Functions of the modules:
1. CMM interface and clock generation module
This module generates synchronous clock signal required for
communication between TPUE and CMM according to synchronous
signal provided by CMM. It sends uplink data to CMM after organizing
them according to certain timeslots.
Besides, it generates TDMA clock signal required by ETRM, such as
FCLK and OBCLK.
2. Signaling processing and control module
This module processes and converts GSM signaling protocols, including
layer-2 protocol LAPD with BSC, layer-2 protocol HDLC with CMM,
layer-2 protocol LaPSM with Um interface and layer-3 radio resources
management protocol.
It monitors running status of respective TPUE processors and status of
RCUE, and sends alarm signals to CMM.
It generates the frame number in real time.
It implements static power control.
3. Baseband processing module
This module performs the base band processing of the eight channels
on one TDMA frame. It implements rate adaptation, channel coding
and interleaving as well as the generation of TDMA burst pulse, in
downlink direction. It combines the two channels of diversity receiver
signals from receiving module, and implements digital demodulation
(GMSK demodulation and equalization), de-interleaving, channel
decoding and rate adaptation, in uplink direction.
4. Modulation module
This module adds dynamic power information of this timeslot to
generate a baseband digital I/Q signal, and sends the signal to RCUE

Chapter 3 - Module

for processing according to TDMA burst pulse generated by baseband
processing module.
5. Frequency hopping module
When ETRM is configured for frequency hopping, this module sets
initial frequency points for each PLL, modifies frequency points, and
generates frequency hopping sequence. It sends them to frequency
hopping module via the baseband processing module. The frequency
hopping module extracts the frequency control information in downlink
burst pulse of the baseband processing module and generates the
signal required to control sending/receiving PLL during RF hopping, to
implement frequency hopping function.
6. Receiver module
This module receives from RCUE the two paths of high-speed parallel
signals sampled alternatively by the two receivers. After being
processed, these signals form baseband I/Q signals and are sent to the
baseband processing module in a serial mode.
7. Alarm module
Major function of this module is to collect alarm information of RCUE
unit. This alarm information is sent to CMM for processing via signaling
processing and control module.
RCUE
RCUE is realized by four types of radio carrier board: DRCGE, DRCCE,
DRCDE, and DRCPE. They support GSM/EGSM 900, GSM 850, GSM 1800,
and GSM 1900 system respectively.
The radio carrier board consists of PLL, TX, RX and control circuit. It
performs the following functions:
1. Transmits RF signal, including GMSK baseband signal generation,
frequency conversion, power amplification and power control.
2. Receives RF signal, including frequency conversion, filtering,
intermediate amplification, A/D conversion and restoring back to I/Q
signals.
3. Status detection for each radio carrier board, including PA output end
forward/reverse power detection, temperature detection and locking
indication of frequency synthesizer.
PAUE
PAUE is realized by four types of power amplifier board: DPAGE, DPACE,
DPADE, and DPAPE. They support GSM/EGSM 900, GSM 850, GSM 1800,
and GSM 1900 system respectively.
It amplifies the power of GMSK/8PSK modulated RF signal injected by TX
to required power level, and provides system monitoring with forward
power detection, reverse power detection and temperature detection
signals.

Functions:
1. Providing bi-directional channel from BTS to the antenna for signals of
transmitting frequency band and from the antenna to BTS for signals
of receiving frequency band.
2. Generating alarms when SWR of the antenna port deteriorates.
3. Suppressing interference and spurious emission beyond working
frequency band.
4. Implementing flexible carrier configuration.
5. Implementing diversity receiving.
AEM Classification
ZXG10 BS21 supports AEM such as Combiner Distribution Unit (CDU),
Combiner Extension Unit (CEU), and E Combiner Distribution Unit (ECDU).
The following takes ECDU for example to describe AEM working principle
and functions, panel, external interfaces, and indices.
ECDU
Working Principle and Functions
ECDU consists of a transceiving duplexer, VSWR detecting circuit, two
LNAs (each LNA includes a 1-to-2 splitter) and a receiving filter. It can
meet diversity receiving requirements, as shown in Figure 27.

Functions of the duplexer:
1. Providing bi-directional channel from BTS to antenna for signals of the
transmitting frequency band and from antenna to BTS for signals of
the receiving frequency band.
2. Reporting alarms when SWR of the antenna port deteriorates.
3. Suppressing interference and spurious emission beyond the working
frequency band.
The receiver filter is a bandpass filter, providing great suppression of the
interference beyond the receiving band, especially interference of the
transmitting band.
ECDU Panel
According to working frequency band, ECDU have several types of panels:
ECDUG, ECDUD, ECDUC, and ECDUP. They are same except for name.

Board
DAEM is power interface board, which supplies power to LNA, VSWR and
TMAs in AEM. It sends various alarm signals to TPUE, including power
alarm, LNA over-current alarm, TMA over-current alarm and SWR alarms
(of two levels).
Analog 12 V power required by DAEM comes from the backplane MMTRM
of ETRM shelf. DAEM supplies +12 V power to LNA and a 12 V power to
VSWR. Analog +12 V power required by TMAs is sent to the bottom rack
via MMTRM, and then to TMAs.
DAEM adopts analog 12 V power and have two 500 mA/250 VAC and 250
mA/250 VAC fuses. 500 mA/250 VAC fuse provides over-current
protection for analog +12 V power while 250 mA/250 VAC fuse provides
over-current protection for analog 12 V power.
Since there are many types of DAEM, the DIP switch S1 is used for TPUE
to identify DAEM types. When S1 is set to ON, it indicates 1; otherwise, it
indicates 0.
Table 21 describes meanings of the DIP switch S1 setting.

