I welcome you to be a student of Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad. I myself feel
privileged to be the Vice!hancellor of AIOU which has proven itself, a prime institution
imparting education to the masses at their doorsteps and, from grassroot to "h.# level. It is a
matter of pride for Allama Iqbal Open University and the country itself that the name of AIOU
has been included in the list of $ega universities.
After its establishment in %&'( under an Act of "arliament as the 2nd Open University of the
world, the AIOU had to come across a lot of challenges in implementation of its open system of education which was almost
alien to the vast populace of the country. "roviding quality education to the masses at their doorsteps through nonformal
system of education in )eeping with the charter of the university was a herculean tas) indeed. *eginning with + courses and
&', students, the AIOU is now the largest University in the country with %2--. courses and about %.2 millions students.
/ith the developments in 0cience and Information 1echnology, new vistas of )nowledge have been opened and as a result,
demand for new programmes has increased manifold especially in the field of 0cience and 1echnology. 1o )eep pace with
changing scenario of the 2global village3, the AIOU has launched programmes of $."hil and "h.# in 4aculty of 5ducation,
4aculty of Arabic 6 Islamic 0tudies, 4aculty of 0ciences and 4aculty of 0ciences 6 7umanities 8details are given in the
ensuing pages9. :atest technologies of Internet and Video !onferencing have been e;tensively employed for interaction
among students, teachers and the administration. It may not be out of place to mention here that Video !onferencing,
mass<group 0$0, =adio and 1elevision programmes of AIOU have proved immensely helpful educational services to the
students. 1hus, the AIOU is the only university in "a)istan, which provides educational facilities to its vast number of students
on 1elevision, =adio, Video !onferencing and Online in addition to printed learning materials.

"resent postgraduate student enrolment is about %,'+,---. ?ou would appreciate that it is more than the student enrolments of
all the Universities combined in the country. Atmosphere of the University is much female friendly. 7ence our female
enrolment is +'@ in general and '-@ in some specific areas. AIOU education is provided through its >' =egional Offices
spread from !hitral to Aarachi and Buetta to Aashmir.
Al7amdulillah, our retention of previous semester
students who continued to the ne;t semester has been
C(@ in 0emester 0pring 2-%> which is given in the
graphic form.
AIOU maintains high quality faculty at campus and in
regions. Appro;imately 2- young faculty members recently
completed their "h.#s at international and national
universities. $any more are hired from open mar)et to
provide top quality education. 1he university follows
guidelines of the 7igher 5ducation !ommission in letter
and spirit to provide accredited education to masses.
1he University has made a remar)able progress during the
recent years. Its infrastructure has been e;panded,
enrolment has been increased and technological services
have been improved. 0pecial progress has been seen in the
development of assets of the University during the recent
years. AIOU provides international quality education at very low cost and many students complete their education while staying at
their Dobs.

1. ALLAMA I2BAL O,EN UNI#ERSITY
Allama Iqbal Open University, a $ega university was
established in %&'( under an Act of "arliament. 1he main
campus of the university is situated in sector 7C,
Islamabad. It was the second open university of the world
and the first of its )ind in Asia and Africa. 1he aim of
establishing AIOU was to provide affordable and
accessible education through distance learning at the door
steps to those people who could not continue their
education Dourney through formal system of education. 1he
University 8AIOU9 operates on semester system and admits
students in Autumn and 0pring semesters. Under graduate
admissions are offered in both the semesters whereas post
graduates are offered once a year. 1he enrolled students are
given course boo)s specially prepared by the university on
self instructional principles. 7owever at post graduate level
reprints of foreign boo)s, allied material with university
prepared study guides help students to polish their s)ills.
At present, the AIOU is offering programs from $atric to
"h# level in diverse disciplines comprises of four faculties.
1he university has established study centres across the
country, where distance education students are provided
necessary guidance by their respective tutors. $oreover,
the university has established full time study centres,
wherein the students of $*A 8I19, $*A 8*an)ing and
4inance9, *0 8!09, *.0c. 85ngineering9, etc. are being
provided instruction, guidance and counselling through
facetoface education. AIOU is offering four year under
graduate degrees.
Apart from curricular and e;tracurricular activities during
the academic year, the AIOU and its regional centres
actively participate in the cocurricular activities by
arranging educational and literary seminars, wor)shops and
conferences, attended not only by the students and faculties
of the university but also by the renowned dignitaries and
scholars. 4or the science students and research scholars, a
science comple; has been built where they use the latest
equipment of international standard for e;periments and
research. 1o meet the present day challenges internet facility
is also available in the studentEs hostel and the !entral
:ibrary where computers have been provided to enable
students to access latest information available through open
source databases.

