UNIT 1 FINITE ELEMENT FORMULATION OF BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS
1. A simply supported beam is subjected to UDL over entire span. Determine
the bending moment and defection at mid span by using Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare with exact solutions. (Take two/three term polynomial or trigonometric function). 2. A beam of AB of span l simply supported at ends and carrying a point load W at the centre C as shown in fig. Determine the deflection at mid span by using Rayleigh-Ritz method and compare with exact result. (Take two/three term polynomial or trigonometric function).
3. A simply supported beam is subjected to UDL over entire span and it is subjected to a point load at centre of the span. A bar of uniform cross section is clamped at left end at other end free and is subjected to a uniform axial load P as shown in fig. 5. Find the deflection at the centre of a clamped beam subjected to uniformly distributed load throughout its length as shown in fig. Use point collocation method. Take trail function as y=a(x 5 -2lx 4 +l 2 +x 3 ).
6. A cantilever beam is shown in fig. It is subjected to an UDL W, point load W and moment M 0 at the free end as shown.

UNIT 4 DYNAMIC ANALYSIS USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD 1. Find the natural frequency of longitudinal vibration of the unconstrained stepped bar as shown in Fig.
2. For the bar shown in fig. with length 2L, modulus if elasticity E, mass density , and cross sectional area A, determine the first two natural frequencies.
3. Consider a uniform cross-section bar an shown in fig. of length L made up of amaterial whose youngs modulus and density are given by E and . Estimate the naturalfrequencies of axial vibration of the bar using both lumped and consistent mass matrix.
4. Determine the natural frequency of vibration for a beam fixed at both ends as shown infig. The beam has mass density , modulus of elasticity E, cross-sectional area A, moment ofinertia I, and length 2L. For simplicity of the long hand calculations, the beam is discretizedinto two elements of length L.
