In other classes I have had workshops before and they have gone really well.
Feedback from my peers is
usually good but even if it isn't somehow it still helps me look at my paper in a different light. It makes me see it from their point of view instead of my own and then I can find ways to revise it. If you have a good group for workshops it makes a big difference. I have had classes where my peers where not interested or didn't even bring their work and that obviously is not benefitial. The only concerns I have about the peer workshopping is that the people in my group may not give the effort for editing my paper that I deserve. Hopefully that wouldn't happen since I am sure it is a grade. I have had people in other classes give me a paper back blank saying it was good and didn't need any revisions. Well that is not true because you can always change something about writing.
As for editing and revision they are both important in my understanding. Editing is more of writing notes out to the side of your work, and noting gramatical and spelling problems. Editing can be done by your peers, teachers and yourself. However revision has to be done by yourself. It is when you take all the editing notes you have gathered and revise/rewrite parts of your paper. I think both of these are important because to me you cannot have revision without first editing your first draft. You would edit throughout writing your paper and you do a final revision before you turn in your paper.
I thought it was a good idea when Straubs talks about "commentary on student writing...turn the writer back into his writing and lead him to reflect on his choices and aims." (Staub page 145) He is saying you should be considerate of the peer's writing when you make comments and try to get him/her to reflect on their writing. This will make peers have an easier time revising instead of just listing grammatical corrections they need to make. Straubs also states that "always be ready to praise. But always look to point to places that are not working well or that are not yet working as well as they might". (Straub page 140) He is saying you should prase and criticize.
Reflection: Reading the paper from Staubs in this assignment has helped me think about editing. This assignment helped me come up with ideas of how to evaluate other peoples papers. He says you want to get the person to reflect on their work. This reading assignment helped me think about editing a peers paper a different way than just grammatically. Before I thought editing a paper would be mostly grammatical. I liked that you asked our opinion on group work shopping. Overall this helped me be a better group member and edit their paper more for ideas and structure according to the assignment guidelines and less grammatical focus.
