Charges laid in Siksika homicide

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A call about a hit-and-run turned into a case of second-degree murder charges being laid in Siksika this past week. A 41-year-old Siksika man phoned the Gleichen RCMP detachment to report a hit-and-run on April 30, at approximately 9:30 a.m. It was reported as a hit-and-run to us over the phone and then we said, well when youre reporting a collision come to the ofce and well take your information here, said Staff Sgt. James McLaren. The man did not want to come into the ofce, and so a couple of ofcers were dispatched to his location. At that point they are looking around at the evidence and things arent adding up so they dug a little deeper. They did their investigation at the scene and were able to determine it wasnt just a hit-and-run, it was a little bit more serious than that, resulting in a fatality, said McLaren. An altercation allegedly began between the accused and his partner in the early hours of April 30. Police were informed that there had been a domestic dispute which resulted in the suspect running over his partner with his vehicle, and then disposing of the body in a nearby wooded area. Gleichen RCMP located the body and conrmed he was deceased. The accused also faces a charge of indignity to a body and has been remanded into custody. He was scheduled to appear in Drumheller Provincial Court on May 7. The outcome of the court appearance was not available at press time. This is the rst homicide of the year for the Gleichen detachment. The homicide investigation was handled by the RCMP Calgary Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Calgary Medical Examiners Ofce, with assistance from Calgary-based RCMP Forensic Identication Section, General Investigation Section, Police Dog Service, and Forensic Collision Reconstruction Section. The last took place on May 18, 2013 when two women were charged with the death of 26-year-old Tak Tai Lawrence Leung of Chilliwack, B.C.

Deceased male found in alley

Residents in the downtown area of Strathmore got a startling surprise when they woke up Monday morning, May 5. An autopsy was done the next day, during which the Medical Examiners Office in Calgary determined that the 18-year-old males death was not criminal. Weekend debit fraud sweeps through Strathmore

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A possible case of debit skimming has made its way to Strathmore. The banks cannot conrm or deny anything because they are bound by the protection of privacy laws. Upon investigation there are numerous conrmed cases, with thousands of dollars being withdrawn from unsuspecting accounts. There have been conrmed cases from just about every banking institution. Christin Reinhart received a text message from a friend on the morning of May 5. The friend was on her way to her bank, ATB, because she noticed $450 missing. When the friend got to the bank she messaged Reinhart again telling her to check her online account, knowing that Reinhart also uses ATB, and telling her that there were quite a few people at the bank with the same issue. I did then go check my online bank and immediately noticed a debit transaction from May 4 for $452.17. The transaction said international HSBC debit, said Reinhart. So right away I went down to ATB and got in the very long line up. The lady (bank teller) was very helpful and gave us new bank cards as well as gave us a form to sign that they faxed right away to fraud department and said we would get it back hopefully in a few days as well as the $5 fee we were charged for some reason. She also said ATB would call us as soon as the money was returned. Reinhart also said in speaking to others in line there was a gentleman who had three debit transactions for the same amount withdrawn, all in a row. A woman in the line overheard the conversation, and when she asked the teller to check her account she found she was also debited that amount. Cheryl Libbys bank caught on to the fraudulent withdrawal. I bank with CIBC and had an international fraudulent withdrawal of 229.01. My bank caught it before I did and notied me that my card may have been compromised. I spoke with them and they were great and had already suspended my card, said Libby. It gives me condence that my bank is on top of things but It makes me a little wary as the new Chip technology is supposed to protect us more but does it really. I disabled the tap and go as I didnt have condence in that security. The use of a convenience card is nice, but being frauded sure isnt. Fortunately for both women, they will be able to make it through the few days, or week, until the funds are returned to their accounts. While they also could neither conrm nor deny anything happening in town, Chinook Credit Union did release tips on how to protect yourself and your money. Fraud is, unfortunately, not as an uncommon occurrence in our society as we would like for it to be. Quite often there is a misconception that fraud only happens to others, and never to us, but the truth is, it can happen to anyone. One of the most common types of fraud out there is debit card fraud. It involves the least amount of contact possible, and can be difcult to trace. The good news is, there are ways to protect yourself. We wanted to touch base and remind everyone of the different ways to protect yourselves from debit card fraud. 1. PROTECT YOUR PIN. Be aware when you enter your PIN. Be sure that no one can see from any angle, including above you. Fraudsters cant commit the fraud without your PIN. A great prevention tool is to change your PIN on a regular basis. 2. Avoid using debit machines that have the swipe, rather than the chip function, as they can still commit fraud the old way with those machines (it will become legislation in 2015 that all merchants to be equipped with chip readers, rather than the swipe function). 3. Be aware of how deeply your card goes into the chip debit machines, tampered terminals may allow chip payment card to slide further into the terminal reader, enabling criminals to capture sensitive information from the magnetic strip. You should be able to comfortably have your thumb, from the tip of it, up to the rst joint, on your card still when it is in the machine. If the card goes in deeper than that, dont put in your PIN. 4. Keep your eyes on your card. If you can, dont let another person handle your card. Preferably you would insert it into the machine, or, if absolutely necessary, swipe it. 5. When at ATMs or kiosks, check to see if everything looks normal around the card slot before putting your card in. Look for any edges that arent sealed down, etc. 6. Lastly, and importantly, be sure to check your accounts often, and report any suspicious transactions or activity including transactions that have not appeared through your account (which may be an indication of a bogus terminal) to your Financial Institution immediately. Outside of debit card fraud, if you believe that you have been defrauded, or approached by a fraudster, in a different manner, such as through an e-mail or telephone scam, please be sure to report it. Even if you caught on and avoided the fraud yourself, someone else may not be so lucky, and, by reporting it, you may help prevent it from happening to them. Fraudulent or suspicious activity should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, through its website at www.antifraudcentre.ca, or by telephone at 1-888-495-8501. You should also report any fraud that has taken place on your account to your nancial institution. For more information on fraud prevention, visit the Canadian Competition Bureau, and view their fraud prevention feature from Fraud Prevention Month in March.http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cbbc.nsf/eng/h_00122.html.

Brentwood participates in Music Monday

MANNY EVERETT Times Contributor On Monday, May 5 Music Monday celebrated its 10th Anniversary. This year Brentwood school participated in a nationwide synchronized performance of I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing) with Chris Hadeld and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Maestro Bramwell Tovey over a webcast that was broadcasted on the big screen in their gymnasium. The Senior Choir sang Firey and Humpty Dumpty for students and staff and some parents before presentations were made to all of Brentwoods choir members. Each participant in any of the three choirs received a commemorative medal for participating in the music programs this year. The students showed their appreciation by also acknowledging their music volunteers, who received small gifts. The Brentwood School Senior Choir was recommended to represent the Drumheller Music Festival at the Alberta Music Festivals Provincial Choral Finals on Friday, May 9 at McDougall United Church in Edmonton, as a result of the Superior rating they received participating in the Drumheller and District Music Festival on Thursday, March 20. They will be competing with other Grade 4-6 choirs from across Alberta selected to represent their particular music festival. Each choir has to sing two songs and we will be singing Firey by Andy Beck and Humpty Dumpty by Dave and Jean Perry. Their accompanist is long time community volunteer Kathie Zakresky.

A day for women

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Dozens of women gathered together at the Strathmore Legion on May 2 for the bi-annual Womens Conference. The conference began with drumming with keynote speaker Judy Atkinson. Atkinsons Make a Joyful Noise presentation involved getting everyone in the room to drum together, and to share a laugh. The actual sessions began with In the Heat of the Night a discussion about menopause, and Saying No which was about the ve agreements. There were four sessions for the day, two running concurrently in the morning, and another two in the afternoon. Jennifer Ash is a spiritual life coach who also teaches energy healing at the University of Calgary, along with counselling and Angel therapy. She spoke of the ve agreements, which are the principles for being. Everybody wants more love, and more enjoyment and more vitality in their life, less conict, less pain, less suffering, less judgment. These ve agreements are a way of creating that for yourself, said Ash. It is about us taking responsibility for our thoughts and the feeling that we have. The ve agreements are to be impeccable with your word; do not assume anything; do not take anything personally; always do your best and lastly to be skeptical but learn to listen. What (the last one) really means is be mindful that everybodys truth is a little bit different. Somebody elses truth, you can accept it, but you dont have to accept it as your own, said Ash. Its about being mindful and true to yourself, and honouring yourself and knowing that if you honour yourself in a loving and generous way you will naturally be honouring other people. Lynn Walker with Wheatland FCSS helped organize the event. She said it was a wonderful day, and the feedback from everyone who attended was positive. Walker attended some of both afternoon sessions, Portion size does matter and Container gardening. I sat through half of the container gardening and I was getting really into that and I thought I better go upstairs as well. I went upstairs and they had the one on the balanced plate was all about watching what you should be eating, and then they had the chef there giving out samples, said Walker. It was really, really a good time. Joyce Bazant with Wheatland Further Education Society also helped organize the event, and attended it. I thought the conference went great, everyone seemed to be really happy with it, said Bazant. I attended the Jennifer Ash the ve agreements and I was very impressed

with that. I nd her very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed that class. Bazant also participated in the container gardening session put on by Eagle Lake and again found it to be a fun, and informative session. Bazant said if anyone has any suggestions for the next womens conference in 2016 they are welcome to give any of the three organizing groups a call. She said they are always open to suggestions about different ideas people would like to see happen. The Womens Conference is held every other year, alternating with the seniors conference. Wheatland FCSS, Wheatland Further Education Society and the Growing Families Society spearheaded the event.

