Why did Battus seek the oracle? Speech impediment or political crisis? Varies from story to story- political, murder, conflict o Direction: Different ones- geographic, sacred animals (Battus led by crow), riddles. [Most colonial narratives end here when the weakest reach the shores]. Weakest giving the task to map out the colony, give tasks to people, distribute goods and name the city o Dead weakest: new context for story to be told; cult formed- weakest becomes new hero to be worshipped of the colony Most colonists were unwanting and not-accepting of their new lifestyle- solving of a problem rather than a choice o Contradiction it the odyssey where Odysseus claims that the land of Cyclopes was a good land to colonize Constant reminder to the new people of their old ways; narrative used several times in the new worlds. Significance of the individual and impact on community; riddling- compared to Delphic consultation and the need to resolve a problem; marriage seen as the coming together of the Greek settlers and the new people

There is always a cause to find a colony o Prophecy gives dictation and directions to find the colony o Following direction/orders = success o In all versions of the narrative, the oracle is sought out and spoken to Colonial foundation o Not spoken about much in many texts o Bits and pieces forms the process o Weakest remembered for leading = cult Narratives important to Greek identity and how they viewed their forefathers

The colony has commonalities o Representation of god and how they guide individuals to land Herodotus- contested source o Relied on heresy o Reliability? Bias? o Places own personal views on his account o Agrees largely with Pindars claim- journey to reaching manhood
