Making History Matter Assignment (10%) Length of Assignment: 750-1000 words Due Date: February 24, 2014 ESSAY PROMPT: You have been hired by a major online journal to serve as the history specialist. The editor has given you your first assignment. You are to write an article that addresses the topic below: Write an article that argues that the social and economic impact of rubber has been transformative in a global perspective. Your article should address four key areas: 1) Illustrate the importance of rubber in the world today; 2) Discuss the history of rubber i.e. when and why it became an important product, perhaps focusing on one or two specific locations of rubber production; 3) Highlight the negative consequences that rubber production has had on those societies that produced rubber during the colonial period; 4) Discuss the continued impact that rubber production has in the global economy today. As the history specialist you are to undertake academic research for this assignment. This means that you should reference no less than 4 academic articles or academic books for your work. Because this is a public document that will be published online, you should impress the editor with your comprehensive knowledge of the history of rubber, its impact, and legacy while remaining within your word limit.