About 60% of all prescriptions filled in Canada are filled with generic drugs. Health Canada ensures that generics contains the same drug in the same amount and acts the same way as the brand name drug. In Canada, we do have safe and reliable generic drugs. Presented by the Remax Realty Horizon team of Carey Rose (lr), Debbie Enslen and Hayley Poirier, the Remax Matinee was offered as a way of giving back to the local community. Ofcer accused in sexual assault claim

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A press release was sent out on May 1, outlining allegations of sexual assault by a Strathmore RCMP ofcer. A statement of claim was led against the RCMP detachment and the constable in question. The claim alleges that on Dec. 21, 2012 the female victim was being driven home by the constable, and was forced to strip and perform oral sex on the ofcer. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the case, and an internal investigation is also being done by the RCMP. Clint Docken, counsel for the victim, questions why nothing has happened with the case in the year since the woman was rst questioned about the incident. Our understanding is the investigation is still outstanding, although for whatever reason they have decided that no criminal charges are appropriate. Which isnt unusual, that happens virtually all of the time, said Docken. Were just looking for some accountability, and the accountability hasnt come to this point in time in terms of the investigations. The claim was led as a last resort and (the victim) wants her situation dealt with. Shes concerned that there are going to be other potential victims out there. Docken said his client reached out to his ofce for help in January of 2013, shortly after the alleged incident took place. Shes not doing that well, she is under medical treatment. It had a pretty signicant effect on her and to this day she is still experiencing repercussions, said Docken. The next step for Docken and his client is to le a statement of defence, and then the matter will proceed to questioning. If the matter doesnt get resolved it will go to trial. In terms of our experience with the RCMP there doesnt appear to be any inclination to resolve these matters, so were anticipating it to go to trial, said Docken. Staff Sgt. Kevin Reillys only comment about the matter is that the member is suspended with pay, and has been since the RCMP were rst advised of the incident.

Hope Bridges art auction

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor Artists from all over the county and Strathmore have generously donated pieces to Hope Bridges art auction fundraiser that takes place Saturday, May 10 at the Strathmore Golf. Many of them will be attending to show their support for the programming of arts in the community. They include: Ed Anderson, Katrina Reinwald, Joe van Keulen, Royal Sproule, Lynn Day, Gwen Tellier and Joe Bratton. Various mediums of art including photography, charcoal, acrylic, mixed media, Up-cycling and more will be on display. Some businesses and individuals have thrown their support behind Hope Bridges fundraising event by also donating items, including: Kims Catering, Rosebud Theatre, JB Music Therapy, and Connie Kopp. Items will range from $40-$400, which leaves something to bid for everyones price range. While the initial fundraising goal is to raise $10,000, the hope is increase and raise awareness of the arts and to provide insights into the different mediums that art comes in. This includes sharing information on each piece, like the cost of supplies, how it was made, the time it took and the inspiration behind the piece. Hope Bridges Coordinator Wanda Reinholdt says we welcome and encourage conversation about the art with us and those artists in attendance. The schedule for the evenings festivities includes a silent auction leading to the live auction of the three-featured pieces between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

REMEMBErING OUr PAST

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor

~ George & Marianne Pinchbeck

reinforced the outhouse with extra braces so that it wouldnt get tipped over. Pranksters found out and cut the braces with a saw, and the outhouse did tip over. The farmer next door also decided to pull a prank on would be outhouse pranksters. He waited until just before dusk before moving the outhouse back a few feet. Marianne often wonders how those Halloweeners got clean before they went home! Marianne took all her education in Onoway, through Grade 12, then became a medical records librarian at the brand new Stony Plains Hospital for the next 3.5 years. She and George had started dating soon after she graduated from Onoway High School, and when George started studying at the University of Alberta, she moved to Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton for a year. They were married at Heatherdown in 1964, and have two children - a son and a daughter - and two grandsons. From 1972 to 1975, they lived in Spirit River, and this was a whole new culture. The local people soon had them addicted to the wonderful Ukrainian foods like perogies, cabbage rolls and other ethnic delicacies. They found no one gave a second thought to getting up at 2 a.m. to curl in a 24-hour bonspiel, or drive for an hour to Grande Prairie for a coffee! After their family arrived, Marianne became a stay-at-home Mum, but she soon found outside interests that included coaching junior high basketball, helping to start a hospital auxiliary; she worked occasionally for the Dept. of Agriculture, assisted with the Boy Scouts, sang in choirs, played the organ at church, etc. When George was appointed as the new principal at Sedgewick Central High School, they enjoyed touring the area to see the abundance of waterfowl, such as American Bittern. One of the teachers decided a teacher football team should be formed to challenge the student team. As principal George became a member of this group, and came home from a game very sore and bruised! Some of the students at this school travelled 63 miles each way to attend school! Following their move to Strathmore, Marianne went back to work at Western Feedlots, and also served as a teaching assistant in kindergarten, before going back to University to take her teaching degree. She taught at Brentwood for 16 years, followed by part-time for 14 years at Golden Hills Resource Centre, before retiring in December 2013. Their children and grandchildren, who live nearby, are avid sports players, playing hockey, basketball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, and being on track teams. Both George and Marianne love following and cheering them on. Besides the physical benets for their children, they have gained wonderful life-long friends from the spectator seats. George has been a member of Strathmore Lions for 38 years, a member of the board for the Aquatic Society, has served in many positions on Strathmore United Church Board, sings with both the United Church Choir and the Gleichen & Community Choir, and is a shareholder and a member of Strathmore Golf Club. Marianne also sings with the Gleichen & Community Choir, is a volunteer with Christmas Hamper (childrens toys), and assists with the United Church bi-annual Thrift Sale, and told me she is addicted to golf! They have enjoyed travelling to places like Africa, Australia, South America and Europe. George is an avid reader of non-ction and has a library containing over 2,000 books, which he lets Marianne read on occasion! They advised that when they moved here in 1975 the population was approximately 1,100, streets were dirt, not paved, there were boardwalks down each side. The golf course was only nine holes, and some of the greens were sand. On reection, they feel very fortunate to having made their home here in Strathmore, and raised their family here. It has been a great place to live.

Georges family originated in Lincolnshire, England, and in 1912 sailed to Halifax. They crossed Canada to Alberta initially settling in Irvington, before homesteading in Mayerthorpe in 1917. George was born in Edmonton in 1940, the eldest of a family of ve with two brothers and two sisters. Mariannes family originated in the Ruhr Valley, in Germany. They arrived in the Edmonton area in 1931, before moving to Onoway, Alta. in the early 1940s, where she was born. Her parents worked for another German family, with her mother doing the cooking and laundry, while her father was a farm labourer and worked on the roads. In the winter, her father sold blocks of ice that he had cut from the nearby lake. George started his education at the one-room Connorcreek School, when he was four years old. His mother was a teacher there, and while hired labour looked after his siblings, George accompanied his mother to school-riding there on horseback. After graduating from Mayerthorpe School following Grade 12 he completed a 12-month teacher training course at the University of Alberta, and became a teacher (at the age of 18) at Onoway School for ve years, where he rst met Marianne. During those ve years he completed his Masters Degree of Education, at night school, and this was the start of his career in education. Over the next 11 years he served in several locations in Alberta as Principal and Superintendent, before moving to Strathmore in 1975 where he continued to work as Superintendent of Schools for Wheatland County for eight years, then the Rockyview School Division thru 1995, when he retired. When he was a young boy, George and his brother had trap lines to catch weasels, and with the fur from squirrels they shot, they sold the pelts for 65 cents each. The boys all had many adventures at the farm, and to this day have scars from axes, saws, and barbwire fences, proving they werent always careful in what they were doing. Marianne was raised on a small mixed farm, near Onoway. There were ve girls and one boy in the household, and no plumbing, no electricity and no telephone. As the youngest, Marianne thought her four older sisters were quite attractive, and boys came by car for ve miles each way, just to ask for a date, on very dusty roads. One Halloween her father had

