A (ALS) is the nerve degeneration
disease that is most often referred
to by the name of its most famous
victim—Lou Gehrig. It’s rare and very
deadly, and it has recently been connected as
a possible side effect of taking of statin
drugs.* This latest news emerged from
mountains of computerized statistics
wherein the numbers of statin drug takers
and the numbers of adverse events showed
ALS cases far beyond so-called norms.
Ralph Edwards, director of the World
Health Organization’s drug monitoring cen-
ter, and Dr. Ana Szarfman of the FDA both
noted the number of ALS cases listed
among those known to be taking statins was
“much higher than expected.” We are told
that this fact created a “dilemma.”
According to the July 3, 2007 Wall
Street Journal: “[H]eart attacks are a lead-
ing cause of death, and statins claim to have
helped millions of people reduce their heart
risk.” However, the presumption that statins
save millions of lives is not at all well doc-
umented. In fact, it has been challenged
more than once in the peer-reviewed litera-
ture. Upon closer examination, statins have
only one well-documented value—the huge
amounts of money flowing into drug com-
pany coffers. ♥

*I oppose taking statins because they are not necessary
for two reasons. First the cholesterol-causes-heart-disease
thesis is mostly bunk, and secondly a dietary supplement
does a better job of lowering LDL cholesterol and triglyc-
erides and in bolstering HDL cholesterol at the same time,
with only beneficial side effects—it’s called pantethine.

Cutting Health Care Costs
Ought to Be Easy, Right?

B
etter healthcare at lower cost should be easy.
Introducing unused advances in medical sci-
ence made during the 20th century into the
art of medicine would be a big step. A gov-
ernment-sponsored medical monopoly
stands in the way. It denies freedom of choice in medical
care. It has discouraged the introduction of many advances
in medical science. Adoption of suppressed technologies,
already proven to be practical and useful, could substan-
tially reduce the $2.1 trillion in annual health care expen-
ditures.
Dr. Julian Whitaker, in his August 2007 newsletter
Health and Healing, reveals that $24 billion could be
saved over the next 5 years, just from targeted use of a few
nutritional supplements, according to a recent report based
on a review of the medical literature. Vitamin D and calci-
um can reduce hip fractures. Fish oil can reduce coronary
heart disease. Folic acid for expectant mothers can reduce
spina bifida and other neural tube defects in their babies.
Leutein and zeaxanthin can reduce macular degeneration.
The recent discovery that vitamin D is able to turn on a
gene which energizes our immune systems, when taken in
large enough quantities, should open the way for addition-
al savings. The combination of vitamin D and vitamin C,
one of the few antiviral substances, could have a substan-
tial effect on the incidence of many diseases if used judi-
ciously. Influenza, for example, could cease to be a prob-
lem: no vaccines needed.
Daniel Haley, in his book Politics in Healing devotes a
chapter to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). If the FDA were to
withdraw its unscientific objections to the use of this mate-
rial, which The New York Times called the closest thing to
a wonder drug on April 3, 1963, the cost of dealing with
strokes and spinal cord injuries would drop – probably pre-
cipitously. Christopher Reeve might never have been para-
lyzed if he had received DMSO intravenously after his
injury. Dr. Stanley Jacobs demonstrated its capabilities by
using it to help paralyzed paraplegics regain use of their
limbs. In 1980, then-Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-Ore.) attempt-
ed to interest Sen. Ted Kennedy’s sub-committee on health
in making DMSO available to the people without success.
More savings would result if intravenous vitamin C
therapy (IVC) were made available for a multiplicity of
diseases. Ascorbic acid, vitamin C, has been mischaracter-
ized. It is not just a cure for scurvy, it is much more. In the
form of ascorbates, it is really a liver metabolite which the
body would use for many purposes if our ancestors hadn’t
lost the capability of making it internally about 20 million
years ago.
As noted in Cancer and Vitamin C by Cameron and
Pauling, ascorbate infusions were used for years in
Scotland to improve the quality of life of cancer patients
and reduce their needs for opiates to ease pain. They can
improve quality of lives of cancer patients receiving
chemotherapy and kill cancer cells, too. Dr. Frederick
Klenner, BS, MS, MD found that IVCs were useful across
the board in his medical practice. They not only ensured
the production of healthy babies, quickly countered the
toxins of poisonous insects and snakes, but were even able
to cure his polio patients, some of whom were paralyzed.
Unfortunately they are not readily available.
Chelation therapy for cardiovascular disease and
removal of toxic metals can reduce costs. It is an effective
competitor for open heart surgery. Its cost of $5,000 com-
pares favorably with the $50,000 price of the surgery. Very
few people are damaged by chelation, but many are injured
or killed by surgery. Ten years ago two physicians were
providing this service in my area. They were forced to
cease.
Low-dose whole body radiation, first tested in 1975 at
Harvard Medical School and, in recent years, in Japan, has
been approved by the FDA for use in treating lymphomas.
In a Japanese test, 84% of patients were still alive after 13
years.
Allowing insurance companies to control the practice
of medicine is not in the best interest of the people who
need medical care. Unfortunately that was happening in
Dr. Shealy’s time and it is continuing today. One of my
physician friends is not being paid for services rendered to
a patient because an insurance company doesn’t approve of
the therapy used. In the particular case I suspect that there
may be some collusion with the medical monopoly to dis-
courage use of the treatment provided. Considering the
fact that the practice of medicine is an art and not a sci-
ence, why should we believe that insurance company poli-
cies administered by their clerks will provide us with first
class medical services?
The medical monopoly’s foundations were laid more

