Laura Geis Second Grade ADHD Lesson Plan October 14, 2012 EDU 420 Teaching Exceptional Children

Rationale: This lesson is appropriate because students must be able to understand the difference between even and odd number. They must be able to identify these numbers consistently through the year, so you must be able to give them a foundation for them to start from. This will be challenging for some, but for the students with ADHD, I will have them focus only on odd numbers at first, then once they finish, I will give them a separate worksheet for them to focus on even numbers, so they dont feel overwhelmed by multiple instruction. Introduction: Today we are going to learn the difference between odd and even numbers, and then be able to identify them during a fun activity. (Worksheet provided below) Goals The students will be able to understand the difference between odd and even numbers. They will be able to identify and show their understanding on a worksheet that has multiple odd and even numbers on it.

Objectives 1. 2. The students will be able to define odd and even numbers and provide examples. They will be able to show their understanding on the worksheet. If students get done early, and opportunity for peer teaching will be provided.

Activities 1. Let the students settle in to their seats for a couple minutes. (provides the students with ADHD and ADD a chance to refocus) (Students can work on other subjects or read, but no playing around, must be seated) (make sure the student with ADD OR ADHD is seated near where you are teaching, by the desk, so you can monitor them continuously) (AVOID DISTRACTING AREAS FORTHEM) Ask the students to put their things away and get out their math notebook and a pencil. Review: Do a quick review on dividing numbers a. Numbers divided by two; done in previous lesson last week

A quick review helps the students revisit ideas that they may have not remembered, but also doesnt overwhelm the ADD or ADHD student, allows them to do a quick rethink 1. DO NOT SPEND MUCH TIME ON; students will lose focus Ask the students if they know what an Even number is a. Definition: EVEN any number that can be divided by 2 b. Examples: 8,12,14,22 i. Any number that ENDS in a 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0 1. Students should write examples and definition down in math notebook Ask the students if they know what an Odd number is a. Definition: ODDA number that cannot be divided by two b. Examples: 3,15, 21, 99 i. Must write in notes NOTE: AS YOUR STUDENTS ARE WRITING NOTES, MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENTS WITH ADD OR ADHD ARE WRITING THE NOTES DOWN CORRECTLY Show a couple examples on the board a. 22iseven b. Sisodd Ask the students if they have any questions Call on two students to pass out white boards and dry erase markers to the class for a small classroom activity. You will give the students a number on the board Ask the students to all say the number Then on their own board write down odd or even a. This will help you see where the understanding level of each child is. b. Use the following numbers: i. 42 even ii. 55 odd iii. 100,250 even iv. 9,000,001 odd v. lodd vi. 798 even Once the students have an understanding of these, pass out the worksheets and explain what you want it to look like. (MUST MODIFY THE ASSIGNMENT IF NEEDED) a. You must color the bubbles that contain odd numbers blue b. You must color the bubbles that contain even numbers green i. For your student will ADD or ADHD, give them one worksheet. 1. And have them focus only on the even numbers 2. Once they are done have them bring it to you 3. If their understanding is good, you can give them a different worksheet (the same one as before) but only focus on the odd numbers a. This is so they dont feel overwhelmed by multiple instructions and they can stay focused on one task instead of multiple tasks which will overload the child. As the students are working on the worksheet, make sure you are constantly monitoring the students progress. a. Acknowledge the students progress right when they do something right b. Positively talk to the students i.

c. Encourage positive self-talk so they can think positively about him or herself 15. If some of the other students get done early, have them peer-teach the other students that are still working on the worksheet. a. This will help the students communicate what they just learned to another student. 16. Once everyone is done with the worksheet, ask the students, as a class, define what an odd and even numbers are and give me one example of each. 17. Review odd and even numbers again tomorrow for full understanding. Assessment The assessment will be how well the students were able to understand the difference of an odd and even number. By using the worksheet, the students will have to show that they understood by using therightcolortofilllntherightbubble.Theywillalsohavetotellmeattheendofthelessonplan, what the definitions of and odd and even number are and tell me what numbers are even and odd. This will reinstate that they have full understanding of the material/subject.