Women facing unexpected pregnancy receive local support

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER Times Contributor A group of Strathmore residents approached the Calgary Pregnancy Care Centre a year ago, with a request. They dreamed of opening a Pregnancy Care Centre in Strathmore, but, nancially and logistically, the task was daunting. Would the Calgary centre work with them to open a satellite centre in Strathmore? The Calgary Pregnancy Care Centre (CPCC) would and they did. This month, those dreams and that hard work will come to fruition with the birth of the Strathmore Pregnancy Care Centre (SPCC). The SPCC aims to support women, men and couples from Strathmore and surrounding areas, including the Siksika Nation. Strathmore ofce hours will be two days a week -- Tuesdays from 1 to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m., said Susan Herman, Director of Operations at the CPCC. At all other times, people can get support through the 24hour CPCC helpline. Jenn Page, coordinator of the Strathmore centre, will work with local volunteers to provide onsite peer counseling and lots of community referrals, Herman said. For services like post-adoption counseling, birth-moms support, post-abortion support, and prenatal or parenting classes, people may be referred to the CPCC. As the volunteer base grows out in Strathmore, and as services develop overtime, Herman said, were hoping to re-evaluate and look at the possibility of bringing some of those (services) more locally, if needed. The CPCC will also continue to offer schoolbased programs in Strathmore, Calgary, and surrounding areas. We go in and talk about healthy relationships, and boundaries, and lots of stuff in terms of sexual activity, and sexual decision-making and abstinence is presented as an option, Herman said. Were invited into schools and we present that on a volunteer basis. Herman expressed the centres gratitude to the people who made this beginning possible. The steering committee, those residents who dreamed of a Strathmore Pregnancy Care Centre, organized information evenings, shared their vision with colleagues and friends, and secured donations such as the ofce space contributed by Wayde Garrioch, Keith Garrioch and Rob Desjardins. A local church hosted a fundraising dessert night. And about 20 local people attended volunteer training, so theyll be prepared to provide peer-counseling as soon as the centre opens. The SPCC welcomes ongoing donations and additional volunteers. On May 11, Mothers Day, the CPCC and SPCC will begin their annual Formula for Hope campaign, raising funds by stufng money into baby bottles, which can be obtained through community churches. Individuals interested in volunteering at the SPCC are encouraged to contact Jenn Page through the website. The Strathmore Pregnancy Care Centre is at 304-3rd Avenue, Strathmore, on the second oor of the Aztec Real Estate building. Jenn Page may be reached through the website www.pregcare. com, by email at strathmore@pregcare.com or by phone at 587-896-0902. The CPCC 24-hour helpline is 403-269-3110. Were really pleased to be able to offer these services locally, Herman said, and look forward to working with the community and in the community.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Concerns shared new school

To the Editor As a follow up to Carol McKays letter in the May 2 issue of the Strathmore Times, I too am very concerned about the proposed location of the new East Wheatland School for the reasons she stated as well as others. We are farmers who farm land immediately along one mile of highway 561 which connects to the intersection of 840, being the intersections that virtually all trafc will go to and from the proposed school. I am also a grandparent of several students in East Wheatland, an employer whose staff have children attending the Standard School and a ratepayer in both the County of Wheatland and the Village of Standard. The building of the proposed East Wheatland School on this particular land, being NW11-24-22-W4, will in my opinion and observations, seriously erode and negatively impact the trafc safety at this intersection of highway 561 and 840. While farming the land along this highway, we have been very surprised at the very high volume of trafc along these roads, particularly Highway 561. Volumes are signicantly higher in the mornings and late afternoons, about the same time school vehicles would be travelling these roads. Adding the school trafc to this will signicantly increase the volume. As evidenced in our Province, four way stops, special speed zones, rumble strips etc. do not stop disaster from happening at our intersections. As a matter of fact, one of the County of Wheatlands citizens was killed at a four way stop as recently as April 27, 2014. Disastrous accidents in towns, where speeds are a fraction of that on our highways, rarely happen. Also, what will the volume of trafc be at this intersection, 10, 20, 30 years from now? In addition, there is a small hill on 561 that reduces the line of sight when entering the intersection from the south. A school building typically has a life of more than 50 years. I am sure GHSD has some data on this, but why add risk to the lives of our students, staff, friends, families and other unknown people when it is not necessary. In addition to the additional trafc safety challenges there is another risk that could be eliminated. My understanding is that there is a 750 p.s.i. natural gas pipeline crossing the proposed school grounds. Granted, the risk of a pipeline rupture is small, but if it did it could be very serious. Also, would this add to the insurance costs of the school property and liability coverage? Government and other governing bodies should not unnecessarily be putting its citizens or members in harms way. While government probably does not have a legal responsibility to protect its citizens, I believe it certainly has a moral responsibility to promote their safety. Building such a school near high volume trafc and high-speed roads adds a tremendous safety risk. Other negatives to the proposed location of this school, in addition to the extra costs stated in McKays letter are the right to farm issues, unnecessarily taking agricultural land out of production, violations of the spirit of the Wheatland Countys new Municipal Development Plan and others I am sure I have missed. It is not too late to do the right thing for the right reasons. A very concerned resident Don Sundgaard Wheatland County

S-U-V, easy as 1-2-3!

PAT FULE Fule for Thought
Weve been shopping for SUVs lately, and by test driving, I mean many test drives. In fact, over three days, we test drove 12 different SUVs! Debbie and I are absolutely different in these situations. She will have a notebook and make meticulous notes on each vehicle. Shes like Rommel would have been when he planned major tank campaigns in WWII Africa! Shes got maps, notes, and strategies all planned! I on the other hand, y more by the seat of my pants. Its funny how salesmen can be, they have to ride in the back with you, and some really like to talk and promote their brands. We felt badly for one Calgary guy, as he said to oor it on Deerfoot Trail. I did, but there was no real ooring happening ... just a mediocre acceleration. Wow, I said to Debbie, as our eyes met on this slow take off. You can just feel the power! We even pushed ourselves back in the seats to make it look like it had power. Poor guy, he actually fell for it. Yep, she sure does move, he replied. I asked this salesman and some of the others if they ever get scared on test drives. I mean, you sit in the back seat with total strangers driving you around you have no control. One guy said a potential buyer raced him down Macleod Trail and they almost got to Okotoks before he decided to turn back! The guy had even crossed three lanes to turn off and head back, while the salesman rediscovered the power of prayer! He actually told the driver to pull over in the shoulder, and get out! When you do nally get closer to dealing, is when the pain sets in. The van you bought 10 years ago with all the bells and whistles is not worth anywhere near what you thought. Its like, why do we even buy something thats going to lose that much value over time? Would we buy houses that drop in value every year? Would we invest in a company that loses money every year? We do this with vehicles its very confusing! The bargaining is always interesting you hear all kinds of strategies. Dont tell them anything about monthlies, get their lowest price rst, dont mention a trade-in until the end. Theres so much to remember, its like playing poker when you know the guys a card shark. We bargained, we negotiated, even little things like oor mats became items to talk over, as far as getting the right price. We made the salesman go back and forth between us and his manager, as we tried new ideas out on him. I even thought of punching Debbie in the arm to get her to cry, thinking that might help on the price! I did tell her a sad story about a rescue dog video I saw, but they didnt make her cry either! Finally, the deal was struck, and we were on to the next hurdle the dreaded visit to the nance department! Here, we would talk about undercoating, seat protection, rock chip protection, and life/disability insurance. Every item kept the price slowly creeping up, and I began to hope her ofce had a wet bar! I could really use a tall Rye/Coke! No luck, I had to nish the negotiating sober, I was at the ladys mercy! You also nd out in this chamber of horrors, that youre worth more dead than alive! If something terrible were to happen to me, why, the SUV would be totally paid off! I snuck a look at Debbie to see if she had a reaction to that one. I hoped her gears werent grinding about getting me white water raft or sky diving lessons! Finally, we were told that our SUV is built in Georgia, and would be shipped in about a week. I guess knowing it was built in the good old USA was supposed to help. Yep, Georgia, where the workers can now pack handguns, they make and run their own moonshine, and some even marry the prettiest cousin at their family reunion! I felt better already!

