25 TEXAS TECH OPENS SEASON WITH NON-CONFERENCE VICTORY
Red Raiders show balance on offense and defense
Lubbock, Texas (September 1, 2014) The top 25 ranked Red Raider football team orchestrated a 52-10 victory over Central Arkansas in its first game of the season. The game took place on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
According to head coach Kliff Kingsbury, achieving balance on offense and defense is one of the Red Raiders top priorities this season. The team got off to an excellent start with 621 yards total offense while holding the Bears to one touchdown.
The offense looked sharp, as they looked to match last seasons average of 511 yards of total offense per game. QB Davis Webb led the outstanding performance on offense. The sophomore showed improvement from his debut last season, completing 28 of 40 passes for 5 touchdowns and no interceptions.
I would say it was a pretty good start. I thought we were a little sluggish on our first two possessions, but we were able to overcome that. I think that is something we have to work this week in practice so that doesnt happen again. As an offense, its important for us to get off to a good start so that we are dictating the tempo of the game, said Webb after the game.
Webbs biggest target on the night was junior WR Jakeem Grant. Grant caught 10 passes for a total of 175 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Senior WR Bradley Marquez was not far off, logging an impressive 6 catches and three touchdowns.
In addition to dominating the passing game, the Red Raiders went 11 of 17 on third-down conversions. The team brought the heat in the running game, led by Junior RB Deandre Washington who rushed for 87 yards. Washington also hauled in four catches and was responsible for one of the teams 7 touchdowns.
On defense, the Red Raiders were led by junior LB Pete Robertson and sophomore DB Justis Nelson. The pair made the defensive presence known from kickoff, combining for 15 tackles. Robertson displayed his signature hard-hitting intensity with 1 sack and 3 pass deflections. Altogether, the defense held Central Arkansas to just 239 yards total offense and under 30 percent on third-down conversions.
The game reached a climax in the third quarter. Tech pulled off three consecutive defensive stops allowing the offense to score 21 unanswered points.
A major highlight of the game was Nelsons fourth quarter interception. In his first career interception, Nelson picked off opposing QB Hayden Hildebrand on a third-down pass to WR Jatavious Wilson. This play ignited the crowd and sealed the fate of the Bears for the night.
Attendance was at 60,601, constituting the fifth-largest crowd at Jones AT&T Stadium in school history. Coach Kingsbury gives credit to Red Raider fans for helping the team achieve a victory in their season opener:
The crowd was fantastic tonight. With the temperatures as warm as they were in the afternoon, I really thought the crowd brought it tonight. That type of atmosphere is what we will need every night we play at Jones AT&T Stadium if we want to accomplish our goal of a Big 12 Championship, said Kingsbury after the game.
The Red Raiders look to move up in the rankings by making improvements on offense and special teams as they prepare for their next opponent. On Saturday, September 6, the team will travel to El Paso to face the Miners of UTEP for the first time since 2007. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 12-6-1.