than 100 years ago with a reorganization of
the American Medical Association (AMA).
This empowered a few politically savvy
physicians. The ringleader was the editor of
the Journal of the American Medical
Association (JAMA). The AMA’s Flexner
Report in 1910, judicious lobbying, politi-
cal contributions and the managed defeat
of political opponents resulted in laws
which gave the AMA control of medical
education, the practice of allopathic medicine and the
operation of hospitals. The advertising income of the
JAMA provided the wherewithal that made this possible.
Without doubt the pharmaceutical industry was a major
advertiser as it is today. Whether or not that industry
played a role in the political machinations which generat-
ed the organization of establishment medicine in this coun-
try is not easily determinable, but it certainly profits from
the result.
For many years allopathic physicians have been trained
to use approved therapies in accordance with what are
called “Standards of Care.” These are based on frequent
reviews of current practice by the majority of physicians.
The Standards of Care provide a defense against charges of
malpractice: “I did what everybody else does.” New thera-
pies, particularly if they produce better results with lower
costs to patients, become serious threats to those practic-
ing in accordance with the Standards of Care. Harry
Hoxey’s cancer treatments provide an example. The AMA
first attempted to buy control of his therapy and when this
was not possible it harassed him for years. Finally, after he
had successfully operated the largest cancer clinic in the
world in Texas for 20 years, the legislature there was
induced to pass a law which made it illegal for physicians
to work for non-physicians, and he was forced to close it.
His treatments cost $400 for lifetime care, and indigents
got them free. They are still available in Mexico for
$3,500, and indigents still get them free.
While wealthy Americans can seek alternatives to low
quality medical services in other countries, most people
are forced to take what they can get. We don’t have free-
dom of choice in health care and physicians are not trained
in many beneficial medical therapies.
In the April 2002 issue of Life Extension magazine,
William Faloon disclosed that his foundation has been
spearheading consumer protests about the monopolistic
advantages that pharmaceutical companies enjoy because
of FDA regulations and policies. Their approval require-
ments are so expensive that few companies can afford to
compete. As a result Americans pay the highest prices in
the world for their prescription medications.
Pharmaceuticals kill almost 200,000 people every year,
according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Why
should we accept this carnage and its exorbitant cost when
kinder, gentler and less expensive therapies lie within our
grasp? We have been deprived of freedom of choice in
healthcare for too long. It is time for a change.

