Acids, Bases and Salts
Unit Overview
An acid is any substance that produces hydrogen ions in water. Hydrogen ions cause the properties of acids. A base is any substance
that produces hydroxide ions in water. Hydroxide ions are responsible for the bitter taste and slippery feel of bases. Chemists use a
numeric scale called pH ranging from 0 to 14 to describe the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. A reaction between an acid
and a base is called a neutralization and it produces a salt and water.
