REGIONAL CONFERENCE RECAP BY SOROR MARCELLA MORGAN CHI ZETA CHAPTER

The 72nd Midwestern Regional Leadership Conference recently came to a close. The leadership conference was held in Des Moines, Iowa at the Embassy Suites Hotel from April 3 6, 2014. This conference was filled with leadership training, fellowship, and fun. The Sorors of the State of Oklahoma attended with good numbers and made a lasting impression on the region. It was really nice to see ladies from the various undergraduate and graduate chapters of Oklahoma, as well as the delegations from other states in the region.

This was the debut conference for the entire delegation from Lambda Alpha Chapter of Langston University. They came strong and looked and presented themselves in a positive and inspiring way. The sorors of Lambda Alpha competed in the Regional Stroll Competition and gave a great performance that was fun to watch. They had an exciting array of musical selections and a crowd pleasing set of strolls. As one of the winning teams, they received a gift card after the competition was over. The stroll-off attendees, especially the sorors of Oklahoma, showed much love to the chapter.

Way to go Lambda Alpha!

Lambda Alpha, also took home one of the most prestigious awards that a chapter can win: Undergraduate Chapter of the Year. It was such a proud moment for Basileus Lashonda Taylor and her fellow delegates, as well as their sponsoring graduate chapter. Their undergraduate advisor, Soror LaTonya Anderson and the sponsoring graduate chapter president, Soror Curtesia Smith, were present to witness this honor. I was so proud of each of them. Congratulations to the sorors who were in attendance and those that were unable attend the leadership conference. Way to go Lambda Alpha! At the Awards Banquet, Graduate Chapter, Chi Zeta also received accolades. Chi Zeta Chapter of Oklahoma City has been active for over 50 years. The chapter was presented with two awards for the 2013 Top Teams within the region for their fundraising efforts with the March of Dimes. Marcella Morgan, the March of Dimes Committee Chair accepted the Midwestern Region 2013 Top Teams-Oklahoma Graduate Chapter Award and 2013 Top Regional Fundraising Teams-5th Place Award on the chapters behalf. Chi Zeta Chapter received several awards for their March of Dimes efforts at the previous regional conference as well. Chi Zeta Chapter of Oklahoma City was also presented with the Graduate Chapter of the Year plaque. Winning this award was a very surprising, honorable and humbling experience for myself and the other sorors present as members of this great chapter. Zetas should strive to do their best and work hard for the love of Zeta at all times. It was so awesome to see both an undergraduate and a graduate chapter from the Outstanding State of Oklahoma take home the highest honors awarded at the 72nd Midwestern Regional Leadership Conference. The above is proof; the Sorors of Oklahoma Showed Up, and Showed Out!

Escorting the Grand

BY SOROR FARRAH SPARKS LAMBDA ALPHA CHAPTER

My time this year at our Midwestern Regional Conference was such an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to escort our 24th International Grand Basileus Mary Breaux Wright. Soror Wright is such a wonderful lady. She is definitely a true example of a Zeta woman. Soror Wright is like a Zeta history book. When I say she knows her history; she knows her history and Im saying; she knows her history. Nobody loves Zeta as much as she does, and her impeccable demeanor expresses that, as well as her words. Spending time with her made me realize why I became a Zeta and why I am glad that I did. During the conference and in between our meetings, I actually sat down with her and got to know her personally. It felt as if I already knew her. In addition, towards the end of the conference, she expressed to me how proud she was of me and all of my accomplishments. It felt as if I had won the lottery. Receiving that compliment from her meant everything to me. I am so blessed to have received this opportunity. I want to especially thank my graduate advisor, Soror LaTonya Anderson for everything. Another special thanks goes to our Oklahoma State Director, Soror Artisha Woody, for giving me the opportunity to escort our Grand. As an undergraduate, not many people can say that they have received such an honor. You [Soror Woody] gave me the correct information in order for me to be a great escort and I thank you for trusting and believing in me. It puts a smile on my face to know that I made you proud.

Soror Farrah Sparks was awarded a regional scholarship at the conference

E Motions, Who You Gonna Call?

BY SOROR DANNE JOHNSON CHI ZETA CHAPTER

When emotions are running high and the shouting begins... you need a phylacter. When you are feeling some kinda emotion about the motion... you need a phylacter. When you're all upset because "they" act like you shouldn't bring it up... you need a phylacter. Some bespectacled Soror with books and bylaws. Someone that knows her place, jumping in only when invited and always slowing the conversation. Someone protecting the rights of the one against the many, while aiding the progress of business. That's your Phylacter. I would like to encourage the phylacters in the state to join their nearest chapter of parliamentarians. The groups are fun and educational. Working with Bylaws and Robert's Rules takes practice and these groups do just that. They practice and discuss the rules. In September you should hear from your chapter phylacter with updates from the Boul. I expect that there will be bylaw changes that will necessitate chapter and regional bylaw changes. If there are questions about these matters please feel free to contact me at 917-734-3290 or at at136th@yahoo.com. Let me know if you are interested in a summer workshop on "All Things Phylacter"

In addition to being the Embellishment Coordinator for the state, Soror Danne Johnson is your Midwestern Regional Phylacter

A Night to Remember
BY SOROR FARRAH SPARKS LAMBDA ALPHA CHAPTER

April 29, 2014, Langston Universitys division of Student Affairs held its annual Student Leadership Awards (SLAs). The Lambda Alpha chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was nominated for two awards: Student Organization of the Year Award and the Sorority of the Year Award. The Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes an organization that has significantly impacted the development, growth, and sustainability of its membership and is dedicated to the advancement of Langston Universitys student body. The Sorority of the Year Award goes to the sorority that has demonstrated and displayed significant contributions to the campus community through leadership, citizenship, and service. The Lambda Alpha chapter, won both awards. Winning the Undergraduate Chapter of the Year in our region was one thing, but winning Student Organization of the Year and Sorority of the Year has Lambda Alpha, literally on a natural high. We would especially like to thank our advisor, Ms. LaTonya Anderson, for pushing us collectively to make our chapter excel in everything that we do. It puts a smile on our faces to know that we are living up to our four principles that were set by our five lovely pearls.