Flames give incentive to read

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor The Reading ... Give It A Shot program is sponsored by the Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation (CEPF) and the Calgary Flames. The program ran from January to March, and Brentwood School (among others in the school division) was provided with Calgary Flames trading cards, rewarding students for every 100 minutes they read at home. Each trading card featured a different Calgary Flames player or Harvey the Hound. The purpose of the program was to promote reading and the ultimate goal for students was to collect all 24 trading cards (most students wanted them kept together in the poster format they arrived in so they became a complete set to display), thus reading 2,400 minutes at home. Brentwood school had about 50 students from Grades 1-6 achieve this goal this year and because of the school-wide participation, the organization also donated a Calgary Flames jersey. To be fair, each student who read the 2,400 minutes or more had their name put into the draw for the prized jersey. Sarabeth Hillis, Grade 5, was the lucky participant whose name was drawn, and she had read a total of 7,225 minutes by the time the program had ended so it was very well deserved.

Make Yourself Heard on Pensions

Albertans are making themselves heard. Theyve stood up for workplace pensions. Theyve let their MLAs know that laws designed to undermine workplace pension plans are unacceptable. And the public has made the government pause. Bills 9 and 10 are being put to public hearings, and wont return to the legislature until fall. Albertans now have an opportunity to discuss real retirement security for all. Tell the Alberta government to strengthen not undermine retirement security. Rena

Female
This beautiful girl came to Happy Cat over a yr ago after she was found emaciated & almost frozen to death outside. She survived and has done remarkably well with no lasting effects from the low body temp she was found with. She is a wonderful cat, very cuddly, quiet, clean and so sweet. She does ok with other cats once settled. Great with kids & dogs any size. Please consider giving Rena the loving forever home she deserves. Rena will be going up for showcasing at PetSmart (Sunridge location in Calgary) starting April 4, 2014 :)

Celebrate Your Child

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Contributor The 5 for Life coalition is hosting a Celebrate Your Child educational, and fun, fair at Wheatland Elementary School on May 10. The day begins with registration at 9:30 a.m. followed by interactive learning stations from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The stations will include areas on the physical domain, emotional development, social development, and on the health and wellbeing of children, and the nal station will be about language and development. The whole event is geared towards kids ages 4 and 5, but younger siblings wont be turned away. The idea of it will be the parents will go to a station with their kids for 15 or 20 minutes at each station. Then the afternoon opens up for the more active (side of things), said Lana Lane, chairperson of the 5 for Life coalition. In the afternoon there will be a bouncy house, Shots N Giggles photo booth, face painting, and a

magician; Lane said they are hoping a re truck and police car will also be there for the kids to check out. Between the interactive learning morning and the physically active afternoon, there will be a pancake brunch. The day is open to every family with a four and ve-year-old child in the county. There is no fee to attend, but 5 for Life would like people to pre-register if they can. That being said, no one will be turned away. The fair is a kick off to the 5 for Life coalition and all they plan to do in the county. The coalition is fairly new, and was formed based off of the results that the Alberta Government found in the Early Child Development Mapping Project for the province. With the identication of those ve (development) domains, and the results that weve seen, we need to be addressing some of the development issues of our four and ve-yearolds. Specically in Wheatland County the areas of struggle are speech and language, communication and the social development, said Lane. Our coalition received $50,000 from the Alberta government as the initial grant to get initiatives going to encourage optimal development. If anyone is wanting to see the results of how kids did in Wheatland County the results are on that ECMap site, www.ecmap.ca. The terric two and three-year-old child fair will be in October, and in June, July and August there will be the sports days, which is when people will really be seeing 5 for Life coalition members out and about. Lane recently came back from provincial meetings, and even though Alberta is one of the richest provinces, and it is also one of the lowest for how our kids are doing. Over 30 per cent of kids are struggling in areas of development. Golden Hills School Division and Christ the Redeemer will be at the fair and will have booths set up to answer questions about what skills are needed to help the kids succeed when they do come to school.

Be aware and be prepared

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Are you prepared to survive without services for 72 hours? That is the message Bill McMurtry, a warning preparedness meteorologist for south central Alberta working with the Meteorological Services of Canada, asked lecture attendees at the County of Wheatland on April 30. McMurtry was asked to speak to ratepayers, to stimulate conversations on emergency preparedness. May 4-10 is designated as Emergency Preparedness Week. One of the things emergency preparedness ofcials like to see is people who can be self-sufcient for a 72-hour period. This assumes there is no natural gas, no running water, no electricity or telecommunications. If you took all those elements out of your life could you survive? asked McMurtry. McMurtry said that few people think about their safety ahead of time and often wait until they have gone through a devastating experience to consider what they could have done better. McMurtry said being prepared can often mean the difference between life and death. So what should people do to prepare for emergencies? He advises residents to know the risks they are vulnerable to. Make a plan to deal with emergencies, which includes advising family members and assembling resources to sustain themselves for at least 72 hours. A good site about identifying risks and making plans is www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/ hzd/ds-eng.aspx another site is www. aema.alberta.ca . McMurtry encourages everyone to become knowledgeable about what to do when an emergency situation occurs. It includes things like knowing your emergency exits and corridors. Have emergency numbers ready and the information you need quickly available. Know where the shut-off valves for your natural gas and water are and learn how to shut them off. Identify and prepare the resources you might need for a 72-hour period without services. Have an emergency medical kit, about two litres of water per person, non-perishable food, manual can openers, cash, batteries and ashlights and specialized items like medications. Small kits can be left in the trunks of cars at all times and should be revisited at least once a year. The warning system for this region is generated at the Environment Canada weather ofce in Edmonton, which transmits any alerts every 24 hours through the Emergency Alert System province-wide. The Alberta Emergency Alert is probably one of the best alert systems in all of Canada and the envy of other areas in Canada. The government of Alberta developed the system and Environment Canada plays a part by delivering the weather-related information to the system, said McMurtry. Messages go to all the media centres and internet services and municipalities. The scale moves from a watch, which means conditions are favourable to the formation of an event, to a warning that indicates the event is imminent, which alerts individuals to the severity of the threats.

LEClAIR Times Reporter Ellis and Elly Van Schurr from Langdon are holding a Zumbathon fundraiser on May 25 to help raise money for the Lockie family and their son Braxton. When Tara Lockie, also from Langdon, was approximately 20 weeks pregnant doctors told her something might be wrong with her baby. Tara and her husband Brock knew more than anything that, no matter what, they wanted to have their son, and that they would love him more than anything. Braxton (Bubbe) Lockie was born on May 18, 2013. At three months old he started having seizures. Scans showed there are physical differences with his brain. Braxton has DandyWalker Syndrome, which is a congenital brain malformation. The Lockie family is trying to raise over $30,000 to be able to buy a swim spa pool for Braxton. The one they hope to purchase will meet his needs the most, but it also happens to be a little more expensive. He does water therapy at the Alberta Childrens Hospital pool. Its hard for us to get there and there isnt a whole lot of pool times for kids with his complications. It helps him so much that we just want to have one here, said Tara. Since birth Braxton has already been through surgeries to remove cataracts from both his eyes, and to insert a feeding tube. He has also had MRIs and EEGs and X-Rays. At night he needs oxygen. He has tried 10 different anti-convulsant medications and a special diet but still has 20-50 seizures a day, and is blind. All of this has delayed his development. He is still like a newborn in most ways and will be disabled for his few years he is expected to survive, said Lockie. The big thing that we have found that helps is water therapy. Braxton normally cant hold his head up or sit on his own, but with the
Braxton Lockie is almost a year old. He was born with Dandy-Walker Syndrome, a congenital brain malformation. His mom Tara and dad Brock are hoping to raise enough funds to buy him a pool.

buoyancy of water and with a otation ring, he can move his body. In water he can exercise his muscles so that he might be able to move on his own eventually. When Braxton has one of his seizures it cause a glitch in his brain that can cause him to stop breathing, and since breathing can be an issue with the Dandy-Walker Syndrome there is a high chance that during the night Braxton could pass away. Often children with DandyWalker dont live past the teenage years. When Tara and Brock were at the Alberta Childrens Hospital with Braxton over Christmas for six weeks the staff told them to pick the things that were most important to them for Braxton over the next few years, and to focus on those. So we said we want him to be comfortable, which for us meant for him to be home again, said Lockie. We wanted him to be able to swim, that was one of the things we expressed to the hospital staff and to each other because that is what gives him the most joy. We want to give him the most joy and ability to move. Comfort, smiles and swimming are the things that are going to be our priorities for the next couple of years. Braxton is such a gift to us and we just want the best for him. Were just extremely grateful for whatever help comes our way and thankful for the help we have seen and the community that has come to help us. The Zumbathon will be taking place on May 25 in Calgary from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Scandinavian Centre, 739 20 Ave NW. Advanced registration is $20 and $25 at the door. Braxton would like everyone to wear something green since its his favorite color. For more Information and registration got to http://zumbaforbraxton.weebly.com/. Tara Lockie also has a blog where people can nd out how Braxton is doing, www. braxtonlockie.com. Anyone interested can also donate through the site.

