1. SCOPE This Guide covers the basic requirements for reciprocating positive displacement pumps for use in petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants. Both direct-acting (steam, gas driven) and power frame types are included. Controlled-volume (proportioning) positive displacement pumps are covered separately in EGE 15-B-12. 2. REFERENCES The following publications form a part of this Guide. Unless otherwise specified herein, use the latest edition.

3. GENERAL 3.1 Reciprocating positive displacement pumps shall conform to API Standard 674 except as modified by Section 4 of this Guide. 3.2 Vendors shall comply with the requirements of EGE 00-C-4, as well as the specific requirements of API Standard 674 as amended in Section 4 of this Guide. 3.3 All equipment covered by this Guide or any referenced specification shall meet the applicable noise levels established in EGE 00-B-5 without the benefit of additional physical devices or enclosures. 3.4 All equipment covered by this Guide shall be designed for operation in a totally unprotected, outdoor installation unless otherwise specified on EGE 15-D-17 (a or b). 3.5 The vendor shall furnish the pump, driver, gear reducer (if required), couplings, guards, baseplate, lubricators, and auxiliary components in accordance with this Guide. The vendor shall be responsible for the guarantee and overall performance of the pump, driver, and auxiliaries. 3.6 If two or more pumps are purchased for the same service conditions, the parts (including all subassemblies) shall be interchangeable. 4. MODIFICATIONS TO API STANDARD 674 The following items are amendments to API Standard 674, May 1980. The section and paragraph numbers refer to those given in that standard.
SECTION 2 BASIC DESIGN

Paragraph 2.1.2 (Substitution)


Sound levels of all equipment furnished by the vendor shall conform to the requirements of Paragraph 3.3 of this Guide.

Paragraph 2.1.3 (Substitution)


All equipment shall be designed to run safely to the trip speed (for variable speed units) and relief valve set pressure, plus 12 percent.

Paragraph 2.1.4, Second Sentence (Substitution)


The equipment and piping arrangement for safe access and maintenance shall be developed jointly by the purchaser and the vendor. However, the overall viability of the design for operating and safety purposes shall remain the vendors responsibility.

Preference shall be given to designs that minimize the need for special tools.

Paragraph 2.6.2.1, First Sentence (Substitution)


Rods an plungers in contact with packing shall be hardened to a minimum of Rockwell C35. (Coating shall only be used with specific Mobil approval.)

Paragraph 2.6.3 (Addition)


The valves for each cylinder shall be accessible through bolted valve covers, without major disassembly of the liquid end or disturbance to other cylinders or piping. Designs requiring removal of entire suction or discharge header blocks to gain access to an individual valve are not acceptable without prior Mobil approval.

Paragraph 2.6.4 (Addition)


The vendor shall use solid metal, metal clad, or confined and compression-restricted, spiral-wound metal, nonasbestos filled gaskets conforming to API Standard 601 for design temperatures over 260[degree]C (500 [degree]F).

Paragraph 2.6.6.8 (New)


When pumping fluids with a high vapor pressure [greater than 101.33 kPa abs (14.7 psia) at pumping temperature], a double packing gland assembly, with connections for venting to a safe area, shall be provided

Paragraph 2.6.6.9 (New)


Asbestos rod packing shall not be specified. The vendor shall provide a suitable nonasbestos substitute.

Paragraph 2.7.1 (Modification)


The provisions specified in Paragraphs 2.7.1.1 through 2.7.1.4 shall apply.

Paragraph 2.7.2 (Addition)


On belt-driven units, extended drive shaft construction shall be used, and the bearings and crankcase shall be suitable for the sideloads imposed by the drive.

Paragraph 2.7.6 (Addition)


The frame shall be of adequate strength to prevent failure under stall or maximum relief valve setting conditions.

Paragraph 2.7.9, Third Sentence (Substitution)


When specified minimum ambient temperatures are below the vendors minimum recommended crankcase oil operating temperatures, an adjustable, thermostatically controlled electric immersion type of heating element and a dial thermometer in a separate thermowell shall be provided in the pump crankcase reservoir.

The distance piece shall be of sufficient length to permit the fitting of a deflector on the piston rod and shall be of adequate strength to prevent failure under stall or maximum relief valve setting conditions.

