The map was created using the terrestrial and hydrographic elevation data obtained from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). The integration of hydrographic and terrestrial datainvolved importing from different file formats, registration, merging and reprojection. In order to obtain the CSR, land/water features were separated and different colour schemes were applied to each. Downloading The data was downloaded from:- National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) - http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/global.html (ETOPO1 data) - http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/globe.html (GLOBE data) Importing Both ETOPO1 and Globe datasets were imported into a PIX file usingFIMPORT. Using PROSET in EASI the coordinate system for ETOPO1 was defined using the metadata from the NGDC website above. Integration The two datasets were then integrated into a seamless composite DEM with 1 arc- minute bathymetric and 30 arc-second terrestrial elevations. Using IMERGE the two PIX files were combined into a single composite PIX file while retaining best resolution of each data. Merging Globe Multiple Globe tiles downloaded were combined into one PIX file, usingIMERGE with the same pixel size, extents and coordinate system. Adding ETOPO1 Using IMERGE again the ETOPO1 data was added to the GLOBE data as separate channel, as IMERGE is capable of handling datasets different extents, coordinate systems and pixel sizes. Mask A mask was created using the model on statement, which stated to turn on any GLOBE DEM pixels are not equal to -500(no data value). Merging After the DEMs were placed in the same PIX file, they were merged into a third channel to finalize the integration process. Projection A Gnomonic projection was used to showthe Antarctic region. This is a common projection used extensively in photography. Hence it should create a good CSR map. The re-projection parameters were copied to userproj.txt and REPROJ command was used in EASI to re- project. Colour Shaded Relief Shaded Relief A shaded relief of the entire DEM was produced using the REL command in EASI. Scaling Land & Water DEMs Using the SCALE command land and water elevation values were separated into different 8-bit channels. Pseudo-Colour Tables A PCT was created for both land & water DEM and exported into PIX file using the PCTREAD command. The PCTs were then encoded into separate RED, Green, Blue channels in the PIX file. Merging RGB & Shaded Relief The two pairs of RGB channels were then merged back together to create a seamless colour image. Using the Weighted Multiplication method the final CSR was created. The shaded relief was assigned 0.3 weight and the RGB channels were assigned 0.7 weight.
