Melomi Waller

3/25/14
Music 3160
Music Observation #1

Date: 2/18/14 (12:30-1:00pm)
Grade: Kindergarten
Teacher: Mrs. Roxanne Rollefson
School: Potosi Elementary; Potosi, WI
Perceived Goal for the lesson: Voice pitches (high, low and in between)
Mrs. Rollefson spent a few minutes talking about the Valentine concert they had the previous
night.
She started off by reading Silver Moon Boat; had students trace the waves with their finger.
Explained the high and low pitches and how it matched the waves. She would sing the
song, and eventually they joined in by just adjusting their voices (sound and speed) to the
waves.
Students then created their own song; a voice map. They could make their song as smooth or
as jagged as much they wanted it to be.

Students Reaction:
Concert: The students had fun and enjoyed themselves. Their favorite song they sang was
Skinnamarink!
Lesson: The students loved being involved with the story, as well as creating their own song!
At first they werent as excited, but as they started to write their song they started to enjoy it
more and at the end they all loved it. There were quite a few students who wanted to create
several songs. Some of the students liked to share their work with others, while there was a
few who liked to keep it to themselves.

My Reaction:
Concert: I was surprised when they sang Skinnamarink! We had just learned that song, and
here it was used in an actual classroom! I wish I had seen their concert.
Lesson: I think that the story was a great anticipatory set. It got students involved and gave a
preview of what they would be learning for the class period. I also think that having the
students involved in the story helped the students stay on task.

Teaching Tips:
REPEAT Instructions remind them (give reminders) especially if its something new
that they are learning

Description of Classroom Surroundings:

(Due to only being in one classroom, I thought I would make a sketch of the classroom.)
Her classroom was filled with colorful posters. There were posters that included definitions to
words, diversity of culture, music notes and names, as well as various instruments.
She had all different kinds of instruments in her room.
A very music orientated class room.
Kindergarten* Mrs. Rollefson had placed a rug for them to sit on when they came to class.
After they had left, she removed the rug and started to prepare for the next class.
First Grade* each dash represents a first grader. There was either a xylophone or a
glockenspiel for each student to work/play with.

*Kindergarten; this rug was used when the kindergarten students came in. They either sat on
the line or space on the rug. I thought this was really cute and appropriate.

This is a rough sketch of one of Mrs. Rollefsons bulletin boards. The houses were following
along a curvy road. It was colorful and had much more detail, especially the houses. This was
also another cute idea and very effective for students.
