Questionnaire - Graph Analysis

This pie chart shows us the number of each respective gender that was a participant
in our questionnaire. As shown by the results we tried to roughly obtain a 50/50
spread of both Male and Female respondents, as we felt that this would give us
more durable and accurate feedback. Another reason as to why we believed asking
mix of both genders was due to the fact that our project is in the Pop genre, where
there is a large demographic of males/females that have interest in the Pop genre.
Therefore there is no real dominant gender within the pop genre and our sub genre
of Indie/Pop and we should as a result question/get feedback equally from both
genders as our project should be fully engaging to the audience and fans of the
genre regardless of gender.

This graph shows us the approximate age of who took part in our questionnaire.
During the process of deciding as to what would be the best age range to
predominantly question, we felt that the demographic of our viewers age was
situated between 16 - 32 years of age, however this knowledge was based on
current trends and stereotypes. As a result we would expect to receive a large
majority of viewers within the age range of 16 - 32, with a smaller proportions of our
audience built up from outside this age range (<16 and >32). Therefore, when
distributing our questionnaire we felt that targeting our target audience would give
us the best results. Conclusively we obtained accurate information and statistics to
aid our main project, along with its coinciding ancillary productions (Digipack &
Magazine advert).

This set of data informs us of what radio stations, respondents of our questionnaire
listen to. As shown the data obtained seems to be rather sporadic, which could be
seen as evidence in defending suggestions that there is no sole/single radio station in
the music industry in general that could be seen as a dominant force. The most
popular radio station that was collected from the questionnaire was Capital FM,
which was followed respectively by Kiss 100, Choice FM, Magic, Kerrang, Radio 1 and
Heart. However in terms of current trends the results we received was relatively
expected considering the general build up of our respondents. Overall this data
backs up our decision to enter the Pop/Indie/Rock genre, as this seems to be more
favoured by viewers within our target audience.

This graph gives us an indication of what our sample group believes is their favourite
and least favourite genre of music. Therefore giving us the clarity to see what our
target audience believe is their favourite/least favourite genre, thus producing our
music video and apply it's the genre conventions correctly and effectively.
After having a brief look at the graph, the results suggest that within our specific
demographic there seems to be a clear - newly found interest towards the ever
expanding, popular and modernised genres of R&B, Hip-hop, Rock and Indie. This
may be due to the sudden rise of many musical talents (E.g. Justin Bieber, Michael
Buble, Robin Thicke and many others) that have attracted worldwide attention and
taken the industry by storm in their respective genres. Furthermore, A deeper look
at the data shows a correlation between popular genres and their corresponding
radio stations. Radio stations such as Capital FM, KISS 100 and Choice which are all
well renowned as R&B, Hip-Hop and Pop/Rock genre playing stations, appeared at
the top end of our poll as most favourable. Another possible reason for this maybe
due to the amount of exposure that is available and utilised by artists in the genre
by various services e.g. YouTube, Mobile applications etc. Where as some of the
slightly unfavoured genres e.g. Classical and Dubstep have found difficulty in
exposing their content to the masses, as a result only handful of artists in the
respective genre have managed to make themselves a large player in the genre e.g.
Skrillex, Chase and Status etc.
However more exposure to the industry will make the market more competitive and
intense in terms of audiences/potential audiences.
Nevertheless this set of data defends our selection of our chosen song, as it contains
elements of Rock, Pop/Rock and R&B, therefore ensuring that the Music Video +
ancillaries will satisfy fans of the genres.

Over recent years we have seen monumental advancements of technology within a
variety of media productions. One of those changes has seen a significant
improvement of music videos and their importance. Music videos are important for
the producers and artist as it allows them to, along with lyrics of the song, physically
demonstrate the meaning or story behind the music. Another reason that the
popularity of music videos may have increased in recent times is due to its uses as a
marketing device which could potentially promote and boost the sales of the music
recording. This is done predominantly through pre-releases and extra/bonus
footage. Overall, the data we received strongly suggests that we will need to spend
quality time on making our music video to a quality standard as a good music video
only benefits a song.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As well as listening to an artist's music, do
you watch the corresponding music video?
Yes
No

