Reflection
As a result from taking this class, I have learned an extensive amount of knowledge about the United States Government. With each lesson pertaining to the importance of our governments formation and how it continues to works today. In the United States, we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. For what seems like a simple motto, I have learned through this class just how complex our governments system truly is. From the creation of the U.S Constitution and its twenty-seven Amendments, the Founding Fathers established a system of government called representative democracy. With power being such a delicate element they wanted a nation ruled by laws, not by men. The U.S Constitution soon became the countrys supreme law of land by carefully dividing certain powers between the state and the federal government. This well-thought out balance of powers brought both limitations to the federal government while also empowering the individual citizen with a series of protected rights. In its uniqueness, the constitution not only gives freedom but also protect its people economically, religiously, politically and socially. Written more than 200 years ago, this document is still the backbone that allows America to be an example of freedom and righteousness to the rest of the world. Unlike any other government doctrine, the Constitution has remained an active system of government, a living document whose interpretation has adapted with the changes of American society. many other countries, citizens in the United States have the power to shape their government and its policies. In that sense, I believe that the free people of this nation must take responsibility to learn about important public issues and get more involved in our communities. This class has helped me realize the importance of learning about American government. For it not only helps you understand your rights and responsibilities but it allows you to fully participate in the American political process. With that being said, I plan to continue learning about United States government and their ongoing involvement in our daily lives. In addition, I hope to take what I have learned from this class and make a difference in my community. From my service project at the Humane Society it is easy to say I have a passion for animals. Over past summers, I have even been involved with a number of protests against animal abuse in zoos, marine parks, and circuses in the hopes to inform the local government in promoting liberation for these inhumanely treated animals. Yet, I am also a strong supporter for helping preserve a clean environment. Therefore, if I were to changes things in my community it would most likely be through environmental programs. In todays society, many people are afraid to change or start a positive movement with the fear that nothing will come of it. I disagree. Even though some would claim this to be unrealistic, I believe that even a small change in our community can make a big difference over time, especially when it comes to going green. For this reason, my first plan of action will be to spread the word about the dangers of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and suggest not only proper ways to go green but information about getting involved in the many government environmental programs that are longing for people like you and I to help support this growing cause.

My view of the government has changed since the beginning of the semester. My initial opinion of the government and its duties were basically protecting our rights and collecting tax money. After developing a broader perspective and deeper understanding of the governments endless responsibilities, I have definitely gained more respect for the President, U.S senate, members of the House, and other ranking individuals. It takes an excessive amount of background knowledge and experience, strong communication, and critical problem solving, when it comes to successfully running a free country. But even with that being said, I still believe the U.S political system and its leaders who govern, both locally and nationally, need to improve in many aspects to better the livelihood of its supporting people. One topic in particular would be focusing on the budget and therefore decreasing the national debt. Professor Ferlo did an excellent job covering almost every aspect of the U.S Government however, I would have loved to have spent more time discussing the power of public opinion, political socialization, and civil rights. I love evaluating the process to why and how people speak out against certain issues. This class was very informative and has made a big impression on the plans that I have for my life. The United States government is unlike any other system around the world. If we learn and understand the ins and outs of politics, we, meaning you and I, can make a difference and that right there is a sign of Americas greatness!
