Malaysia is a rapidly developing country that required massive amount of energy to move this country.

Although Malaysia is one of the most developed country in ASEAN, Malaysia has problem with energy sustainability, efficiency, and reliability. This are a problem in most part of the world and every governmental organization, NGO and individual are trying to solve this problem. One of the problem facing Malaysia is maintaining energy reliability. This problem become a major issue in 3rd of august 1996 when Malaysia is shocked with 12 hours of total power outage which effect people from every walk of life. This is caused by a problem at Paka Power Station at Terrenganu. Other than that, This power outage caused a nationwide chaos and most industries in Malaysia sustained a heavy loss because they cannot run the industries. The FFM(Federation Of Malaysia Manufacturer) estimated the losses suffer by the industrial sector is more than 123 million Ringgit while TNB(National Energy Company) also sustained about 13 million ringgit of losses.

Beside that, Malaysian also having problem with energy efficiency. This is because Malaysian government noticed that Malaysia energy efficiency is lower compared to developed countries in Asia such as Singapore and Japan. The main problem is many industries in Malaysia rather take a cheaper alternative than spent some money in maintaining energy efficiency. One of the example is most factories use older machineries. Beside that, the domestic electricity also at a low efficiency. This is because many people in Malaysia rather save cost rather than maintaining energy efficiency. Energy sustainability in Malaysia also at a very high risk. This is because Malaysia energy supplies is too dependent on fossil fuel such as natural gas, oil, and coal that make up about 80% of Malaysia electricity generation while the rest is hydroelectric energy and biomass. The problem is Malaysia oil and gas reserved is exploited too much that in the future the oil and gas reserve can finish while Malaysia coal fired power plant is mostly depend on imported coal from Indonesia and Australia. This mean that Malaysia will soon run out of fossil fuel.

This issue is been a priority issue that need to be solve if Malaysia going to become a develop country in Asia. One of the solution need to be taken by the government to solve this issue is by privatizing the national electricity company and turn the company into a GLC(Government Link Company).By privatizing this company, the efficiency in the national electricity supply increases. Beside that, TNB should give a few contract to private companies to set up IPP(Independent Power Plant)which generate electricity to be sold to the TNB. By doing so, blackout incident around the country should decreases and this should be a good progress to become a country which achieve a very high electricity reliability. Many government agencies and NGO are trying to achieve high electricity efficiency. One of the initiative should be taken is by decommission old power plant. This is because old power plant need more resources then new power plant to generate the same amount of electricity.

Beside that, replacing deteriorating power cable and transformer which is not efficient compared to new cables and transformers. Beside that, school and the mass media should promote energy consumption such as recycling, save electricity and conserve energy. This can increase awareness within the society to become a country with high energy efficiency.

Lastly, both government and private sector need to do R&D(Research and development) into renewable energy. Renewable energy such as biomass, tidal energy, hydroelectric have a very good potential in the future. One of the initiative that can be taken is by subsidized renewable energy power generation such as solar panel, wind turbine and biomass electricity generation. Beside that, the government need to set up an agency to research about nuclear energy which has a very high potential in the long run sustainable energy supply.

The conclusion is we need to focus on solving this energy problem to create a better future to the next generation.
