Project Title
DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF SHELL AND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER BY USING CFD
TOOL
Objective
The specific objectives are as follows? To study the available information regarding the
shell and tubular heat exchanger.? To study the available information regarding the
various types of baffles and baffle spacing used in shell and tubular heat exchanger?
Identify the possible ways to increase the heat transfer efficiency and reduce the pressure
drop.? To model the shell and tubular heat exchanger with the concept of design.? To
perform CFD analysis on the shell and tubular heat exchanger.
Abstarct
ABSTRACTHeat exchangers are equipment that transfers heat from one medium to
another. The proper design, operation and maintenance of heat exchangers will make the
process energy efficient and minimize energy losses. Among different types of heat
exchangers, shell and tube heat exchangers have been commonly used in industries. The
baffles are primarily used in shell and tube heat exchangers for inducing cross flow over
the tubes, and as a result, improving heat transfer performance. The traditional shell and
tube heat exchanger with segmental baffles have many disadvantages, such as high
pressure drop, low heat transfer efficiency, harmful vibration caused by the shell-side flow
which is normal to tube bundles. Therefore, a shell and tubular heat exchanger with
different baffle spacing might achieve higher heat transfer efficiency and lower pressure
drop. In this project various method of improving the heat transfer performance has been
carried out. The mathematical calculation is done by Kern method by increasing the baffle
spacing and the heat transfer performance is increased. The CFD analysis has been
carried out between two model of shell and tube heat exchanger one with segmental
baffles and another with flower baffles. The heat transfer performance of shell and tube
heat exchanger is increased when segmental baffle is replaced with flower
baffles.KEYWORDS: Shell and tube heat exchanger, Baffles