Paragraph 2.7.11 (Addition)


Covers shall be lightweight for easy inspection and sufficiently sturdy for personnel protection. These covers or louvers shall be designed to minimize the entrance of dust, dirt, and debris into the distance piece compartment.

Paragraph 2.7.13 (Addition)


The drain shall empty all compartments of the distance piece, irrespective of the positioning of stiffening webs and other equipment.

Paragraph 2.7.14 (Addition)


A deflector plate should be fitted to prevent gland leakage from accumulating in the bottom of the distance piece and entering the power frame packing.

Paragraph 2.9.1.1 (Addition)


The lubricant level indicator shall continuously cover the range from minimum to maximum safe working levels.

Paragraph 2.9.1.3 (Substitution)


The power end oil pump for pressure system shall be positive displacement, shaft driven.

Paragraph 2.9.1.4 (Addition)


A dual-replaceable-element, cartridge-type filter with transfer valve and block valves shall be provided for continuously operating, unspared equipment. A single-replaceable-element filter without a valved bypass or block valves shall be provided for spared or intermittent-service equipment.

Paragraph 2.9.1.6 (Substitution)


For pressurized lubrication systems, the following auxiliary equipment shall be provided: (1) oil flow indicator, (2) oil pressure gage (downstream of filter and cooler), (3) oil temperature gage with thermowell (downstream of cooler), (4) oil pump suction strainer, (5) oil cooler, and (6) pre-lube oil pump with motor driver, coupling, and guard. The pre-lube pump shall be capable of wetting all internal bearing, bushing, gear meshing, and sliding surfaces and shall be piped to discharge through the oil filter(s). The motor driver shall meet the same area classification as the main driver. All pipe flanges and fittings used shall be in accordance with ASME B16.5.

Paragraph 2.9.2.1 (Modification)


Unless otherwise specified, a mechanical lubricator shall be furnished for lubrication of the stuffing box and any other points requiring lubrication.

Paragraph 2.9.2.5 (Substitution)


Unless otherwise specified, power pump stuffing box lubricators shall be separately motor driven. On direct-acting pumps, the stuffing box lubricators shall be ratchet driven by the pump. Motors shall meet the

same area classification as the main driver.

Paragraph 2.9.2.6, Second Sentence (Modification)


For lubrication points that could possibly experience full product pressure, a suitable check valve shall be supplied in the lubricant line at the point of lubrication.

Paragraph 2.10.1.1 (Addition)


All materials of construction shall be subject to Mobil approval.

Paragraph 2.10.1.9 (New)


The hardness of welds and heat-affected zones (HAZ) of all carbon steel and low-alloy steel equipment exposed to wet hydrogen sulfide (more than 100 ppm H2S), amines, caustic, or aqueous acidic solutions shall not exceed 225 HB (Brinell hardness No.). All carbon steel and low-alloy steel equipment subject to this exposure shall be postweld heat treated if the minimum specification tensile strength exceeds 414 MPa (60,000 psi).

Paragraph 2.10.1.10 (New)


Other materials (except carbon and low-alloy steel) in wet H2S service shall meet requirements of NACE MR-01-75.

Paragraph 2.10.1.11 (New)


Cast iron shall not be used for pressure-containing parts in toxic, combustible, or critical services. Cast, fabricated, or forged steel components shall be used instead.

Paragraph 2.10.2.1 (Addition)


All castings shall meet requirements of EGE 00-B-20.

Paragraph 2.10.2.3 (Substitution)


Ferrous and nonferrous castings for pressure-containing parts shall not be repaired by peening, plugging, burning-in, or impregnation. Repairs by welding are limited to cast steel and weldable grades of cast stainless steel and must be specifically approved by Mobil prior to the start of repairs.

Paragraph 2.10.4.1 (Modification)


All welding of piping and pressure-containing components and any weld repairs shall be performed by welders and procedures qualified in accordance with Section IX of the ASME code. Such welding or repairs shall meet all requirements of EGE 00-B-21.

Paragraph 2.10.4.3, First Sentence (Modification)


Pressure containing components fabricated or repaired by welding shall conform, as a minimum, to the specifications given in Items 1 through 4 below.

