Opinion - Letters to the Editor

China’s objection to Dr. Singh’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh is

shocking. Its claim that his visit to the State for election campaign will stir up
trouble in the disputed area is unacceptable.

Opinion - Letters to the Editor

On teaching

This refers to the editorial “Teaching without torture” (April 20). Acts of
brutality and corporal punishment in the name of disciplining children are a curse
on our education system. They add to the misery of children who are already
suffering, thanks to heavy academic syllabus and loads of books. Teachers should
be trained to handle children.

It is not enough to have laws and rules banning corporal punishment in schools.
They should be implemented strictly. Torture of children in schools is nothing
new. The media are now in the forefront of exposing the social evil, which is why
we are becoming aware of the issue.

Opinion - Letters to the Editor

There is a conspicuous absence of discussion on the postal savings bank (POSB) in

the editorial. This is now an agency function of the post office performed on
behalf of the Finance Ministry. It serves the rural people where banking facility
is not available. With the advent of the new economic policy, corporate banks and
other scheduled banks gave higher interest rates thus depriving the rural populace
of the opportunity of getting better returns.
Hope the new government will increase the interest rates on POSB schemes and thus
protect the interests of rural depositors.

Opinion - Letters to the Editor

The LTTE is an organisation that has been waging a war against the Sinhala
domination over the ethnic Tamil minority for decades. But the al-Qaeda is a
terrorist organisation.
The need of the hour is evacuation of the trapped Tamil civilians from the no-war
zone. Only a temporary ceasefire can facilitate it.

P. Sermuga Pandian,
Madurai-3.

MADURAI IS already attracting a lot of inland and

foreign tourists. Despite tremendous efforts by Department of Tourism and travel
agents, Madurai is not particularly tourist friendly due to lack of infrastructure
and basic amenities. To make Madurai tourist friendly, money exchange centres
should be installed at the railway station and all popular tourist sites. People
of Madurai should be more helpful nice to all visitors to the city and voluntarily
act as guides by providing correct information about places, the city's culture
and heritage. By keeping the city clean, removing all encroachments near tourist
spots, we can make Madurai more tourist friendly.

VOICE YOUR VIEWS: INVESTMENT OPTIONS

Innumerable options

In the liberalized economy, an investor has innumerable options before him.

But it is a known fact that gullible investors yearning for rich returns for their
investment are often hoodwinked by the greedy private finance companies. Hence
investment of hard-earned money needs safe hands with moderate income. The Postal
Savings Bank (POSB) of Postal Department, bank operations and savings mobilisation
of the Central Government suits all, irrespective of their place of stay, urban or
rural. The Central Government should take steps to improve infrastructure of
postal banks to ensure better service to customers.
