawn and gardens to make them grow. At the street view you will notice 3 tailing ponds. 10. Our last location is also in the central western part of our state. The mineral from this site helps both humans and animals. When we have gas or upset stomachs this mineral is used in a product to help us feel better and it is put in animal feed to help them grow strong bones. The mineral starts with the letter C. This mine is named after an extinct animal, the Wooly Mammoth.