Weather watch
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor With the recent rash of tornados that devastated homes in the southern United States, it reminds us that emergencies can arise quickly anywhere. Bill McMurtry, a warning preparedness meteorologist for south central Alberta working with the Meteorological Services of Canada, came to the County of Wheatland on April 30, to discuss exactly what weather events Albertans can prepare for ahead of time. He has 24 years of experience in weather and emergency event site analysis. McMurtry said tornados, wind and lighting storms, oods, hail, heat and cold temperatures and winter storms are all part of the southern Alberta weather watches. When they hit they can do considerable amounts of damage, and Albertans should know how to react. There are about 130 weather-related deaths in Canada per year and 85 per cent of deaths are from exposure to heat or cold. There were 10 deaths due to avalanches and earth movement, four from lightning strike, two in storms, three from other natural events, said McMurtry. He said to dispel peoples fear and put the statistics in perspective, there are about 2,600 motor vehicle deaths each year. So learning to drive safely is an important part of everyday living and emergency preparedness. He said the central prairies are second largest in the world for tornado occurrences, but on average we see about 12 tornados in the Calgary area per year; overall, we really only have one tornado event per year. People may see the funnel cloud formations dipping down out of the sky, but they tend to dissipate before touching the earth. It doesnt mean that Abertans should be complacent, for if the cloud does touch down, signicant damage can occur. The width of the tornado doesnt indicate force. Small clouds can pack large destructive power, and chasing them in vehicles or ignoring them because you dont think you are in the path are bad ideas. McMurtry said they can shift direction quickly. The rating scale for tornados is not the same as that used for the hurricane winds seen in coastal areas. The scale used for tornados indicates the destructive power packed by the high force winds, with the higher rating indicating the winds in excess of 300 km per hour with enough force to scoop houses from secure concrete bases. McMurtry advised that if someone is unlucky enough to be in the area where the yearly tornado hits, they should seek shelter in buildings other than trailers, cars, or portable buildings, as they are not anchored down. In buildings, stay away from windows; this is especially important in urban highrises. Go to a secure place in the interior of buildings, or go to the basement, or under stairways. This is the second highest area for extreme winds produced from thunderstorms, and these are not tornado winds, but outow winds from thunderstorms. It is a big threat in summer. They produce more damage than tornados for this area, said McMurtry. The leading winds to the storm can occur in a time period prior to the actual storm, packing destruction over a large area. One example is the damage that occurred at the Big Valley Music Festival in 2009. Best advice? When the thunder roars, go indoors, said McMurtry. Lightning strikes are also a concern in storms and can have a 16 km striking distance, with the offshoots searching for conductive sources. If you are outside in an electrical storm, gathering in groups and standing under tall objects is discouraged. McMurtry said they have seen pastures with whole herds of cattle killed from one lighting strike; and hits on a wire fence, two km away from workers, ending in lightning injuries. Last year there were 200 injuries from lightning in Canada, with 10 people killed. Flooding can occur from rain causing rivers to overow. McMurtry said last years ood depended on a combination of the amount of rain, soil saturation and snowpack melt. Floods in this area usually occur anywhere from March to June. After last year, government agencies are diligently measuring rainfall and moisture levels and groups like the Bow Water Basin are trying to determine areas that would be affected by new river ooding. In areas under slow moving thunderstorms, a copious amount of rain can be produced over a short period of time; in this situation, small areas of ooding can occur. McMurtry advised people to move possessions to higher areas of the house, and if caught in a vehicle, avoid overpasses or low-lying restricted areas. If they are outside, avoid areas like culverts or hiking paths in ravines that could retain and intensify water ow. The biggest property threat in the summer is hail and it is responsible for the most insurance claims for the entire province. He said 80 per cent of all insurable losses in Canada are weather-related and 50 per cent happened in Alberta. Meteorologists have seen evidence of golf-ball sized hail produced by a storm. Forest res and wildres are also a concern, especially in dry weather conditions. Caution with re is always a good idea, and avoid careless disposal of cigarette butts. Find out about local evacuation routes and have an emergency preparedness kit available. The average snow fall for this area per year is about 32 cm. McMurtry said this year had about four times that amount. Winter storms and exposure to freezing temperatures in blizzards, especially for motorists is a concern. Motorists should notify someone of where they are going, have an emergency kit in the vehicle and drive to a side road until help comes, or the storm abates. The bottom line is be aware of your surroundings, monitoring the weather conditions, planning safe escape routes and having knowledge, information and resources that will prepare you for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. NO PAIN NO GAIN The other day, I was working through Jonah, Chapter 4 in preparation for a workshop Im taking in. There is an interesting part where God provides a vine for Jonahs shade in the hot sun. Jonah was happy. Then God provided a worm that chewed off the vine and it died. Now Jonah was angry. Today, in conversation with a lady in my ofce, she remarked how we believe that only good things come from God and all bad things come from the devil. Is that true? In Hebrews 12: 5-7 we read, My son, do not make light of the Lords discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?

I have been suffering with an ongoing illness for a few years now. I dont like it. And Ive prayed and been prayed for by others, expecting God to heal me. It hasnt happened. Im still not healthy and only managing because of some pills I take morning and night. There are other times where I wonder why things just dont go according to my plans or desires. We would love to blame all the bad things that happen to us on the devil, but we need to recognize that sometimes God allows things into our life in order to accomplish his purposes. Just think of the bad stuff that happened to Jesus. He was crucied! But that was so that we could have salvation through our faith in Him. May the bad things draw us closer to God as we allow him to accomplish his purposes in us. Andy Wiebe Pastor at Bow River Alliance Church

Lest we forget
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Our men and women serving in the Armed Forces are usually remembered on Nov. 11, but there are also other days of the year designated to recognize Canadians in military service. This year, May 9 has been designated to remember and recognize the contributions made by Canadians involved in the Afghanistan war. Service in Afghanistan started in 2001, with troops assigned to an international force tasked with combat, security, development, support and training operations in varying capacities and regions of Afghanistan, with the hope it would remove terrorist threats and give the Afghan people a more stable and peaceful place to live. Canadian troops were recalled from the country this year in March. The National Day of Honour parade is part of the ceremonies happening in Ottawa on May 9. The route begins at 12:30 p.m., starting at the Ottawa War Museum and proceeding to Parliament Hill. The parade will include 300 Canadian Armed Forces personnel, 32 RCMP and local police, and 50 civilians who deployed as part of the mission in Afghanistan. They will be joined by a contingent of non-serving veterans of the mission to Afghanistan. The Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royale 22nd Regimental Band, the RCMP Pipes and Drums and the Correctional Service Canada Community Service Band will provide beat, tempo and music for the march. The Governor General of Canada will receive the cavalcade at 1 p.m., at Parliament Hill where there will be a viceregal inspection and a 21-gun salute. An Air Force xed wing and rotary wing y-by will also occur. Air support was an integral part of Afghan support measures. A joint task force formed an Air Wing division in Kandahar on December 2008, when they recognized the need for additional air power support in Afghanistan. Injured and ill soldiers will not be kept away from remembrance activities; in fact, they are rising to a physical testing of will and personal endurance. The Soldier On Afghanistan Relay is a six-day race taken on by ill and injured personnel, racing 228 km, as a symbolic representation of the resolve Canadians have to persevere over hardship. The relay also celebrates the strength of our Canadian Armed Forces and of their supportive communities. The relay goes from Trenton Ontario to Ottawa with a nal presentation of the baton, which contains a Canadian ag. The baton will be given to the Prime Minister and Chief of Defense at the end of the race, on May 9 on Parliament Hill. For more info and the courageous stories of the relay participants service and recoveries See www. soldieron.ca. Following the parade, a single gunshot will signal two minutes of national silence at 1:30 p.m. EDT. Memorial services will also occur in Calgary at Mewata Armory at 10 a.m. and CFB Sufeld at 10:45a.m. There were 158 Canadian service personnel killed in the Afghanistan assignment and 48 Americans under Canadian command. One Canadian diplomat, one journalist and one civilian contractor were also killed. A memorial cenotaph with all their names was erected in Afghanistan. The Canadian government obtained permission to relocate it from the Kandahar aireld to Canada. The cenotaph will tour across Canada, allowing Canadians in different geographical regions to pay their respects and hold vigil on dates between May to October. The Calgary Tower will have the cenotaph on display from August 25-29. It will return to OtHeavily laden with their full kit, members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricas Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI) Battle Group march to the Chinook helicopters waiting to transport them into the mountains near Gardez in eastern Afghanistan for Operation ANACONDA, the Canadian Armys first combat mission since the Korean War. The 3 PPCLI Battle Group is deployed in Afghanistan on Operation APOLLO, Canadas military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism. The 3rd Battalion Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI) is based at Lancaster Park in CFB Edmonton.