Power Module
ZXG10 BS21 (V2.2) supports two types of power module:
AC power module PSM
DC power module DPS
PSM
Functions and Structure
Figure 31 shows the working principle of PSM.
FI GURE 31 WORK I NG PRI NCI PL E OF PSM

Power supply unit implements lightning protection and filtering for single-
phase 3-line 220 VAC power. 220 VAC enters PSM module after anti-
lightning and filtering processing. PSM provides one line of AC to heat
exchanger and converts the other line of AC into 48 VDC for output. PSM
provides AC input protection (over-voltage/under-voltage protection) and
DC output protection (over-voltage/under-voltage protection),

Chapter 3 - Module

lightening/surge prevention, burst interference resistance, cycle drop
prevention, conduction interference resistance and anti-electromagnetic
radiation functions.
It provides intelligent control of device startup. PSM can control the power
supply of other modules through temperature monitoring when the
temperature in the cabinet is too low and other modules fail to start
directly as the cabinet has not been working for a long time. When the
temperature is lower than 0 C, it will stop the 48 V power supply to
other modules, start the heater to heat the cabinet and will start providing
power supply to other modules when the temperature is higher than 0 C.
When it detects that the internal temperature of the cabinet is higher than
70 C, it will automatically stop the power supply to protect the modules.
PSM also provides standby power supply using external UPS. UPS provides
two lines of AC (UPA master and UPS slave) to PSM. Slave line powers
PSM. Meanwhile, PSM detects the power supply of master line and
conducts secondary power-off control. UPS has sufficient power and PSM
detects power in UPS master channel, after turning off the mains. PSM
converts the 220 VAC provided by UPS slave line into 48 VDC to supply
power to all DC loads. PSM detects that UPS master line is powered off
when UPS does not have sufficient power. It stops the power supply to
most DC loads and provides power only to transmission module and the
fan of heat exchanger to maintain basic functions and cycling in the
cabinet.
PSM stops supplying power to the heat exchanger when the system is
running on UPS, to keep the system running for a longer duration.

Working Principle and Structure
of Antenna Feeder System
Antenna feeder transmits signals from the duplexer reaching the antenna
through 1/2 feeder, lightning arrester and 7/8 main feeder, and are
radiated to the area to be covered through the antenna, in downlink
direction. Antenna receives uplink signals from MS, and sends them to the
receiving tributary of the duplexer via the feeder, in uplink direction.

Directional antenna requires that its radiant surface radiate the area to be
covered. Please refer to ZXG10 BS21 (V2.2) Compact Outdoor BTS for
GSM Installation Manual for antenna installation.
Precautions
Antennas must meet certain isolation requirement to avoid inter-cell signal
interference or inter-band signal interference in same cell. Generally,
required isolation degree must be larger than 30 dB. Antennas must meet
requirement for diversity distance and eliminate obstacles if possible. .

Feeder
Functions
Feeder provides channels for radio signal transmission.
GSM base station system generally adopts 1/2" super flexible and 7/8" RF
coaxial cables as the media for signal transmission.
GSM base station system uses 1/2" super flexible jumpers when
transitional connection is necessary to facilitate system connection.
GSM base station uses 7/8" main feeder for long distance transmission.
The feeders low transmission attenuation and good VSWR indices are
critically important for maximum signal transmission efficiency.
Figure 40 shows appearance of the feeder.

Tower Mounted Amplifier
Functions
Tower Mounted Amplifier (TMA) is a power amplifying system to amplify
uplink signals and improve uplink/downlink balance. It plays an important
role in improving the quality of network coverage.
Figure 41 shows appearance of TMA.
FI GURE 41 TMA

TMA of GSM base station system consists of three parts:
A tower mounted low noise amplifier (TMA), including a transceiving
duplex filter and a receiving low noise amplifier
A power distribution unit (PDU), providing DC power and reporting alarms
for TMA
A Bias Tee, providing DC power and lightning protection to TMA via the
feeders, and transmitting RF signals

Lightning Arrester
Functions
The high-frequency signal lightning arrester (usually called an antenna
feeder lightning arrester) is used for lightning protection on antenna
feeder and various radio communication devices.
GSM base station generally uses a 1/4 wavelength short-circuiting
lightning arrester. Figure 42 shows appearance of lightening arrester.
FI GURE 42 L I GHTNI NG ARRESTER

1/4 wavelength short-circuiting lightning arrester is compliant with 1/4
short-circuiting principle. Its inside is shaped as a coaxial cavity: a short
conducting cable connects the coaxial transmission cable in parallel, with
one end connecting wire core and the other connecting the ground. Its
length is 1/4 of the wavelength based on accurate calculation. Length of a
1/4 short circuit wire is 83.3 mm for 900 MHz products and the length is
41.7 mm for 1800 MHz products. Theoretically, when the length of the
wire is an odd multiple of 1/4 , the wave impedance at the short
circuiting point is infinite and the circuit is equivalent to a parallel
resonating circuit. In this case, the working power attenuation of a signal
transmitted from the short circuit grounding point to the equipment is zero
(P= Ucos/Z: is 90, Z is the impedance). To the lightning current, it
means that a 1/4 long metal conductor is directly short-circuited to the
ground to implement lightning protection. Figure 43 shows working
principle and structure of the lightning arrester.
