Content Area Lesson Plan #2

Introduction:
This lesson is about Properties of Logarithms. The Common Core State
standard that this lesson meets is CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.5. This standard
states that the student will be able to understand the inverse relationship between
exponents and logarithms and use this relationship to solve problems involving
logarithms and exponents. The whole section should take about 30 minutes
minimum to complete. To differentiate instruction I will use a few different
strategies. First I will be using the overhead with most of the lesson already visible. I
will just be writing in examples and showing them the steps on how to work them.
Next, I will allow time for the students to discuss the lesson amongst themselves in
groups of four. My third strategy is to have the students take efficient notes so that
they can refer back to them during homework time. I also will make myself available
during their homework time so that I can help them with any problems they may be
having.
Learning Objectives:
The student will be able to list the different properties of logarithms and give
a definition of each.
The student will be able to solve a logarithmic problem with the product
property.
The student will be able to solve a logarithmic problem with quotient
property.
The student will be able to solve a logarithmic problem with power
property.
The student will know what property to use when solving a logarithmic
problem.
Introduction/ Anticipatory:
This lesson will be something completely new to the class. I will start out by
asking the class about what they know about logarithms. They should know at least
what they are. After this I will introduce the concept of Properties of Logarithms by
explaining to them that they are short cuts to help us solve log equations or ways to
rewrite the information. I will tell them that for all properties m, n, and b are all
positive numbers. I will then begin with product property to start off my lesson.

Lesson Development:
Product Property:
n m mn
b b b
log log log

Example 1: Use
5850 . 1 3 log
2

to find
48 log

Quotient Property:
n m
n
m
b b b
log log log

Example 2: Use
4650 . 1 5 log
3

and
7268 . 2 20 log
3

to find
4 log
3

Power Property:
m p m
b
p
b
log log

Example 3: Use
2925 . 1 6 log
4

to find
36 log
4

Conclusion:
At this time I will go back through each property and remind them of the
definitions/ formulas for each one. I will stop at each and answer any questions they
may have or do an additional example when needed.

Assessment:
For assessment I will grade the homework that they are assigned by their
teacher. This will show me what students understand this and what students do not.
This will also show me where the class as a whole might be struggling or where they
are thriving.
