SAFETY

P
reviously we have considered some
of the basic issues relating to safety
and it is also prudent to consider how to
remain safe in the event of an accident.
As with all emergency rst aid situa-
tions the cause of the accident should be
ascertained and the area should be made
safe. There is little benet in the rescuer
needing to be rescued. It would be easy to
jump to conclusions in such an emergency
situation but a cool head is rather required.
Remember that what may at rst appear
to be an electrical accident may be com-
pletely unrelated and the equipment could
still be live so always disable the power
rst and discharge and earth the equip-
ment before attempting to contact or enter
the vicinity of the accident.
Once the area has been made safe, it
may be prudent to call for assistance and
provide rst aid to any victims of the ac-
cident as per your rst aid training. First
aid should be applied by persons trained
in these techniques. When utilising high
voltage equipment there should always
be someone nearby who has this type of
training.
DIAGNOSTICS
Trending
One of the more useful aspects of an
accurate, repeatable measurement is the
ability to record data over time so that the
trend in the measurement can be observed.
The rate of change of the measured value
over time can be an additional useful
indicator of the rate of deterioration of the
device. If necessary the test interval can be
reduced to reduce the risk of operational
failure.
Phase comparisons
Where no trend can be observed because
of a lack of previous data, or where the
operator is unsure of the
data, is it often useful to compare
the same measurement made on
different phases of the same ca-
ble or made on similar, adjacent
cables.
This has two benets. If the
measurements are as expected
for the other phases then it serves
to conrm some aspects of the
performance of the measuring
equipment as well the test setup.
It is less likely that all phases are
equally deteriorated. Secondly
if an unusual reading is obtained
on all phases then it is important
to re-evaluate the measurement
setup and technique.
EVENTS
H
VDSA will be par-
ticipating in EPP 2010 in
Beijing, China in October and
will be attending the CPRI Cable
Tech 2010 in Bangalore in No-
vember followed by the presenta-
tion of equipment at other venues
around India.
In 2011 HVDSA will be ac-
tively participating in exhibitions
and conferences and it will be
expected of our agents that they
arrange technical seminars where
HVDSA will present technical papers to
potential and existing customers.
STANDARDS
I
n many regions the sales of HVDSA
products has improved dramatically
with the release of standards that specify
VLF testing for cables, motors or genera-
tors.
It is important for our agents to become
involved in their local standards organisa-
tions and lobby for the upgrading of their
local standards. The IEEE 400 standards
are the most advanced internationally and
are a great template for the development
of local standards.
