nonverbal.ThewayIcommunicatewithothersisspectacular,butsometimesmisinterpretedbymy
nonverbalbehavior.TheresdifferentpartstononverbalthatoftenIdontevenrealizelikemy
appearance,face/eyes,paralanguage,distance,andespeciallyposture.
Whenanindividualgivesofftherightnonverbalcommunicationsitleavesnoquestionbetween
thesenderandreceiver.Creatingapowerfulmessage,Ineedtobeabletoidentifywhentousethe
correctnonverbalbehaviorandhowtoreadpotentialclientsnonverbalbehavioraswell.

DescriptionofProblem:
WithoutthinkingIoftenfindmyselfslouchingwhileatschool.Likemanyotherstudents,Iam
constantlyyawninginthemornings.Thetextbookstateswhilenonverbalcommunicationcancreatea
powerfulimpression,themessageitconveyareambiguous.(CommunicatingatWork,Pg.92)Ihave
neverrealizedhowbigofanimpactnonverbalcommunicationhasonothersandhoweasilyitistobe
misinterpreted.AlthoughImaybeyawningbecauseanotherstudenthasyawned,Iamconveyingthe
wrongmessagetoothersaroundmeandespeciallytheteacherwhoistakingtheirtimetoteachme.
InthebusinesssettingIamgoingtohavetoidentifythedifferentculturesandwhattypeof
nonverbalbehaviortouse.Distancebetweeneachindividualisaperfectexampleofhownonverbal
behaviorissignificantlydifferentincultures.BusinessdealscangothewrongwayifIdisrespectan
individualsculturebynonverbalbehavior.Ineedtobeabletoidentifywhatisappropriateforthattype
ofsetting.

Beingawareofmynonverbalbehaviorissomethingthatneedstobedone.Mymother,Kristy,
isatrustworthyandstraightforwardpersonwhowillcallmeoutwhenIamdoingsomethingIshouldnt
be.IbelieveshewillbeabletohelpmerealizewhenIamdoingthelittlethingsthatportraythewrong
message.Forexample,likeyawningwhiletalkingtomymotherorhavingpoorposturewhenIam
sittingdown.Mymotherisgivingmecriticisminapositivewaytobettermycommunications.
Thetextbookisagreatresourcetofindoutinformationandstudyfrom.Thereissevendifferent
typesofnonverbalcommunicationanditbreaksitalldownformebyeachtype.Bygivinganindepth
descriptionofwhateachshouldtypelooklikeandhowIcanuseittoconveymymessageinthecorrect
way.ThisallowsmetowritenotesandsetmygoalsforeachweekonhowIcanbettermynonverbal
communication.

Recommendations:
Communicationsiskeyinthebusinessrealm.Inorderformetogiveoffandconveythecorrect
messagetotherecieverIneedtobeabletounderstandhowmymessagesexpressedwithoutwords
affectmymessagebeingsent.Theimportanceofnonverbalbehavioristremendousincommunication
becauseitresemblesverbalcommunication,butisverydifferentinitsownway.
Characteristicsofnonverbalbehavioristhefirstoutlineinthebook.Thecharacteristicsalways
havecommunicativevalue.Thetextbookstates,youmaynotalwaysintendtosendnonverbal
messages,buteverythingaboutyourappearance,everymovement,facialexpression,everynuanceof
yourvoicehasthepotentialtoconveymeaning.(CommunicatingatWork,Pg.91).Byfullybeing
awareofmynonverbalbehaviorIcanformapowerfulpositiveimpressiononothers,especiallythoseof
differentcultures.Afirstimpressionisoneofthemostimportantthingsbecauseithasthebiggest
influenceonourimpressionsandjudgmentsofpeople.Iwanttobeabletoleaveapositiveandhappy
influenceandimpressiononthosewhoIcomeintocontactwith.
Thetypesofnonverbalcommunicationandcultureboundisthesecondstepoutlinedinchapter
four.InthissectionIcanreadabouttheseventypesofnonverbalcommunicationtofullyunderstand
whateachtypeconsistsof.Also,howeachtypeplaysaroleindifferentcultures.Somebehavioris

monitoringyournonverbalbehaviorandtheimmediacy.Selfmonitoringistheprocessofpayingclose
attentiontoyourbehaviorandusingtheseobservationstoshapethewayyoubehave.Theterm
immediacydescribesverbalandnonverbalbehaviorsthatindicateclosenessandliking.

definesthatrelation.
IfItakeintheinformationIhavereadfromthebookandputmyknowledgetowork,Ibelieve
myplantoselfmonitormynonverbalbehaviorwillwork.IcannotoverselfmonitormyselforelseI
willbecometooselfconsciousthough.ItwillbeahugeresourcebyhavingmyMotherhelpmecorrect
mynonverbalcommunicationforthefirstlittlewhile.Workingwithherwillallowhertogivemegood
criticisminawaythatwillbeveryusefulformyfutureandcareer.Itissomethingthatistremendouslyto
notonlyme,butthepeoplearoundmeaswell.
Conclusion:
Oftenmynonverbalcommunicationsportraysthewrongmessagetoothers.Thereceiverofthe
messagegetsconfusedbywhatIamtryingtoportray.Ihavelearnedfromreadingthatby
selfmonitoringmyselfIcanslowlygetinthehabitofknowingwhattypeofbehaviorIshouldusewhile
indifferentsituations.Alsobyotherscritiquingmynonverbalcueslikemyposture,Icanuseittomy
fullestadvantageandtoconveymymessagestherightway.Iamecstatictobeabletolearnaboutthis
andputittouseinmyworkforceforthefuture.Itallowsmetoabletobuildbetterrelationships,not
onlyinbusiness,butfamilyandfriendstoo.