U.S. Health Care Among World’s Worst

he United States has the most expensive
health care in the world and close to the
lowest quality according to the World
Health Organization. Health care costs
$2.1 trillion, $7,000 per person and 17% of
the gross national product each year.. It is bankrupting
individuals, businesses, and federal and state govern-
ments.
The cause is a plethora of laws crafted to empower a
medical monopoly which has successfully prevented
effective competition for almost 100 years. The 1910
Flexner report started the process and caused many
medical schools to close.
The American Medical Association initiated laws
which gave it control of medical schools, hospitals and
individual physicians, financing its activities with
advertising income generated by its Journal of the
American Medical Association. A substantial part of
this income was supplied by the pharmaceutical indus-
try. At present the industry also subsidizes its regulator,
the Food and Drug Administration, with millions of
dollars a year for drug testing and spends about $100
million a year on lobbyists and campaign contributions.

the margins are substantial. For example the active
ingredient of the well known drug Prozac, which
retailed for about $200 per 100 in 2003, actually cost 11
cents per 100.
The medical monopoly has prevented the general
use of a number of advancements in medical science.
Royal Raymond Rife’s ray machine, which years ago in
California was able to quickly cure terminal cancer
patients with three-minute exposures to its “blue light,”
was one of them. These machines were declared illegal
to use and confiscated out of physician’s offices by the
FDA because “experts,” who neither examined nor test-
ed the machines, decreed they couldn’t work. Daniel
Haley’s book Politics in Healing and my book
Suppressed Science provide other examples.
It is necessary to protect the public from those who
use dangerous medications, radiation and invasive pro-
cedures like surgery, the province of allopathic physi-
cians. They need to be licensed. But people should be
free to obtain healing services which are not so danger-
ous, from the competitors of these physicians. They
may not need to be licensed if the therapies they prac-
tice are not dangerous. Licensed physicians should also
be allowed to freely practice their art and not be limit-
ed by state medical boards to “approved therapies.”
Multimillion dollar double-blind, placebo-controlled
tests are required by the FDA before approval of new
therapies. But some drugs, like Vioxx, kill a lot of peo-
ple after they are found “safe and effective.” These tests
also provide an insurmountable hurdle to the introduc-
tion of any new therapy, however innocuous.
There are 45 million Americans who have no med-
ical insurance and have difficulty getting care. For
example, recently a part time student in Connecticut,

without health insurance, went to a hospital complain-
ing of difficulty walking. He was rushed through a
series of tests, a CAT SCAN and a blood transfusion
and presented with a bill for about $6,000 which he was
unable to pay. His efforts to obtain additional, needed
care were unsuccessful.
People with insurance cannot be assured of good
medical care because insurance company employees
are invading the province of medical professionals.
They exercise the power of the purse and often decide
that they will not pay for the medicines or the proce-
dures that physicians prescribe. A physician friend
recently prescribed a medication for a patient. The
patient’s insurance company refused to pay, suggesting
a different medication the physician considered inap-
propriate. The patient, over the objections of the physi-
cian, opted to take only the medication that would be
paid for by the insurance company.
The absence of competition has helped to create dis-
astrous conditions in the medical care industry. The
power exerted by the FDA, state medical review boards
and the AMA needs to be substantially diminished.
Old laws need to be discarded or revised and new
laws which permit constructive competition to enter the
medical market place need to be enacted. Insurance
companies must be confined to their proper function
and not allowed to engage in the practice of medicine
by using the power of the purse. There is a lot for
incumbent politicians to accomplish before the next
election. Judge their fitness by their response to this
challenge. ♥

We Need Much More Vitamin C
In Our Diets than We’re Getting
Studies on importance of Vitamin C ignored by mainstream

determined medical scientist spent
many years attempting to make the
medical establishment aware of the
importance of vitamin C. This sub-
stance, ascorbic acid, is present in our
bodies as compounds called ascorbates. His research
shows that we have within ourselves a remarkable sys-
tem for fighting stress, toxins and disease vectors.
Unfortunately, because we all have a genetic defect, it
lacks an internal source of the needed ammunition.
Frederick Klenner, BS, MS, MD, whose studious
works have been ignored for 60 years, called minimum
daily requirements for vitamin C an “illegitimate
child” co-fathered by the National Academy of Sci-
ence and the National Research Council. He said it
was a tragic error in judgment. It is a colossal blunder
that has been responsible for an enormous amount of
pain, disease, death and medical expense.
His article in the Journal of Nutrition (winter 1971)
notes that the demands of our bodies for vitamin C or
ascorbic acid go far beyond the scorbutic levels. He
quotes the Department of Agriculture’s 1939
Yearbook: “In fact even when there is not a single out-
ward symptom of trouble a person may be in a state of
vitamin C deficiency more dangerous than scurvy
itself. When such a condition is not detected, and con-
tinues uncorrected, the teeth and bones will be dam-
aged, and what may be even more serious, the blood
stream is weakened to the point where it can no longer
resist or fight infections not so easily cured as scurvy.”
Klenner’s list of factors affecting ascorbic acid

