The one thing all of my sources have in common is the role of the women in
Harry potters life, but mainly the impact they had on Harry Potters love life. The main
focus for my Synthesis paper is whether not Harry would have been better off with
Hermione Granger instead of Ginny Weasley. This argument stems from a recent
interview in which J.K. Rowling acknowledges that Harry should have ended up with
Hermione instead of Ginny. As you can imagine this information caused quite a stir,
some positive others negative. Needless to say the information below will shed some
light on the authors view as well as the critics. We will also pull the information from
the books themselves to better understand if Hermione really even had a romantic shot at
becoming the future Mrs. Potter.
Chayka, Kyle. "J.K. Rowling: Ron and Hermione Just Need 'A Bit of Counseling' ". Time.com,
(2014): 1.
This particular source summarizes the writers perspective that Ron and Hermione
just need a bit of counseling. That even though the masses would have preferred Harry
with Hermione in the end Harry married Ginny and Hermione settled for Ron. That the
only thing they need was a bit of counseling. The author works for Time and has
written a lot of articles for on multiple topics ranging from beer to fantasy novels. This
particular source convinced me, that Ron and Hermione, regardless of what J.K.
originally said in her interview with the Sunday Times, are just fine together. Kyle
Britton Mickelson 2

argues that all Ron and Hermione just need is a little bit counseling. It makes me think
that he author got it right the first time by pairing Hermione with Ron instead of Harry.
The best piece of evidence the author provides is the fact that within the novels
she has written, Harry eventually will find his way to his one true love, Ginny, and that
Ron and Hermione will be alright with a bit of counseling Suggesting that with some
kind of wizard counseling program Ron and Hermiones relationship would be fine in
time. Kyle unlike J.K. pointed at a different solution, given the characters tendencies to
cast violent spells that maybe wizarding counseling would be unwise and if Ron and
Hermione are destined to fail; Kyle suggests divorce would be better. Cconsidering Ron
and Hermiones marriage is sealed in the magical world of Harry Potter, there may be a
chance that divorce is similar to the unbreakable vow, which means one of them
would have to die, making divorce a game of Russian roulette.
This source affected my thinking because it helps me to think beyond the
relationships themselves and to think about the magical reproduction that may follow
considering the mystical and magical bond that may present itself in the wizarding world
of Harry Potter. This relates to my other sources because it encompasses my main theme
of my synthesis paper which is whether Harry would have been better with off with
Hermione then Ginny.
Croft, Claudia. News. JK admits Harry should have wed Hermione. Sunday times., n.d. Web. 2
Feb. 2014.
It was the romance that everyone wanted pairing Hermione with Harry and Ron
with whomever. You know the book and movies should have ended differently when the
Britton Mickelson 3

individual who wrote the novel comes out and states publicly that the Hermione should
have married Harry instead of Ron. It hard to imagine an author with the kind of success
J.K. Rowling has had, would openly admit that she got it wrong. But what if she didnt?
Within this particular source are the actual words of the Author herself admitting that
she should have paired Harry with Hermione instead of Ginny.
The Author of the article has my vote with credibility because she interviewed
J.K. Rowland and heard it straight from the horses mouth (the author). Hermione should
have ended up with Harry instead of Ron. Even the actress who played Hermione agreed
in the interview that Harry would have been better for Hermione instead of Ron. The
interviewer, the Author, and Emma Watson affect my writing because it shows that the
people who wrote the novels and played the character, agree that Hermione would have
been better off with Harry and not Ron. The beginning I was anticipating that Hermione
would ultimately ended up with Harry and Ginny would be happy with someone else.
This relates to my topic because of the individuals being interviewed. That fact
that the Author paired Harry with Ginny then back tracks years after writing the final
novel and therefore seals Ginny and Harry for time and all eternity is fascinating. You
dont see many authors back track on what has already been written and published. Also
this is the frame work for entire synthesis paper and therefore all of the other sources are
related to this source in one way or another.
Knepper, Marty. "Females And Harry Potter: Not All That Empowering." Journal Of Popular
Culture 40.6 (2007): 1083-1084. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 30
Apr. 2014.
This is my peer reviewed source. This particular article is criticizing J.K
Britton Mickelson 4

