Rev A 1/10 Page 3
1. General Information
1.01 This module practice describes the features and circuitry of the 71150H
UFAB. Refer to Figure 1, page 1.
1.02 The UFAB is a single-slot module used in applications with the High
Capacity Switch Shelf (HCSS). The UFAB provides the following general functions:
high speed backplane interface supporting fourteen 20 Gbps module
slots
SONET and SDH switching between modules
unicast and multicast address management
1.03 The HCSS requires three UFABs. 2:1 UFABs provide protected switching
for the 280 Gbps of traffic supported on the HCSS. The UFABs provide load
sharing across switch devices and port modules.
1.04 The UFABs contain packet-based switch devices. The three UFABs
provide the center stage switch for the SONET and SDH traffic that is emulated by
the port modules. UFAB equipment redundancy and the protection of the switch
function is enabled at the hardware level.
1.05 Each element in the switch fabric is a shared memory switch with a single
priority queue per interface on the switch device. The traffic scheduler for each port
is located on the port module at the egress side of the system. The arrival of a
packet to an empty virtual output queue results in the transmission of a flow control
message to the associated egress scheduler. The packet is segmented and
transmitted as a series of constituent cells.
1.06 Because multiple serial links connect an ingress queue to an egress port,
the constituent cells can be distributed over a number of links in a load sharing
arrangement. The links available for load sharing are determined through
reachability messages. The UFAB can distribute the cells of a packet over any
number of switching planes.
1.07 In the HCSS architecture, the first and third switch stages are provided by
the switch interface devices of the port module, while the center stage is provided
by the switch devices on the UFAB. All switch interface devices connect to each
switching plane in order to ensure non-blocking behavior. Each physical switching
device can be configured with one or more logical switching planes.
Reason for Issue 1.08 Tellabs issues this module practice at Revision A to describe functionality
for Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System FP6.0.x.

3.04 2:1 UFABs provide protected switching for the 280 Gbps of traffic
supported on the HCSS. The protection module constantly operating in working
mode, and the system determines load sharing among all three UFABs.
3.05 The UFABs support up to 14 port modules in slots 28 and slots 1218.
3.06 The UFABs require at least one controller module in slots 1 and 19.
Removal and Insertion
3.07 Visually inspect the 71150H UFAB upon arrival for possible damage
incurred during shipment. If there is any damage, file a claim with the carrier
immediately. If you have stored the module, visually inspect it again before
installation.
Warning:
Always wear a static protection wriststrap while performing any procedures that
require you to come in contact with the system. This includes touching modules,
cabling, or the system in any way. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage
system components resulting in a traffic affecting condition. Ensure that modules
are stored in static preventive material.
Warning:
If the module connector pins are bent or broken, the module may not function as
intended. The system operation will be affected. If, during installation, you
encounter resistance before the front panel meets the shelf, do not force the
module into place. Check the slot module guides, connectors, and clips to locate
and remove any potential obstruction before proceeding.
Warning:
Failure to maintain proper module alignment during removal or insertion can
cause circuit board component damage. Ensure that the module and circuit
board components do not contact adjacent modules during installation or
removal.

4.03 The UFAB is a single-slot module used in applications with the High
Capacity Switch Shelf (HCSS). The UFAB provides the following general functions:
high speed backplane interface supporting fourteen 20 Gbps module
slots
SONET and SDH switching between modules
unicast and multicast address management
4.04 The HCSS requires three UFABs. 2:1 UFABs provide protected switching
for the 280 Gbps of traffic supported on the HCSS.
Microprocessor
4.05 The microprocessor provides module control and communications,
application flash, and application memory.
Backplane Interface
4.06 The UFAB interfaces to the high speed backplane via 16 high speed
interface connectors. Eight connectors are used to interface with universal slots
2-8 and 12-18. Another eight are reserved for future use.
Power
4.07 The power supply convert the -48V power feed to the different voltages
needed on the UFAB. The power supply also monitors voltages on every supply
feed generated by the power converters. The power supply reports alarms in case
of failure, and is protected against power reversal.
Switch Device
4.08 The switch device consists of four self-routing switching elements. The
fabric switches destination-routed and source-routed data cells and control cells.
Once switched, both data and control cells are multiplexed over the output serial
links.
4.09 The switch fabric supports unicast and multicast signals. The switch fabric
also features internal input-to-output CRC checking, dynamic topology detection,
and automatic fault detection and recovery using dynamic distribution and routing
tables.
