Resident of the Month - Millie B.

Millie Belton was born on August 31, 1937 in Cleveland, OH. In May of 1987 she said she came to Minnesota for her daughters graduation and never went back [to Ohio]. She was married twice: first to an Englishman named Harold in Cleveland (and she even lived in England with him for 12 years!), and most recently to Steve here in St. Cloud. Harold and Millie had 3 kids together: David, who is now in England; Colin, who is now in Japan; vorite thing to bake was apple pie. The crust was so tender, it melts in your mouth. I never used a recipe. Millie moved into Carefree in January of 2012, and we are so grateful! She was voted as our Queen of Valentines this past February. When shes not showing off her card shark status in cribbage or 500 downstairs, she can be found painting a masterpiece (3 represented here) in her room or exercising in our fitness group.

and Judy, who lives in the area. Judys family is very musical and occasionally grace Millie and other residents with their talents. Millie has 4 grandkids, oldest of which is 14 years old now. When raising her family, she learned how to make

bread from her neighbor who ground her own flour. She would bring over the freshly-ground flour every week and Millie, in between other housekeeping activities, would make 12 loaves of bread a week! She said that she was a good homemaker. The clothes were always washed & ironed, and everything was made by scratch. Her fa-

Congratulations, Millie, for being our Resident of the Month for May!

May 2012 Carefree Living started a Resident of the Month program. This program is in place to recognize our residents who put smiles on the faces of others and who help make Carefree Living a little brighter each day.

It was the evening of May 1, 1893, and a crowd of 200,000 people had gathered in Grant Park in Chicago to witness the opening of the Worlds Columbian Exposition. (It was supposed to have opened a year earlier to honor the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, but the construction of the fabulous buildings which housed exhibits from all over the world had taken longer than expected.) An enormous platform seating 33,000 dignitaries and distinguished visitors had been erected in front of the Administration Building, and the President of the United States, Grover Cleveland, would officially open the fair. After an appropriate short speech, the President pushed a button and two things happened. A massed choir burst into the Hallelujah chorus from Handels Messiah, and 5,000 arc lights went on, illuminating every acre of Grant Park and every building in it. It was a sight such as no man alive today ever saw, one reporter wrote, and no one who was there that night ever forgot it. Those magnificent lights were seen from miles away, and for all those 200,000 people who had never seen anything brighter than a kerosene lamp, it was both incredible and ecstatic. The Age of Electricity was born that May night in Chicago, Illinois. As if that was not enough, visitors could return the next day and witness yet another marvel in action. A young guy by the name of George Ferris had invented a giant wheel especially for this Exposition, and it really was something to behold and experience. It was 265 feet highas high, that is, as a 26story building. Between its rims it carried 38 plush seats and room for 22 standees, in a volume of space as big as a bus. The wheel as a whole carried 2,160 passengers when it was filled to capacity, and it was illuminated at night by 2,440 light bulbs. It is no wonder that the Ferris wheel became the signature emblem of the fair. There is a passage in St. Pauls first letter to the Corinthians which comes to mind whenever men make some dramatic advance in their way of life. Paul wrote, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has the mind of man even imagined, what things God has prepared for those who love Him (2:9). Surely those words must have occurred to some of the people who visited the fair; but, perhaps for the first time in history, they may have been disturbing rather than inspiring. What was evident to all was the fact that everyone could enjoy the benefits of electricity and the fun of the Ferris wheel whether they loved God or not. As we continue to make ever more amazing improvements in our way of life, each new advance seems to make virtue and the love of God more irrelevant. If they do become irrelevant, do you think anything equivalent will be found to replace them? Written by Carefree Living Resident Ron R.