trauma; kidney threshold; stress; season of the year;
body chemistry; drugs; pesticides and body weight.
Thus, a sick old woman in an apartment in New York
can be expected to have different needs for ascorbic
acid than a healthy young man on a farm in Iowa.
The pathological syndromes of genetic diseases like
phenylketoneuria, galactosemia, and alkatoneuria,
which are all caused by the failure of inactive or defec-
tive genes to produce important enzymes, affect some
of us. But we all were born with hypoascorbemia, first
described and named by biochemist Irwin Stone. Our
inability to produce the liver enzyme l-gulonolactone
oxidase prevents us from making our own ascorbic
acid. Most animals including dogs, cats, rats, lions and
elephants are capable of internally satisfying their
needs for this essential substance. A few like the pri-
mates, a fruit-eating bat and guinea pig also lack this
ability.
Lack of ascorbic acid causes scurvy, which ravaged
crews of British naval vessels on long voyages. It
resulted in extensive bleeding and general deteriora-
tion of the body. Autopsies disclosed conditions of the
internal organs similar to those produced by cancer.
Klenner suggested that intravenous megadoses of vita-
min C, given in the form of sodium ascorbate, might
reverse the cancer process. Some physicians, accord-
ing to reports, have achieved positive results with this
therapy which should be, but is not, part of the
Standards of Care. The British found citrus fruits a
solution to scurvy.
The fact that demands for ascorbic acid are variable
is clearly indicated by the experimentally determined
ranges of production in animals capable of making

their own. Dr. Klenner mentions the rat, whose normal,
unstressed production, converted to the equivalent
needs of a 150 pound man, amount to between 1.8 and
4 grams per day. When stressed its equivalent produc-
tion increased to over 15 grams per day.
Applying this knowledge to the treatment of his
obstetrical patients, Klenner prescribed 4 to 15 grams
of ascorbic acid per day during gestation depending on
need. During the last trimester 20% of them took 15
grams per day. A booster injection of 10 grams (as
sodium ascorbate) was given to 80% of them on enter-
ing the hospital for delivery. The results were benefi-
cial to the patients: Women who had previously abort-
ed multiple times, did not abort; hemoglobin levels
were easier to maintain; Leg cramps affected less than
3% and were always associated with getting out of
vitamin C tablets; Labor was shorter and less painful;
No postpartum hemorrhages were encountered; No
patient required catheterization; Infants were all
robust. Nurses called them “Vitamin C babies.” ♥

Health Activist Says Simple Supplementation

n a recent letter to President Bush, William
Faloon, co-founder of the Life Extension Foun-
dation in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., stated that hun-

issue. They calculated the following benefits:

IU per day in their first year of life
• 33% reduction in type II diabetes in those taking
800 IU per day plus calcium
• 72% reduction of falls in the elderly taking higher
doses of D3
• 42% reduction in multiple sclerosis in women tak-
ing over 400 IU per day of D3

espite experiences linking prescribed drugs to
treat depression and other mental illnesses in
children to more depression, obesity and a
rise in suicides, the Food and Drug Admin-
istration is allowing more on the market.
The FDA has approved Risperdal, manufactured by
Janssen LP of Titusville, N.J. for the treatment of schiz-
ophrenia in children ages 13-17 and for short-term treat-
ment of bipolar disorder in ages 10-17.
Until now, there had been no FDA-approved drug for
the treatment of schizophrenia in children and only lithi-
um is approved for treatment of bipolar conditions in
children ages 12 and up.
Approximately 2.4 million American adults, or about
1.1 % of the population ages 18 and older in a given year
have schizophrenia, according to the National Institutes
of Health.
These drugs for mentally impaired children, known
as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are
supposed to maintain the brain chemical serotonin at
appropriate levels but they have a horrible history of cre-
ating mass murderers (AFP April 23-30, 2007).
Authorities believe Cho Seung-Hui had been taking
medication for depression before killing 32 people and
himself at Virginia Tech last April. If his drug use is con-
firmed, it will bring the total of known drug-induced
killings to 61 Americans. Before the mass killings at
Virginia Tech, at least 16 killers of school children used
these powerful psychotropic drugs, such as in the
Columbine High School killings in 1999. More than
44,000 adverse reports have been filed against Prozac,
citing 2,500 deaths—mostly from suicides. ♥

