Qeyamuddin Mubashir's Assignment in Educational Enquiry 2013

Research proposal worksheet

1) Introduction/ rationale
The topic of my research is the preferred teaching approaches by students at Kunduz University
English Department and Kabul University English Department. There are many differences
between Kabul university English department and Kunduz University English Department in
many aspects. For example, in Kabul University there are many facilities, good libraries, having
very qualified teachers, mohes more attention, being in the capital and many more while in
Kunduz University there is lack of good libraries, textbooks, the teachers are not so much
qualified and also its far from the mohes attention. These are the factors which directly affect
to the ways teachers teach and the approaches students prefer in these two departments.
Therefore I decided to study: which are the preferred teaching approaches of students at the
English department at Kunduz University and at Kabul University and why?
2) Method
Research Design:
I will use mixed method (questionnaire and interview) in my research.
Participants:
In my research I will select 30 students from English department of Kunduz University and 30
students from English department at Kabul University. I will systematically select my subjects
from both males and females.
Data sources and instruments:
Generally, in this paper I will use questionnaires and focus group discussion. I will use closed
item questionnaires and focus group discussion to collect my data. It should be mentioned that
I will collect general preference of students to teaching approaches using questionnaires. Then,
the questions which were not answered in the questionnaires, or to get more details about
some important questions which were answered in the questionnaires I will do the focus group
discussion with the students of both Kunduz and Kabul English Department.
Procedure:
To collect my data first, I will hand out the questionnaires to the 60 students of both
departments. Then, out of 60 students I will select 5 students from each department to focus
group discussion. I will have one meeting with all the students of each department and three
meetings with some of them. Next, I will give them the questionnaires to take home and fill

them out and return them. Later, I will randomly select 10 people from the students of each
department and will have one focus group discussion with them about their preferred teaching
approach. In both ways of elicitation I will ask the same questions about their preferred
teaching approach.
Analysis:
Since I use a mixed method (qualitative and quantitative approach) I will get the data from the
questionnaires and focus group discussion from the students of each department, Kunduz and
Kabul English department. I do the questionnaire to get general information about the students
preferred teaching approaches in both departments and the focus group discussion for detailed
information about some important questions. Then, I will calculate the students preferred
communicative and the students preferred traditional and then see which method from which
department have the highest number of preferences and why.
3) Discussion
By the end of this survey, if the number of students preferring tradition method was higher
than the number students in Kabul English Department, then we should see how the outcome
of their teachings in the classes is. Or if the number of students preferring traditional method
was higher than communicative approach higher in Kabul English department then we should
see how the outcome of their teaching is in the Kabul English Department.
4) Conclusion:
Based on my experience and understanding from both universities I think that there will be a
difference between students preferences about teaching approaches in both universities. I
think the students at Kunduz University will prefer traditional approach and English student at
Kabul University will prefer modern approach. If there was a big difference I hope mohe to
hold methodology workshops for teachers at the English Department at Kunduz University.
Because I am giving the questionnaires for students to take home I am not sure whether they
are answering the questionnaires properly or not, or do they understand the questionnaires
properly to answer. Therefore, this research will have an instrumentation problem.
