A way to save the world. Potable Water Systems.

Purpose/ Background of the Activity

IET 120 Spring 2014

What does the group believe the purpose of this project is and whom it is to benefit? Why would it be necessary to include so many people to a group, at distance, to complete the activity? The purpose of this project is for the student to realize how lucky they are, and how there is several societies have a lack of some of the basic needs like water. The students will also realize how they can also help, and how there are easy ways and very good ideas that can save the world. Part One Customer (society) Who is the customer? What country/ global society did you research? What is their need? Mexico, believe or not is a third world country and there are several rural areas with a lack of potable or even just clean water. The product we are developing is going to help some of this people have an easier access to potable water. The society we made our research on is called Veracruz and is one of the states in Mexico is a state with most of its surface close to the coast and the golf of Mexico and has one of the highest precipitations percentages in Mexico. We centered our research in one of the counties of this state called Mixtla de Altamirano which is one the poorest county in the state and the forth in the country with 97% of their population living in horrible conditions. The population of Mixtla de Altamirano consists of 9,752 persons where 10 regions of the county have no access to potable water. Their need is a system and product that can use this rainwater and filtered it and store it in cheap and easy way were this rainwater can be transformed to potable water. Product Design and Function Explanation What product did the group decide to produce for the customer? Does it follow the guidelines of being a sustainable material and an acceptable alternative energy source for the geographic area? List data that proves it would be acceptable. Our group decided on a product that uses the rainwater and filters it into making it potable. This system is very useful in a society like the one we chose because of the high percentage of rains each year. The materials are very sustainable because half of our product can be make by the customer itself with every

material available, to direction the water into our filtering system. Our product doesnt use any type of energy but gravitational force, pushing the water down and into our product, which with the use of minerals will filter the water and stored it in a plastic container that will give you potable water. Product Drawings and Prototype Images The drawings, if done by hand and scanned, must neat with all measurements in order to build the product. The prototype does not need to be functioning but must be a good model representation of the drawings.

This is a look of what would be inside the water filter.

Part Two Manufacturing Business Information -What is the Name? PWS of Mexico which means Potable water systems of Mexico. -What do you manufacture? We manufacture water purifiers for third world countries, we specialize in low cost high quality purifiers for the daily use. -What processes do you use at your facility? (example: casting, extruding, etc..) Recycled polymer materials (Polyethylene terephthalate) mixing, Parison Extrusion, Blow Molding, Trimming, Testing, labeling, assembling, Stacking and distributing. -What are your primary materials to construct your product? The primary materials to construct the product are: PVC TUBES, Recycled Plastic, aluminum, filter, carbon, sulfure and couple other chemical elements to put in the filter to purify the water, thin and thick sand, gravel, rock, sink focet. -How do you get those materials? Shupan Recycling: Recycle plastic

Locations -Why did you pick this location? (cheap labor is not acceptable)

IET 120 Spring 2014

Distributing

We picked Seattle to be the location of my company because they are the best industrial city and its growth has no limit which will lead to a exponential growth in the manufacturing sector in the future. Because of the growth of Seattles manufacturing business a lot of people are moving there hence looking for jobs, this is the reason Seatelle is also leading Americas cities in Job growth. Seattle is a suburban area close to the ocean and airports which will facilitate the transportation of our product. The primary material companies for the fabrication of our poducts are based in Seattle, lowering our costs in transportation. -Find a building location. (one that is on the market ready to move into or property) The location will be Seattle, Washington 6th avenue south 6133 a excellent location perfect for manufacturing companies, with great downtown exposure and amenities without the high cost, 2 mins from I-5 and Hwy 99 just 5 minutes from downtown and the docks. With 16,500 sq ft of versatile office and retail space, ample parking, dock high and street level acces. - if you use property, you will need to list square footage of the building proposed to build AND cost per square foot for a total cost. For international, this may be challenging but not impossible, look for overseas real estate, abroad, etc. -What are the major roadways to and from your facility? How are you getting material to and product from the plant for shipping? What are distances, etc. The major roadways are I-5 and highway 99 and the highway 99 will lead to downtown, the airport and to the ocean which will facilitate the transportation of our materials. The transportation methods we will use will be mainly, terrestrial transportation within Seattle with the use of trucks and pickups. The products will be shipped by ship and airplane depending on the size of the cargo. -What other infrastructures are available? Because our product will be mainly shipped to Mexico we will have a storage facility located in Mexico where the product will arrive and be stored until transportation to the final destination. -Any other information that may be important. (REMEMBER: This is for a place in the United States and another in another global location around the world. You should be looking at the same things.just different places.)

Demographics

IET 120 Spring 2014

-List the population types. (genders, race, etc..) Do your population research. ( Dont forget the numbers..) According to USA.com seattle has 49% man and 51% woman and the last time this study was done was in 2010. Seattle is a very diversified city where you can find all the type of race and the prove is also in usa.com.
White: Black: Hispanic: Asian: Native (American Indian, Alaska Native, Hawaiian Native, etc.): 422,870 (69.48%, #536) 48,316 (7.94%, #24) 40,329 (6.63%, #249) 84,215 (13.84%, #34)

7160( 1.18%)

This table show the diversity of population and race of people in Seattle and this will help my company maybe grow outside the us and mexico and maybe expand in the future to Europe and the middle east and specifically third world countries.

What factors did you take into consideration? -employment rate The employement rate In seattle is one of the best ones in the country since seattle was rated as the number industrial city in the usa and the employement rate will keep going up and for the better of the workers.

-any other demographics you may find necessary to justify your position and location choice it is close to the ocean and the airports which will facilitate the transportation of my material that will fashion my product and will facilitate the transportation of my workers since there is highways and they will not have to struggle to go to work. Close to the ocean which means we will not have to pay for the transportation of the material to another state since it come to me straight away. Big city which mean attract the big companies and the rich people that are planning to use their money and develop something.

REMEMBER This is a research project and you will need NUMBERS to justify. You will need to think and plan on what you present as proper justification. You will need to think of more possibilities than what I have listed. Dont forget to list where you found these numbers.was there a state, county website or publication of the data?