Surprising connection still puzzles scientists

differently than white people.
The studies date back to 1974, when Keh-Ming Lin
moved from Taiwan to Seattle to finish his training in
psychiatry. He was surprised to learn that the dosage
of anti-psychotic drugs given to schizophrenic
American patients was often 10 times higher than the
dose for Taiwanese patients with the same illness.
Determining the reasons for the differences
became a full-time research project for Dr. Lin, who
became associate professor of psychiatry at Harbor-
UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.
Dr. Lin is now a leading member of a group of sci-
entists who are trying to learn why race appears to be
an important factor in determining a patient’s sensitiv-
ity to the effects of medications.
It has been established that facial flushing is a char-
acteristic response to consuming alcohol in many
Asians. This is because the enzymes that metabolize
Asians and others may respond differently to other
drugs that affect the central nervous system.
Physicians on both sides of the Pacific agree that
sometimes there are dramatic differences in drug
dosage requirements to achieve a therapeutic effect in
Asian and Caucasian patients. This could be one rea-
son why drugs that have been established as safe in
one country must undergo new safety testing in other
countries.
Researchers throughout the world are demonstrat-
ing that ethnic origin can strongly influence the
responses to therapeutic drugs. Ethnic groups studied
range from Greenlanders to South African blacks. But
most studies have involved Asians.
Investigators conducting studies of other drugs
besides those for mental illness are reporting signifi-
cant racial differences in therapeutic results. For
example, Dr. Hong-Hao Zhou and others at Vanderbilt
University in Nashville found that men of Chinese ori-
gin have at least a two-fold greater sensitivity than
white Americans to the effects of propranolol, a drug
used to control blood pressure and heart rate.

that nearly a quarter of all Americans
suffer from Syndrome X, most middle
aged and older. It is a precursor of more serious things
if allowed to remain unchecked.
According to a study published in Journal of the
American Medical Association in 2002, people are said
to suffer from Syndrome X if they meet three or more
criteria: blood pressure 130/85 or higher; waist circum-
ference greater than 40 inches in men or 35 in women;
fasting blood glucose 110 mg/dl or higher; serum
triglycerides 150 mg/dl or higher and HDL cholesterol
levels less than 40 mg/dl for men, 50 for women.
Syndrome X frequently progresses to full-blown
Type II diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, hyper-
tension, stroke, and about any cardiovascular problems
you can mention. Although the syndrome has been
linked to a high-fat diet and sedentary lifestyle, as well
as genetic factors, it is now known that disordered
insulin metabolism [insulin resistance] is a key cause of
Syndrome X, according to a study published in 2001 in
the Journal of Nutrition. Fifty percent of individuals
with hypertension have insulin resistance.

meals daily, with no snacks in between, is the best way
to normalize insulin resistance. In the condition of
insulin resistance, muscle cells [which use 75% of the
body’s blood sugar] become incapable of “hearing”

Dr. Reaven admitted in an interview that he does not
know what actually causes insulin resistance but they
seem to be closing in on it.
“Some time ago, in collaboration with a group in
Phoenix, Ariz., we studied a group of non-diabetic Pima
Indians and a group of non-diabetic people of European
ancestry living in the San Francisco Bay area,” he said.
“About half of the variability in insulin resistance, com-
paring these two groups, was due to either differences in
maximal aerobic capacity or differences in obesity.

“To summarize, half of the variability from person to
person in terms of the degree of insulin resistance is due
to their genes and about half is due to lifestyle variables.
Of equal importance are the differences in degrees of
obesity and degrees of fitness. We do not know the
molecular genetic defect. Compared to LDL choles-
terol, which is more genetically regulated, there is more
potential impact of lifestyle change on insulin resist-
ance. There are also enormous ethnic differences. Every
ethnic group of non-European ancestry, when matched
for variables, is more insulin resistant. The most insulin
resistant group studied is South Asian Indians.” ♥