This data shows what medium people who have stated previously 'to watch music
videos' view/obtain the music videos from. A quick glance at the data shows that
90% of our respondents have said that they generally view music videos on the
internet. Delving back to the early 2000's where technology such as web 2.0 where
on the verge of stimulation, TV station would have been the source of music videos,
old and new. However this contrast's heavily with our data as internet based sites
such as YouTube, Vimeo and Vevo etc, have managed to take the industry by storm
as only 10% of our sample group are still believed to watch music videos through TV.
However, consumers are not the only ones to have benefited from the growth of the
music industry via online services as producers and artist's now revert to online
releases/advertisement on YouTube etc as a priority. YouTube has been allowed to
indirectly take the music industry away from TV stations such as MTV and KISS 100,
this is mainly due to:
More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month
Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube that's
almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year
100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
YouTube is localised in 56 countries and across 61 languages
According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults aged 18-34 than any
cable network
Millions of subscriptions happen each day, and the number of people
subscribing has more than doubled since last year
Statistics like these are un parallel and cannot be met by any other medium,
hence the success of Internet based viewing in this specific case of technical
convergence. Conclusively, the expansion of internet has been beneficial for
both parties as consumers gain a huge library of music and their videos, as
producers have gained a fantastic method of distribution that can boost
ancillary sales through advertisements etc.

This graph shows the level of importance our sample group feel about the
correspondence of a music videos narrative and its song. As the graph shows, 70% of
our sample group believe that a strong link between the narrative and its music
video is very important, with 10% of the group stating that the relationship between
the two is 'not very' important and 'not at all' important. If there is a strong positive
link between the narrative and the lyrics, the viewing experience will be enhanced as
the viewer will be able to submerge the sense of sound and visual senses. A positive
correlation between the two allows a free flowing and smooth viewing experience,
this is important as it leads to a pulsating watch. We shall therefore ensure that we
do create a music video with a narrative as this was a popular outcome with our
sample group.

This set of data gives us an indication of what form of music video our respondents
would expect to see. With three available options, Narrative, Half Performance/Half
Narrative ad Performance based. The results we obtained showed a clear disinterest
towards a fully performance based video, which may be considered as
unconventional to the genre, although this method has been used to great effect by
Daft Punk in their hit single 'Get Lucky'. However, conventionally in the genre you
would expect to see either a fully narrative or half narrative/half performance based
video, this ideology was supported by our results as all selections were placed were
placed on the former, where as no selections were made for a fully performance
based video. Nevertheless as a group we feel that the best method of filming will be
to make use of the half performance/half narrative based method as this gives the
availability to explore, exploit and benefit from both forms. When creating our video
we attempt to make the narrative engaging, as an engaging narrative can vastly
improve the viewing experience as it allows the audience to interact and envisage
the meaning of the video. The performance based aspect of the video allows us to
show the artists playing there instruments in between a section of the narrative, this
allows us to keep the music video fresh, appealing and enjoyable.
However, we must do this by keeping in tandem with lyrics so that there is a clear
link between visuals and sounds.

What type of music video would you
expect to see for a song in the rock genre?

In order to make our music video successful we have to take a lot of information into
consideration. However, one aspect of filming that must be utilised correctly is the
use of a wide range of camera shots/angles; this is shown clearly by the sporadic
spread of data regarding what camera shots/angles our sample group believe we
should implement into the filming process of our project. From the data we can see
that the most favourable shot/angle is the close-up shot, this shot will be used in our
production as it allows us to project the actors/actresses emotion/facial expression
to the audience, this technique could be used hand in hand with narrative to help set
the tone/mood of a scene. Another popular camera shot as voted by our sample
group was the use of long shots. Long shots can be used for greatest effect when the
director wants to present information regarding the setting and location to the
viewer in order to literally gain the wider picture of the scene in question. Overall, in
our video we try and effectively use as many various camera angles/shots if both
possible and viable as this manages to always keep the viewer engaged and
interested throughout the piece. Regarding the less favourable choices, we will still
take them into account as they may have a role within our project and we will have
to identify what camera angle/shot is best fir for the scene.

Lighting, like camerawork is vitally important in terms of exploiting the mood and
sanctity of an area/prop/actor/actress to the audience. The use of lighting allows us
to easily manipulate a scene to our advantage to make the viewer to experience a
mood that we indirectly make them to feel. The response we received regarding
lighting was positive, albeit rather wide spread. However, this can be twisted into a
benefit as an array of different lighting throughout the music video allows us create
a good mixture of emotions, one of the themes we are trying to portray in our
narrative. All the various forms of lighting motioned above is likely to be used within
our work as if it used correctly it can help enhance the viewing experience an make a
better end product. Conclusively, we will attempt to use broad range of lighting in
order to create certain moods/emotion in between scene so that we can be
successful in ensuring the audience experience a variety of filming techniques and
enjoy our music video. (gratification theory)

This graph show us how many of our sample group would like to see a picture of the
band on the Digipack. The results shows that the large majority would like to see the
band members of the Digipack with 70% saying 'yes'. This result was expected as the
band members are usually portrayed on the Digipack at some stage. We intend to
use the band members for the front and back covers of our Digipack as these are the
areas were we expect to get the most viewings. Therefore having a picture of the
band makes the album more recognisable and personal from a fans point of view.

