Ensuring that all equipment is loaded onto the transport safely Lack of knowledge of site.

Multiple staff members to be present when loading/unloading equipment, any potentially dangerous items to be appropriately packed/stored Preliminary visit undertaken by ourselves, scout out the area for any potential dangers, acquire any helpful materials i.e. maps, guides etc. Disembarkation to take place in the safety of the car park. Children not to leave coach until staff have made sure the area is clear, staff to disembark first and children to follow once safety is ensured.

Children or staff risking injury from other traffic/ vehicles while embarking/ disembarking Children coming to harm while manoeuvring through the public vehicle spaces.

Children to each be given a buddy before entering the underground system, each adult to be assigned a group of 5-8 children. Hi-vis jacket for children and staff, staff to perform head/name-count before moving from or to any area.

Facilities in use

Unclean public facilities

Children and staff coming into contact with dangerous/ hazardous materials.

Staff to ensure toilets and other facilities are suitable for use by children. Staff to supervise groups of children when making use of public facilities to deter dangerous behaviour. Ensure that there are no more than 7 children to each adult, and that each adult is aware at all times which children are in their group. Any available extra staff within the school to support if possible.

Ratio of adults to children insufficient.

Children not being managed or supervised effectively

Individual or groups of children being disruptive and unruly. Outdoor activities Risky outdoor behaviour; children drinking from water fountains, ingesting mud or other materials, being hurt by thorns, nettles, animals etc.

Injury to themselves or others Risk to health of children and helpers.

Ensuring good staff-pupil ratio and suitable/experienced staff members chosen to support. Give children a thorough briefing of what is considered dangerous/unacceptable behaviour, and the potential harm caused by these behaviours. No eating or drinking in between outdoor activities, until children have washed their hands.

Slips, trips and falls, flying Frisbee/outdoor objects. physical activity

Personal injury, particularly sprains, strains, fractures, cuts and grazes.

Pre-trip visit undertaken by staff members where areas of deep water are noted. Extra precaution to be taken around these areas. Ensure all staff members have some First Aid knowledge and equipment.

General Consideratinos

Allergic Reactions

Children and staff with moderate to severe allergies

Check risk of allergic reaction beforehand in relation to pollen/ hayfever. Ensure that any children with allergies are noted, and not engaged in high-risk behaviour. Also ensure that any relevant medical supplies are on-hand in case of allergic reactions. Again, ensuring that all staff are aware of which children are in their group at regular intervals. Having a sound-off before moving to and from any areas. Having children hold hands with a buddy, any children not paired to hold hands with a teacher/staff member.