TECHNOLOGY IS THE KEY And Aztec Real Estate Has It!

For a while now statistics have been telling us that over 90% of buyers are rst introduced to the property that they end up buying through the internet. Here at Aztec Real Estate Inc weve been actively pursuing marketing opportunities geared toward the internet. We do this to stay current with the ever changing trends in technology in order to be better equipped to serve our clients. Currently on our website visitors can search over 16000 (sixteen thousand) listings which encompass Strathmore, Calgary and surrounding areas, and if you need to nd a property outside of this area, well we can help you there as well. The great news is, we wont make you sign up or create an account to access this information, whether or not you want to create an account is entirely up to you! In todays real estate market it is essential for us to meet the Buyers and Sellers where they are, and, according to the statistics, that is the internet. Recognizing this we felt it imperative to invest a portion of our marketing dollar into hiring an IT team. The sole objective of this team is to go through our website on a regular basis throughout the month to ne tune our content along with continually updating our Search Engine Optimization (SEO) so that our site will continually have strong positioning on the internet in particular on the major internet search engines. In short, were easy to nd! With this new team our Sellers will be assured that their home will be marketed on our site with an emphasis on promoting their home in all of the internet search engines as well. Each listing we take is analyzed by our IT team in order to create and maintain the SEO best suited to that particular property so that our clients receive the best possible exposure on the internet in the areas the Buyers are looking. The trafc we are experiencing on our website as a result of this investment has increased exponentially. So much so that we have brought on another team to greet our website visitors and help both Buyers and Sellers alike with things like navigating our website, setting up searches, or getting a hold of a member of our Aztec Real Estate Inc team. This live chat feature can be accessed one of two ways. A visitor to our website can choose to engage this feature by clicking on the live chat button on any page in our site which will generate a chat box with someone there to help them. Or after spending some time on our site the chat box will open and one of the representatives will ask our visitor if there is any way they can help. With the amount of trafc we are experiencing on our site, we felt it was only right to make sure that each of our visitors are not only welcomed, but supported. Another staggering stat I found very interesting; 75% of all smart phone users are using their phone for their internet use and are no longer using their computer. It goes on to say that the average user will look at their phone for one reason or another 150 times per day. Thats just the average! It makes sense, but still I found this stat astounding. With this in mind, and knowing that it is so vital for us to stay on top of the trending technology out there, we hired another company to design a smart phone app for us. This web based app is a very powerful real estate search tool and best of all its free! Once downloaded the user can search for homes by map, by house number, MLS number, or by a radius search that will pull up all the listings near your phones location. They will have the ability to set up searches, input specic search criteria such as number of bedrooms, and style etc. They can then save their favorites, share their favorites with others and the list goes on. Imagine seeing a house that you like and being able to pull up all the information on it from your smart phone in the comfort of your vehicle. No more having to worry if it is raining, snowing or just downright miserable out. No more need to run out and grab a feature sheet off the sign post or tune your radio to a specic station, or get to your home computer to get the details. By the click of a button you will be able to see all the pictures of the home, read all the details, use the mortgage calculator to gure out monthly payment, request more information from one of our Asso-

ciates or even book a showing on that home, all from our app that you installed on your phone! This app was designed by people who deal specically in real estate and they know their stuff! As a result I think the end user will really appreciate what it has to offer. To give it a try just text AZTEC to 65656, you will receive a text back with a link to the app, save it to your smart phone home screen and you are set to go! If you need help setting it up or using it, just give us a call, we would be more than happy to help you. Its free, its powerful, and, when you are ready, at the click of a button you will have access to a member of our Aztec Real Estate team! The internet has given us great opportunities to better serve you. It has broken down the barriers of information that, at one time, only large franchise brokerages had, and has leveled the playing eld. The internet is everywhere, everyone has the opportunity to access it, and companies, like Aztec Real Estate Inc., are embracing it to the benet of our clients. Give us a call and let us show you what we can do for you.

Aztec Real Estate Inc. No gimmicks, no pressure, just sound advice coupled with a solid marketing plan and a fantastic team of highly trained real estate professionals who genuinely want to help.

Looking for positive results

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The implementation plan for the Wheatland County re service review will come to council on May 20. Residents should be aware that they can review documents released to council the Thursday before the meeting. The plan will be on the county website www.wheatlandcounty.ca for public review, prior to the meeting. Comments received from the public in writing, forwarded to council for their consideration, will also be posted on the website. There were ve options proposed and council will decide on what action it will take. At this level, there will be no further consultations with the public, as there have been extensive meetings with association members, re department staff, municipal leaders and county representatives. Chief Administrative Ofcer (CAO) Alan Parkin did not know what recommendations council would choose. I dont know it is not my job to do that and it is why I suggested we hire a consultant. I cant say that we will remain with the status quo. The review has been accepted by council and that is what we have to use moving forward, said Parkin. He qualied, however, that any struggling or failed associations will have their governance reviewed, to ensure that quality re service can be delivered to the areas residents. Parkin said historically reviews have led to forming a commission, or adapted an advisory board structure, run by the local municipality and the advisory board. In the re review, there is an option for the county to take over administration and supervision of re services. If you look at the City of Calgary, it runs the re service, but their advisory board has a re commission, and the same for their police service, and they are very valuable assets to the operation of the service, said Parkin. There may not be one model that works for everything in this county. Associations may not be the way to go for the future; it may be a mix of advisory boards or commissions. It may need to be individualized or customized to t the circumstances in each area. Parkin said he did not agree with the county taking over all the associations and setting up a commission; as some of the associations within the county are doing just ne. He did say though that some associations like Strathmore Rural and Carseland, and possibly Gleichen were struggling, so looking at governance issues for those areas is imminent. Two or three of the other associations have also come to us saying, our association is working good for now, but we see in two to four years that people who have contributed many years might be gone and we dont have anyone interested in replacing them, said Parkin. I have said to council that there shouldnt be any reason why we cant look at governance models as the need arises. Dalum re chief Albert Jensen said to his knowledge it will be business as usual for their re services, but said it was common knowledge in the re community that some of the other halls were struggling. He said that members of their association are open to working with the county to help other associations, providing tips on what has worked in their community. There have been so many meetings on all of this and it has been stretching us thin, said Jensen. We need to get things resolved, so we all can get back to business. Treasurer for the Carseland Fire Association, Tina Scott, said if the county takes over and goes to an advisory council, she would serve out her term, but then give notice, as she felt serving on such a committee would not hold much weight in decision-making process. At a public meeting held in Carseland on April 28, Parkin asked if any community members would be interested in sitting on an advisory board. It surprised me that the community said they werent interested in participating on an advisory board, said Parkin. I dont understand that, but maybe they misunderstood the role it would have. It is a tremendous opportunity. Parkin said the role of the advisory board would be advising council about community issues and acting as liaison with the community. Parkin said this type of committee generally has a fair amount of impact on decisions made. There are fears in the community that funds raised and equipment paid for will be absorbed by the county and redirected. Parkin said existing equipment will remain in the re halls and any nancial issues arising from governance changes will be reviewed, with recommendations and suggestions for management brought to council before actions are taken. Consultant Kenneth Kendall will be bringing the rural governance recommendations for Strathmore Rural and Carseland areas to council about June 3. Kendall has over a decade of experience in county administration and has also worked with the provinces Municipal Affairs department on many issues. He has been a volunteer re ghter for 17 years, and is now in the re consultation business and has done reviews for other counties. Parkin said Kendall has done a number of these types of reviews, with re associations in other counties. Parkin said Kendall is aware of the unique nature of Wheatland Countys current re structure. Parkin said anyone having concerns, should discuss them with their re service representative, submit them in writing to the county, or phone him at the county (403) 934- 3321, and he can direct them to Kendall as well. To date they have received no calls from the public. The governance report will be discussed in camera due to legal and condentiality issues that are involved.