Rowlings view on women within her novels. Marty suggest that the J.K. Rowlings
message to young women is that girls should stand up for themselves but only to a
point and certainly not at the expense of boys which suggest that J.K. May not have
developed strong female characters within her novels.
To further illustrate Martys view she looks and various females characters within
the novels. She uses Hermione as the prime example. Though smart and intellectually
gifted Hermione has a hard time standing up for herself. She does however develop
somewhat of backbone throughout the novels but is perfectly content taking a seat back
while the boys do what boys do have adventures.
This article relates to my topic because you have to look at how J.K. Rowling
developed Hermione. Better yet if Hermione was meant to be with Harry why did J.K.
Rowling allow Hermione to pursue Ron instead opting for Harry? That Question may
never be answered but at least this source will help shed some light on Ginny and
Hermiones personalities and how they would develop within the novels. Considering
this information you cant help but think it was really Harry who picks Ginny.
Rowling, J. K.. Harry Potter Book Series 1-7. New York: Scholastic Press, 1998. Print.
It obvious that Im going to need to pull my information from the Harry potter
novels themselves in order to properly determine if Harry would have been better off
with Hermione then Ginny. The book themselves contain everything there is known
about Harry Potter world, but also provides key insights on his love life. The credibility
is in the story and how the novels portray everything on Harry relationships and how he
interacted with girls. You cant help but wonder who Harry is going to end up with when
you start reading the novels.
Britton Mickelson 5

This source contains key events that eventually led Harry to Ginnys arms rather than
Hermione. But personally after reading the novels myself I really believe the J.K.
Rowling is pushing Hermione into Harry arms rather than Rons. But you cannot change
the destiny that has been laid out within the novels themselves and how J.K. Rowling
wrote the novels. The ultimate amount of evidence will come from the novels
themselves therefore relates to all of the other sources.
Wardle, Suzanne "Why do people hate that Harry Potter ended up with Ginny Weasley?."
Roanoke times. n.d. Web. 30 Mar. 2014.
The credibility comes from critics and self-proclaimed experts (but realistically
enthusiasts) who suggested from the beginning that the Harry should up with Hermione
and that Ginny was not a good or even remotely compatible match with Harry.
This source shows that prior to J.K.Rowlings admission that there were individuals
lobbying to have Harry end up with Hermione prior to the novels ending. But it also
suggest that prior, and even after the novels ended that critics and enthusiasts suggest
that Ginny would have been better off with someone else.
This article suggests that there is always one rule when you have a best friend
That you shouldnt touch your best friends mate illustrating that Ron sister Ginny
shouldnt have even pursued a romantic relationship with Harry and Harry shouldnt
have entertained thought of courting Ginny. Suzanne was really happy when J.K.
Admitted that Hermione should have been sealed to Harry and that the whole Ginny
relationship developed out of thin air, and besides, you do not date you best friends
sister. Its the classic clich or unspoken rule that you do not date your best friends
sister.
Britton Mickelson 6

This source relates to my other sources because it show the Wesley though
exclusively Rons perspective that Harry should of ended up with anyone else besides
Ginny. The author even suggests that Luna would be a good match for Harry and
therefore opening my mind to real possibility of Hermione ending up with Harry. But it
also made think beyond Rons perceived view; it made me construct a view for Molly
(Rons Mother) after all I would have a hard time believing that Molly would allow
Ginny the only Weasley daughter to marry any young suitor and its not every day that
the most famous wizard comes through the door either. Not hard to image the clich of a
mother pushing her daughter to entertain and seduce the youngest most popular eligible
bachelor around.
In closing I think it is good to see how the sources relates which is if Hermione
had a real shot at dating and eventually marring Harry Potter. But how they differ in
their views of the role women within the Harry potter novels, how Ginny unlike
Hermione did pursue Harry romantically, and finally how the novels themselves show
that ultimately, regardless of how any feels Ginny would be the ultimate victor by
stealing Harry heart. These sources are a crucial resource into understanding the
different views and perspectives and ultimately helped me construct viable argument
when constructing my synthesis paper.