Auxiliary piping welded to chromium-molybdenum alloy steel or 12 percent chrome steel components shall be the same material, except as specifically approved by Mobil.

Paragraph 2.10.4.5 (New)


Because of cyclic stress loading, repairs to distance pieces and crankcases shall be made to the same standard as if they were pressure-containing components.
SECTION 3 ACCESSORIES

Paragraph 3.1.4, Second Sentence (Substitution)


The motor nameplate rating plus service factor shall not be exceeded at 115 percent of the relief valve set pressure.

Paragraph 3.2.6 (New)


Unless otherwise specified, couplings shall be of the nonlubricated, flexible disc pack type with stainless steel discs and forged steel hubs.

Paragraph 3.3.2 (Substitution)


Coupling and belt guards shall be constructed completely from nonsparking materials.

Paragraph 3.4.1 (Substitution)


All reciprocating pump drivers and auxiliary equipment shall be baseplate mounted unless otherwise specified.

Paragraph 3.4.10.2 (Modification)


Unless otherwise specified, baseplates shall be suitable for column mounting (that is, of sufficient rigidity to be supported at specified points) without continuous grouting under structural members.

Paragraph 3.4.10.6
Nonskid decking shall be included on the top of all baseplates in all walk and work areas.

Paragraph 3.4.10.11 (Addition)


Baseplates and skids shall be machined in such a way as to require shims under the driver. Shims should be stainless steel, minimum 3 mm ( in.) thick to 9.5 mm ( in.) thick, with no more than two shims under each foot.

Paragraph 3.5.4 (Substitution)


Belt drives shall normally be limited to 75 kW (100 bhp); however, they may be applied up to 100 kW (150 bhp) in special cases if specifically approved by Mobil. Belt drives shall be integral multi-V belts unless otherwise specified. If more than one integral multi-V is required, the vendor shall furnish matched belt lengths. All belt drives shall be static conducting and oil resistant and shall be conservatively sized for long life when transmitting the full driven horsepower. The drive service factor shall not be less than 2.0 for any plunger or piston pump.

Paragraph 3.5.7 (Substitution)


Gear reducers or other mutually agreeable drive arrangements should be considered in lieu of belt drives in hazardous (combustible vapor) areas, as defined in NFPA 70. The quality and service factor, as defined in AGMA Standard 420, shall be no less than that of the internal gearing in power pumps.

Paragraph 3.5.8 (new)


Drive arrangements (belt or gears) with motors mounted on top of the pump crankcase are not acceptable unless specifically approved by Mobil.

Paragraph 3.7.4.1, First Sentence (Substitution)


The vendor shall furnish pulsation suppression devices (to be located at the pump suction and discharge connections) t o limit peak-to-peak pulsations to 5 percent of line pressure. Details of the suppression devices shall be given in the vendor's proposal and on EGE 15-D-17.
SECTION 4 INSPECTION AND TESTS

Paragraph 4.2.7 (Modification)


The oil system furnished shall meet the standard of cleanliness required by API Standard 614.

Paragraph 4.2.9 (Modification)


When H2S and/or amines are specified to be present in the pumped fluid, the hardness of parts, welds, and heat-affected zones shall be verified as being within the allowable values by testing of the parts. The method, extent, documentation, and witnessing of tests shall be mutually agreed upon by Mobil and the vendor.

Paragraph 4.2.11 (New)


In order to eliminate bolt binding interferences during field alignment, the position of the job driver and driven equipment shall be checked on the baseplate (if so mounted) prior to drilling holddown bolts.

Paragraph 4.3.4.1 (Addition)


The minimum running period for this test is one hour.

Paragraph 4.4.1, Second Sentence (Substitution)


The preparation shall be suitable for a period of one year of outdoor storage from the time of shipment, and disassembly of the equipment shall not be required except for inspection of bearings and seals.

Paragraph 4.4.2.2 (Addition)


Mobilarma 247 and 355 series products are preferred for this purpose.
SECTION 6 VENDOR'S DATA

Paragraph 6.1, Item 8 (Substitution)


8. A list of spare parts required for normal maintenance for a period of two years shall be provided. Prices