Reection on a job well done

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor On May 9, Canadians are asked to reect on the contributions our Canadian soldiers made in the war in Afghanistan. Mixed political opinions are on social media sites, but many Canadians express support for the soldiers and the values they ght to uphold. Major Graham Longhurst is a reservist in the 41st Calgary Brigade, who was deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. He was tasked to train Afghan National Army (ANA) members to protect and rebuild their country. With boots on the ground and eyes on the target, he said change is slow, but Canadas relationship building exercises are worthwhile; creating the pathways the Afghans will use to achieve a freer more secure country in the future. After deploying on three different missions - one to Bosnia, Sudan and Afghanistan - I feel we are so fortunate to live in the society created in North America. Many do not realize how fortunate, until you see some of the simple freedoms we take for granted are taken away; and one lives in fear, or has to struggle day to day to simply survive, said Longhurst. In Afghanistan, the Canadians were in charge of a 14 nation team that was designed to mentor members of the ANA, who ran the Kabul military training centre. Longhurst and his team worked 12-14 hour days making sure there was support and supplies available, ensuring relationships with the Afghan people remained intact, taking over where the United States (US) efforts left off. Daily duties included training basic recruits and their leaders, teaching specialties like language, reading and computer systems, locating and distributing supplies and providing logistical support for the NATO allied teams involved in mentorships. They would work with interpreters, but often the translations took time, as they left out a lot of the details and nuances. I established a great relationship with my interpreter, learning a lot about life and family in Afghanistan. I learned about people and a way of life that was very focused on family and extended family, which is something I think we have moved away from in North America, said Longhurst. He was an amazing and honourable person, putting his life on the line every day to help us help the Afghan people. The interpreters lives were always in danger, and they would often change their names to protect their families from being targeted by the Taliban. Longhurst reported to the Logistics Colonel, whose role was to oversee trainers and trainees in the ANA. Longhurst said just feeding and clothing up to 12,000 new recruits was a big challenge. The US was contracted to leave supplies and support, but took it all with them when they left the area; so the Canadians had to creatively locate other resources from area organizations when necessary. It became more difcult, when Canadian supply lines were tightened, to ensure Canadian resources were going to Canadian allocations. The assignment was not without danger. Longhurst said Taliban always tried to inltrate new recruitments. They found pop bottles lled with poison, smuggled into the kitchen. They were detected by one of the Afghan police,

right before the poison was slipped into food. Improvised devices detonated, killing those planting them in the road, and bombs were found in vehicles. A Canadian soldier was killed, when the armoured bus they used to transport soldiers around the city was blown up in a collision with a vehicle packed with explosives. One American member had been lured off-base, to be discovered dead in a cave. Riots and anti-government protests often occurred outside the training camp, but no NATO members were engaged. Mentors could be killed or injured by those they were working with, but thankfully no Canadians were ever targeted. Longhurst said many soldiers had high expectations of swift change coming in, but soon learned that change is a slow process and small victories needed celebration. It becomes important for us as Canadian soldiers to focus in on the little things. The down side to that is we dont often see the positive effects of the little things we did. It could end up making a signicant difference down the road and occur after we had already left, said Longhurst. He said he did see Afghan perspectives shift, as they learned to do their own problem solving and the people began to make their views heard, speaking out about government corruption. This shift in attitude, and the ANA taking responsibility for coming up with solutions, was the most positive and potentially long lasting change that we were able to help facilitate. Under the previous Soviet system, the Army would not do anything unless told to do so by their commanders. There was no reward for initiative and they were often punished for attempting to take initiative. The Afghans themselves are very guarded in expressing their views, due

to the fact that they have spent nearly a generation under repressive regimes. Just expressing themselves could cause injury or death, if they expressed counter opinions to those in power, .said Longhurst. I did see some optimism in the potential for a future for the country. The ANA was truly the only unifying organization in the country that treated all who joined the same and did not discriminate on the basis of family, clan, or region of the country the person came from. Longhurst agreed that these efforts sometimes took a toll. It is certainly a struggle for our families when we deploy it usually means we are away from home for a year or more, said Longhurst. The struggle is that the partner is not there during that time to share life and parent responsibilities. There are also the possibilities of having to deal with physical and emotional scars, based on each individuals experiences. Longhurst said the support of Canadians back home is crucial. The one big factor, making a significant difference for us, is the support we get from the Canadian people back home. In my 23 years of service, it has not always been that way, said Longhurst. They have been able to separate support for the Canadian soldier from government policy. While Canadians may not entirely agree with military interventions around the world they do realize that we the soldiers go where we are told and do our ultimate best to make those small differences, offering up the chance for people in different countries to have similar opportunities to what we have here in North America. SPORTS
The Strathmore Spartan boys soccer team have yet to play their first game, after cancellations on April 28, and May 5. However, this gives coaches Kevin Reilly, Travis Gorski, and Kaitrin McDonnell more time to practice with the boys especially the ones new to the sport.

Skills improving for Spartans

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Spartans boys soccer team have yet to play their rst game for Strathmore High School following postponed games on April 28 and May 5 but are still working on their fundamental skills. Some of these kids havent played, but some of them have some good skills and experience, coach Kevin Reilly said. Its starting from the basics, and working its way up. Its trying to get them to do it at speed, and do it right. Sometimes they think speed is better than doing it right. This is not only for the players, Reilly said, but also a big learning curve for their rookie keeper, as well. Still, hes very hopeful of his hardworking squad. To be honest, Ive coached a lot about 20 years of coaching soccer, and these kids are probably the most coachable kids Ive ever worked with. They have enough skill to know what you want them to do, but they dont have so much that they think they know it all. Co-coach Travis Gorski began the season with a week-long conditioning camp of getting the 19 players on the roster in shape. I run the kids through anything conditioning wise, he said. We want to bring the intensity and get ready to work hard. Reilly, Gorski, and fellow coach Kaitrin McDonnell will be working on ball control, passing, but also set plays. Tactics can be somewhat difcult with regards to different positions of the players both offensive and defensive, Reilly said. But they really want to learn. From three weeks ago when we started, theyve improved 300 per cent. Its nice to see, because its really noticeable.

Back to track
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore High School Spartans nished with 136 points overall at last years track and eld zones. With many returners, coaches Paul Sonsteby, Kyle Larson, and Dan MacDonald are hoping for a similar nish. We had a better year last year for sure, and we sent a lot of kids to provincials, Larson said, the relay coach. The ones that weve had out are the core group we had at provincials last year. Its good to have them back. Larson will be working on the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay, while Dan MacDonald works with the 100m, 200m, and 400m sprinters. Were hopeful again, Sonsteby said, who also coaches cross country. A lot of my kids from cross country have

Grade 10 Alex Kim (l-r) and Grade 11 Tamara Adamschek race to the finish line at Strathmore High Schools track practice on April 29. Counties will be hosted at the school on May 21, followed by zones in Calgary on May 27.

shown up for the distance events, and we won our zone in cross country, so Id like to think wed have some strong nishes, but its a completely different sport. Some long distance runners of the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m are also on the sprint team as well. Similar to last season, approximately 20 students will be participating including Grade 10 Maria Fanning, who went to provincials for cross country. She will be running all three distance events. Weve got some potential in the 10s, thats for sure, Sonsteby said. The group will be practicing twice a week to repeat or improve their seventh overall placing at zones last year. Strathmore High School will host counties on May 21, and travel to Calgary for zones on May 27.

Westmount Hockey Program

Lecavalier to Top 80 Camp

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmores Sarah Lecavalier will be going through the same format of tryouts she did last year for Team Albertas U18 womens team. The 16-yearold will be attending the invite-only Top 80 camp from May 8-11 in Spruce Grove. Team Alberta evaluates the entire province all year; Lecavalier stood out with her season on the Highwood Raiders of the AMMFHL; though she only had 17 points in 24 season games, Lecavalier was fth in league playoff scoring with 15 points in 12 post-season matchups. Im just trying to show them all of my assets my speed, strength, and shot, Lecavalier said. Multiple coaches of Team Alberta have told me, just keep shooting, and get as many shots off as you can. Some of the other Top 80 girls may have played with Lecavalier during November 2013s U18 National Championships. Lecavalier had one goal in the tournament. Now that Im a second year, I think I know what Im expected to do. I also know the level of hockey thats going to be played, she said. I learned a lot at the camps I was at last year; they really preached driving the net. I have to focus on what theyve been telling me from last year, because not much is going to change. Should Lecavalier be successful in Spruce Grove, the next step is Top 46 camp from July 8-13 in Camrose. Following that, Top 27 will be named in September, with nal cuts soon after. That team will compete in the 2015 Canada Winter Games from Feb. 14-20 in Prince George, British Columbia against other provinces. I feel good, Im excited. Hopefully itll be my rst full camp, Lecavalier said; she hurt her kidney last year, missing the majority of tryouts, but still made the team. I want to leave a good impression this time.

