- Harmony: study of chords, scales and melodies. Harmony study includes the analysis of
chord progressions to show important relationships between chords and the key a song is
in.
- Ear training: identifying what your ear hears. Ear training makes the connections
between your musical mind, your ears, and the sounds around you, music notation and
your instrument.
- Interval: the distance between two notes.

- Tonal center: predominant tone that you hear in a song or progression, scale degree 1, the

- Triad: three note chord
- Major triad: the 1 ,3 and 5 intervals, root, major third, minor third
- Minor triad: the 1, flat 3 and 5 intervals, bring the middle note down a half step
- 1 chord: tonic
- 4 chord: subdominant
- 5 chord: dominant, has a tendency to go back to the tonic
- Major sixth: My bonnie lies over the ocean
- Major seventh: sounds almost as if its off
- Minor pentatonic scale: root, flat third, (fourth), fifth, flat seventh, octave. Used for
creating melodies and for improvising over a pre-existing chord progression. Ex: Wade
in the Water
