1. SCOPE This Guide covers the basic requirements for reciprocating positive displacement pumps for use in petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants. Both direct-acting (steam, gas driven) and power frame types are included. Controlled-volume (proportioning) positive displacement pumps are covered separately in EGE 15-B-12. 2. REFERENCES The following publications form a part of this Guide. Unless otherwise specified herein, use the latest edition.

3. GENERAL 3.1 Reciprocating positive displacement pumps shall conform to API Standard 674 except as modified by Section 4 of this Guide. 3.2 Vendors shall comply with the requirements of EGE 00-C-4, as well as the specific requirements of API Standard 674 as amended in Section 4 of this Guide. 3.3 All equipment covered by this Guide or any referenced specification shall meet the applicable noise levels established in EGE 00-B-5 without the benefit of additional physical devices or enclosures. 3.4 All equipment covered by this Guide shall be designed for operation in a totally unprotected, outdoor installation unless otherwise specified on EGE 15-D-17 (a or b). 3.5 The vendor shall furnish the pump, driver, gear reducer (if required), couplings, guards, baseplate, lubricators, and auxiliary components in accordance with this Guide. The vendor shall be responsible for the guarantee and overall performance of the pump, driver, and auxiliaries. 3.6 If two or more pumps are purchased for the same service conditions, the parts (including all subassemblies) shall be interchangeable. 4. MODIFICATIONS TO API STANDARD 674 The following items are amendments to API Standard 674, May 1980. The section and paragraph numbers refer to those given in that standard.
SECTION 2 BASIC DESIGN
Preference shall be given to designs that minimize the need for special tools.
The distance piece shall be of sufficient length to permit the fitting of a deflector on the piston rod and shall be of adequate strength to prevent failure under stall or maximum relief valve setting conditions.
Auxiliary piping welded to chromium-molybdenum alloy steel or 12 percent chrome steel components shall be the same material, except as specifically approved by Mobil.
Paragraph 3.4.10.6
Nonskid decking shall be included on the top of all baseplates in all walk and work areas.