The Strathmore High School Spartans had a double victory over Springbank on April 30 at home, with the boys triumphing 55-10, and the girls prevailing 20-12. They look to have a similar finish against Chestermere on May 9.

Crowther Cougars pounce

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Crowther Memorial Junior High had representation in all grades 7, 8, and 9 in all categories singles, doubled, and mixed at bandminton zones on May 1 in Okotoks. The school had won zone banners from the previous two years, and nished with two bronzes this time around. They did very well. We sent 29 badminton players. It was a very good showing by our gang, Grade 7 coach Ivan Wright said. We had a number of other teams that did well, but didnt medal. In each category, theres about 18 competitive teams. So to win a bronze is very good. Grade 9 Jane Jacobs took home third in girls singles, while Grade 8s Geena Schramm and Tyler Strath earned third in mixed. Unfortunately for the junior high level, zones is as far as the competition goes; in high school, students can advance to provincials. Our kids do very well, Wright said. Were very happy with the result. Continued on Page 26

Springing over Springbank

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The boys and girls rugby squads of Strathmore High School will travel to Chestermere High School on May 9 for their next regular season games. This comes after both teams defeated Springbank High School at home on April 30; a 55-10 victory the boys, and a 20-12 victory for the girls. It went very well, boys coach Brad Steele said. They handled the ball well thats something we were trying to improve on from our last game that we played in the snow. So they made nice passes and they were aggressive. Steeles rookies have learned a lot from watching the teams veterans, but still see some action as well. Every body gets in the game, but not always the same amount of time, Steele said. As for the battle against Chestermere, Steele knows they will be up against a lot of size and strength. If we handle the ball, well do okay and if we keep possession. We have a good group of players. We just cant make errors, he said. Jerry Flaws, girls coach, believes his ladies still have a lot to work on after the win over Springbank, but are starting to understand the sport. Weve just got to work on our defensive system and get organized, Flaws said. Also, maintaining ball control every time

Aryssah Stankevitsch Photos

theres a breakdown or a tackle, maintaining possession. Weve turned it over a few times, and you cant do that. The girls also traveled to Vulcan on May 2 for a tournament game, dropping 17-5. I think by the end of the year, well beat them. It was a close game, well played, but we just missed a couple of tackles and they scored, Flaws said. Their young players have an advantage. They play three years junior high and high school. Our new players are brand new. Following the game against Vulcan, the Strathmore High School girls shut out Eagle Butte High School in another tournament game 38-0. The girls were scheduled to have two more matches, but were snowed out.

Strathmore High School

Spartans move to Category 1

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Six Spartans from Strathmore High School traveled to badminton provincials in Lethbridge from May 2-3, and did not disappoint. We saw some improvement from last year, even though our points totals were down. Badmintons an interesting sport, coach Kenton Zandee said. The Spartans won two bronzes last season at provincials but in Category 2. This year, the team qualied for the top Category 1 level. Jaden Smith and Jessica Murphy nished seventh in their respective singles events, but had won those Category 2 bronzes last season. Shayla Pollock earned thirteenth overall in the province, while the doubles team of Jared Dougan and Reid Muenchrath placed sixth. The top nisher was Lauren Zandee fth in Alberta. For some of them, it was their rst provincials. Their nerves were there at times I think next year theyll be much more condent, and have better results, coach Zandee said. I was happy, I think they showed improvement. It doesnt look like it, since last year we had two kids medal but that was in Category 2. Jessica Murphy will be the only provincials player graduating and leaving the team. Everyone else should be looking good again for next year, I hope, Zandee said. Zandee was unsure of the teams he and the Spartans would compete against in Lethbridge, although a few had attended the same tournaments. Most of them came out of Calgary and Edmonton, and these are the kids that play club, or for academies. Its the one sport that they do, and they probably play six or seven days a week, Zandee said. To lose to those kids is not a shame. The reality is some of those kids are that much better than ours, because they do it all year long.

Venom bitten
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Three games into their lacrosse season, and the Junior B Tier 2 Strathmore Venom are still searching for their rst victory. Their year began on April 26, with a 10-8 loss against the Lethbridge Barracudas. At one point, the Venom were leading by three. With less than ten minutes to go, the Barracudas scored to tie it. They scored the game winner eight minutes later, and the insurance marker with seven seconds remaining. Brady Morris, Logan Sept, and Logan Spooner had three points each in the loss. That was our rst game of the season, and we have a few new players on the team learning the systems, and the line changes. We were pretty rusty for the rst period or two, said coach Hal Morris. Roughly half of his 20-man roster are new to the team, some of whom Morris coached at the midget level. Strathmore also ran into penalty trouble against Lethbridge, losing two players who were assessed ve penalties the limit before being ejected. Its just discipline control and stick control. Unfortunately we were short-manned, left with 12 runners, Morris said. We sort of ran out of gas by the third period. We just broke down defensively. After that game, that was a big focus for practice. Working on better positioning and basically just being at the right spots at the right time. However, the Venoms next game was a similar case against the Calgary Axemen. Though the score was tied at the end of the rst period, and a 4-point effort from Brady Morris, Strathmore dropped the game 11-6. Two days later against the Medicine Hat Sun Devils, Brady Morris again scored two, but it wasnt enough the Venom lost 11-4. The ironic thing is, the rst three games weve had, theyre the best three teams in the league. Lethbridge and Medicine Hat historically have always been really good, Morris said. All three games were win-able by us. Our problem has been the third period. The Venom switched divisions this year, moving from North to South, giving them exposure to teams theyre unfamiliar with. Their next game is against Okotoks on May 10. We dont know Okotoks very well, we only played them once last year, Morris said. Theyve always been a pretty good team, but I think theyre also comparable to us, as far as skill. The thing were really going to focus on for this game is playing three full periods.

Apex to open
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter A family-friendly training environment is being brought to Strathmore by Apex MMA Gym, who, upon their planned opening date of May 31, will be running classes and personal training for kickboxing, muay thai, jiu jitsu, and judo. Founders Justin Schmit and Lisa Garriot truly wish for everyone to get out of their comfort zone, and promote healthy living at all ages. We really want it to be a family atmosphere, Garriot said. We really want to focus a lot of attention to kids, Schmit said. The pair believes that working on self-condence and tness assist in anti-bullying. They plan on running camps for youth in the summer, where parents can drop off their kids, and can also come in for boot camps themselves especially moms who may be uncomfortable working out in front of others. Everybody is on the same team and everybody should feel welcome here, Garriot said. The gym will be located on the corner of Brent Boulevard and Strathaven Drive, and will offer everything from Mixed Martial Arts-style training to military boot camps. Right from the basic one-two combinations to advanced jujitsu, and just a variety of things, Schmit said. This town has just shown such a huge interest, Garriot said. MMA is the fastest growing sport. We can really pull in from all the communities. Schmit, an MMA ghter himself, has wanted to complete this project for a while, as there are not many MMA opportunities in Strathmore. He had originally thought to take his skills and teach out of the house, but the interest exploded. Teaching makes you that much better of a competitor because you have to slow things down and go back to basics, Schmit said, for his own career. Garriot a yoga teacher and Schmit, will instruct along with three other teachers, many of whom Schmit knows through the MMA industry.

Cougars shine
Continued from Page 25 Wright saw a huge improvement throughout the year with his young players; at county nals, every Grade 7 team except for one was from Crowther. Between the Phys. Ed teachers and working after school, they came lightyears in terms of their skill, Wright said. The future looks bright for other badminton zone banners, as the sport is so popular, the school is now to be divided into a playoff to see who will get the chance to compete at counties. Over 50 Grade 7 students tried out for the team, with other grades having similar numbers. Our Grade 7s did really well in terms of representation, Wright said. The Grade 8s and Grade 9s, theyve played before, but for the Grade 7s, its quite a big jump having to learn the game and compete.