INTRODUCTION
It was felt that there is a dire need of a high level body li)e
other universities to strengthen and streamline the higher
education and research activities at AIOU, which are the bac)
bone of any university. In addition it is the responsibility of the
#irectorate to provide assistance to the departments interested
in initiating new research programs and proDects. 1he
#irectorate ensures equality and uniformity in $."hil<"h.# or
equivalent programs being offered by various departments of
the university and also process and finaliFe the cases of
$."hil<"h.# 8right from admission up to the recommendations
for award of degree9 effectively and timely.

1he #irectorate of *oard of Advanced 0tudies and =esearch has
the following obDectivesG
8i9 1o consider and propose appropriate areas of $0<$."hil
level research to the departments for promotion of research.
8ii9 1o suggest<change in eligibility standard for candidateHs
admission to the $0<$."hil or "h.# programme in terms of
qualifications and professional e;perience as per prevailing
academic standards.
8iii9 1o conduct regular meeting of the *oard of Advanced 0tudies
and =esearch 8*A0=9 quarterly or at least biannually to
approve research proposals at $0<$."hil< "h.# level.
8iv9 1o approve the panel of names of research Advisers and
e;ternal evaluators and to revise<update the panels from
time to time.
8v9 1o perform such other functions as may be assigned to it by
the #irector *A0=.
FUNCTIONS OF T3E DIRECTORATE
i. #irectorate of *A0= will regulate and facilitate the
process of admission and evaluation of the $."hil<"h.#
programmes.
ii. 5nsure application of relevant University rules in all
departments offering $."hil<"h# or equivalent
programmes.
iii. !omplete theses evaluation process timely.
iv. #eal with hardship cases of the scholars of $."hil and
"h.# and ma)e appropriate recommendations for their
disposal.
v. 1o ma)e arrangements to reframe<amend rules, regulations
and procedures in the light of different directives of 75!
received here from time to time and proposals of AIOU
departments.
vi. 1o devise incentives such as financial grants to motivate
teachers for publication of boo)s and articles in impact
factor and other research Dournals.
vii. Advise the University Authorities on all matters
concerning promotion of research and publication of
selected researches on the recommendation of academic
departments of the University.
viii. "repare guidelines to maintain uniformity and quality in
formatting the research documents i.e. synopsis, thesis<
dissertation, articles of AIOU research Dournals etc.

offering scholarships and supporting research proDects.

1he 4aculty of Arabic 6 Islamic 0tudies started its functions
initially as Institute of Arabic and Islamic 0tudies comprising of
departments of Arabic and Islamic studies. :ater on the Institute
of Arabic and Islamic 0tudies was upgraded to the level of the
full fledge faculty in %&&& as required by AIOU Act %&'(.

on the different issues of the Islamic 0tudies in general and
command over the different areas of specialiFation such as
Buran, 1afseer, 7adith, 4iqh, Islamic thought, 7istory,
!ulture, !iviliFation and $uslim languages particularly
Arabic language.

leadership in guiding and conducting quality research in the
various disciplines of Islamic and Arabic 0tudies.

Islamic studies. 1his programme was started in %&C'. 1his is the
most important 6 significant programme offered by the faculty
of Arabic 6 Islamic 0tudies AIOU. 1his programme is reputed
as one of the best programmes in public sector universities of
"a)istan. 1he graduates with $."hil Islamic 0tudies degree from
AIOU are serving on important academic 6 administrative post
in the colleges 6 Universities of "a)istan as well in the foreign
countries. 5ach year hundreds of candidates are applying for
admission and only few candidates are getting admission who
fulfill the requirements of the admission criteria. 1he $."hil

!andidate is required to pass Kat Keneral which is a pre

INFORMATION AND ADMISSION ,ROCEDURE

1he University has introduced a new method of depositing the
fee and admission forms for the convenience of the students. 4or
ma)ing the process more consistent and effective, the university
has entered into a formal agreement with the Jational *an) of
"a)istan, *an) Alflah :td. Allied *an) :td., 7abib *an)
:imited and first /omen *an) :imited. According to this
agreement, almost all the branches of 4irst women *an)
:imited, *an) Alfalah :imited, Allied ban) :imited, 7abib
*an) :imited and authoriFed branches of Jational *an) of
"a)istan have been nominated to receive the fee of all the
courses of the university. 1he students can deposit fee through
ban) challan forms at any approved branches. 1he ban) branch
will issue the receipt of depositing the admission form and fee.

with admission form and return !opy Jo.( of the challan
form, duly stamped, to the applicant for his<her record.

