The following exercise will walk you through the process of deploying the Web Server Role on a clean

installation of Windows Server 2008. nstalling the role services selected in these steps will provide
you with a web server with the following features and capabilities!

Lets Get Started!
&erfor"ing the Web Server Role installation re+uires the ad"inistrative credentials of the S Web
Server (d"inistrator role. ,nce logged in with the proper credentials- you.re ready to start!
/. 0aunch the (dd Roles Wi1ard using one of these "ethods!
o ,n a new Windows Server 2008 installation click Add Roles fro" the nitial
$onfiguration Task Window
o 'ro" the Server 2anager click Add Roles fro" the Roles Su""ary or Roles 2anager
2. The (dd Roles Wi1ard will begin with so"e reco""endations for the installation3 click the
Next button to proceed.
4. 5ou "ay be pro"pted to add the Windows &rocess (ctivation Service feature- in this case
click the Add Required Features button.
6. 'ro" the Select Server Roles Wi1ard step check the box labeled Web Server (IIS) and click
Next to continue.
7. (fter reviewing the Web Server nstallation introduction- click the Next button to begin
selecting the role services to install.
8. The role services selected in the left colu"n are the default for a new Server 2008 installation.
n order to install a web server with the functionality outlined in this exercise- check the boxes
for the role services selected in the right colu"n.
Note: The role services selected in this exercise "ay differ fro" your re+uire"ents. 'eel free
to explore the descriptions of the role services and select or deselect the features you see fit.
#. (fter checking the box labeled Applicatio !evelop"et- you "ay be pro"pted to add the
.9:T :nviron"ent- if it is not already installed. $lick the Add Required Features button to
continue selecting role services.
8. ,nce you.ve co"pleted selecting the role services to install for your web server- click the
Next# button to proceed.
;. Review the installation selections and confir" the" by clicking the Istall button. The (dd
Roles Wi1ard will then perfor" the installation of the selected role services.
/0. When the wi1ard is finished installing the roles- review the installation results and click the
$lose button to co"plete the installation.

Thanks to the (dd Roles Wi1ard- setting up a web server has never been easier. Selecting fro" the
"any role services used by a web server is intuitive since the services are well defined and any feature
dependencies re+uired by a role service are pro"pted to be installed on de"and.
,ut of the box- the web server should be configured to allow access with anony"ous authentication
locally and over the internet. Serving content over the internet "ay still be blocked by firewalls on
your network or internet service provider <S&=. %osting a web site via a do"ain na"e will re+uire the
& address of the server be registered through an authori1ed $(99 registrar.
So"e of the security and "anage"ent role services "ay still re+uire additional configuration or
enabling. ,nce the steps are co"plete the server should be ready to host web sites- applications- and
services as well as files via 'T&.
To confir" that nternet nfor"ation Services is started and able to serve content visit (ttp:))local(ost)
with nternet :xplorer or another web browser on the server. f your installation was successful- you
should be brought to the web page pictured below!