Would you expect a picture of the band on
a digipack?
Yes
No

This set of data shows that our respondents feel that if there is a picture of the band
members it should medium sized in proportion to the rest of the Digipack. The
results clearly suggest that we should not consider using a small picture; this is rarely
seen on many albums in the genre, as the picture would have to be extremely
distinctive for it to stand out from a crowd. Therefore for this reason I believe that a
medium sized picture will be most suitable for our production.

This graph gives us information on what size typography our sample group would
expect to be used on our Digipack. The results show an almost 50/50 divide between
a large sized typography and a medium sized typography. As a group we believe that
the size would be medium sized typography, this is because our picture of the band
may be bordering between medium and large. Therefore, a medium sized font will
allow fitting in all the contents needed without compromising to much of our
Digipack real estate. Therefore by having a large sized font, we may run the risk of
making our Digipack looking blocky, chaotic and cluttered which gives a bad
impression for first time and existing viewers.

This graph shows us how many of our respondents feel in regards to the location of
the main titles on the cover. As shown, the most favourable location of our titles, is
centrally and top. This is generally where you would except to see a main title as the
viewer will tend to observe the cover from up to down, hence the title will catch the
viewers eye and attention. However, having the title placed centrally towards the
bottom of the cover was also adorned by our sample group, this to works well as it
can allow concentration and potential impression to be fully made on the image in
use. However we shall try to use both locations effectively for both main titles in
order to create a clean, professional look. We will do this by placing the band name
(top, centrally) and then placing the album name (bottom, centrally).

This set of data shows what level of importance our sample place in regards to how
the Digipack represents the genre. The choice seems rather unanimous as 100% of
respondent believe the Digipack should be representative of its genre. We as a group
believe that this is important too as a strong link between the Digipack and is genre,
helps the viewer indentify what sort of music to expect and allows them to easily
distinguish between what genre an album is likely to be in purely due to its Digipack.
Due to the high demand by our sample group, we make a strong link between our
digipack and the genre so we can see the beneficiary elements.

This graph clearly shows that our sample believe that we should relate our magazine
advert to our digipack. We as a group agree with this as having a strong link between
the magazine print and the digipack creates a robust brand/brand image, this allows
a better flow in regards to marketing of our product as we will be selling one brand,
rather than many separate projects etc.

Should the digipack relate to the magazine

No

This set of data shows us what our sample believe is the best colour scheme for
Digipack/advert to have. The results are relatively sporadic, however there seem to
be some favourites such as the red and black and that we use the same colours as
used in our video. This is once again another convention that helps stimulate our
project as a brand, in such sense that the advert, Digipack and music video become a
unit.

This graph tells us information on what magazines are sample believe would be most
effective to home our advert. Kerrang had obtained the most votes; this may be due
to the scale of the business and it huge awareness within the industry. I feel Kerrang
is the best magazine to reside our magazine print as it had a large fan base including
our target group (males aged 16+), therefore as the magazine is based specifically on
the rock/indie genre we will be allowing the advert to reach full exposure that would
be classed as effective. However we may consider other magazines as prints such as
Q allow reaching a wider audience who may not completely be within our target
audience.

This graph shows us data on what the size of our magazine print should be as chosen
by respondent to the questionnaire. As expected, a large majority of our sample
group had chosen the full page option, with half page following and less than half a
page receiving no votes. We as a group feel that the use of full page advert is the
best option for our advert as it allows working space, in which we can produce our
advert to be more appealing to the eye and attractive. However with a half page
advert, we maybe limiting our choices as we me end up cramming more content into

This graph show data regarding whether are sample group believe that we should
prioritise text or picture in our advert. I believe that in our advert, there should be an
equal proportion of text and pictures; this would be suggested otherwise in
comparison to the data. I believe this because if purely pictures were used for our
band, they do not yet have recognition/brand awareness to be immediately
identified by a photo, where a balance of text good give a brief background to the
band.
