Community Memorial Garden

Jaime Schussler
Proposal: After meeting with Mayor Williams, he confirmed my interest in the
river front and his Chicago-charged ambition to brighten the city with flowers,
trees, shrubbery, and so forth. In the initial process, I based much of my
research off of beautification grants that involved community gardens, but with
further research and creativity, I would like to pitch the idea of a memorial
garden.
It has been proven to drive loyalty and community involvement if a garden is
put in place. With that factor, this memorial garden would span along the
riverfront in periodic sections. Residents, visitors, business, or organizations
could buy their plant of choice with plot of choice in memory of a person, cause,
or special event. With that charge, the garden organization will order according
to their request and engrave that cause on an associated wall, plaque, or fitting
memorial type.
Additionally, I believe by instating a self-serve philosophy by instructing the
residents to care for their specific flower/tree will create a loyalty and
continuity in the success of the garden. With many available grants for
community gardens, the project kick-off will stay relatively low in cost and
accomplish two main goals set by the mayor (community garden and river front
development).