6eneral In-'rmati'n
i. 1he certificates<degrees of AIOU are equivalent to any
other recogniFed *oard<University.
ii. A candidate is required to send complete admission form
alongwith attested copies of all educational and e;perience
certificates to #epartment as mentioned in the prospectus
before or on the closing date.
iii. If an applicant of postgraduate<research level programme
does not receive any information regarding admission even
after three months of submission of application, he<she
should presume himself< herself nonselected.
iv. 1he student cannot change the specialiFation at post
graduate research level during the program after once being
admitted to a specific field.
v. A course ta)en by any student cannot be changed during the
semester
vi. 1he address of a student will not be changed during the
semester. 7owever in real hardship cases change of courses
will be allowed within fifteen days after receipt of boo)s
and deposit of prescribed fee.
vii. Admission to courses for both the 0pring and Autumn
semesters are generally offered in the months of 4ebruary
and August, respectively, whereas e;aminations commenced
in Jovember and $ay respectively. 1he continuing students
are sent computeriFed admission forms. 7owever if for any
reason, the student could not get the said form, he<she may
purchase admission form from any =egional Office of the
university or download from AIOU website aiou.edu.pk.com
and send it to the university within due date.
viii. 4ee cannot be refunded once paid for admission nor can it
be adDusted for any other programme
i;. On payment of the registration fee, each student will be
issued a registration number. 1his number must be quoted
in all the future correspondence alongwith the roll number,
course8s9, code number and semester.
;. 0tudy material shall be mailed to the students at their given
address.
;i. After receipt of the study pac)age, students are usually
intimated by the part time tutors appointed for each course
for tutorial guidance, within fifteen days. If you do not get
information about tutors, you are required to send your
assignment by registered post to the concerned =egional
#irector, Assistant =egional #irector without delayS you are
also required to retain a photocopy of all your assignments.
;ii. =ules and regulations framed, amended and changed from
time to time by the authorities, bodies of the university will
be effective as deemed necessary. 1he student will have to
abide by all such rules and regulations from the date of their
implementation.

;iii. A student who fails in continuous assessment component is
not eligible to reappear but will be allowed to reregister for
the same course at its ne;t offering semester by the
university.
;iv. It is the responsibility of the student to remain in touch with
the department regarding the selected program.
;v. A student already enrolled to a program or a specialiFation
of a program shall not be allowed to transfer or to get
admission to another program unless he<she formally
postpones it till the completion of the new program or
withdraws from the previous program.
;vi. After completion of a program successfully, a student has to
apply to the !ontroller of 5;aminations for issuance of
certificate<degree.
;vii. 1he university reserves the right to change the contents of
this prospectus without any prior notice as per university
policy.
;viii. 1he student must inform the Admission #epartment in
writing within the period of %+ days after receipt of study
material parcel, If found any wrongshor! ma!eria" #ooks
which is no! according !o !he admission form check "is! or
mis!ake in name and address. Jo request for any change
will be entertained after the stipulated period.
;i;. !hec) the boo)s and tally with the course codes mentioned
on the address label pasted on the registered pac)et. If there
is any discrepancy, write immediately to Admission
#epartment for correction< supply of requisite boo)s.
;;. Admission forms incomplete in any respect will not be
entertained and will be returned after close of semester to
the students indicating the deficiency in clear terms with
advise to request for refund of fee.
;;i. Admission form received without prescribed fee or less fee
or fee deposited after due date will not be considered.
;;ii. In case of discrepancies in the name of student< 4atherHs
name of the student or difference in name mentioned in
his<her other educational certificates, the name on the
$atric certificate of the student will be considered as
correct name. 1he 5;amination #epartment shall also issue
certificate< degree on the said name.
;;iii. In case provision of forged documents for admission, not
only the admission will be refused to the applicant but the
fee deposited by him<her will also be forfeited. 1he
university may proceed further in the matter.
