Social Media-Final

1. In our book, The Facebook Effect it says, It changes how people communicate and
interact, how marketers sell products, how governments reach out to citizens, even how
companies operate. (Kirkpatrick, Pg. 15) I related this to our interview assignment
because in the interview, my brother told me that his company, Novo Nordisk uses
social media in huge way to promote different events. For example, every year they hold
the American Diabetes Association walks and uses social media for things like
introducing the walks, informing the people, and signing people up for the walk.
Facebook is a huge part in this because they use it to advertise.

Morales spent a day asking himself if he was willing to go public on Facebook. He
decided to take the plunge, and on the 4
th
created a group against FARC. (Pg. 2) In this
passage of The Facebook Effect, they were referring to when Oscar Morales started the
Facebook wall to stop the horrible acts of a group called FARC against a little Columbian
boy. This reminded me of when in my interview, my brother said, Stagnancy is not an
option. Much like Oscar Morales, who decided to step up and do something to help the
little Columbian boy, my brother always steps up to make strides towards his goals and
career. In that way, he and Oscar are very similar. They are proactive, goal-oriented, and
motivated.

In The Facebook Effect, there is a quote from Dave Morin that reads, Our mission since
day one has been to make society more open. (Pg. 207) This reminds me of the part in
my interview where Bobby talks about the mission of his company, Novo Nordisk.
Bobby said, At my organization, they really like candidates with a diverse background.
This to me means that Novo is a very open company. They are willing to hire people
without science degrees because their goal is a well-rounded company. It is the same for
Facebook. Their mission is to make society more open.

2. Core strategy sets the long-term direction for all of your content-related initiatives-
ensuring all activities, big or small, are working together towards the same magnificent
future. (Halvorson & Rach, Pg. 96) An effective core strategy is flexible, aspirational,
memorable, motivational, and inclusive. (Pg. 96) The Facebook Effect says, Many
people on the other hand, found practical and wholesome uses for Thefacebook-creating
study groups for classes, arranging meetings for clubs, and posting notices about parties.
(Pg. 32) In relation to core strategy, this is the Facebook developers being flexible. They
had to develop many needs for Facebook because not everybody was going to use it for
the same reason. One of the concepts described in core strategy is motivation. In creating
Facebook, the developers focus was to make it worthwhile and somewhat exciting. This
included making something that people want to be part of. That is the exact definition of
motivational in our Content Strategy book. (Pg. 96) The developers of Facebook had to
make something that people would catch on too and enjoy or it wouldnt be successful.
The last way I can relate core strategy to The Facebook Effect is on page 307, there is a
prime example of being flexible. They talk about when Facebook edited their terms of
service. Everyone ignored this at first because it was written with a bunch of words that
no one understood. Eventually, Facebook changed the wording to be more user-friendly
and this caused uproar. They had to be flexible and cater to the needs of the users or they
would start losing them.

3. Three items from my preparation for my blog post that can be related to passages of The
Facebook Effect are:

On page 4 of The Facebook Effect, it says, Convinced Morales that he should propose a
demonstration. When he did, the idea was received on the wall and discussion board by
acclamation. In relation to my own preparation, this was when I had to propose an idea for my
blog to my Professor and classmates. They were able to tell me if it was a good idea and let me
know how to expand my thoughts. In The Facebook Effect, Morales had to propose his
demonstration and get approval.

The whole concept of Facebook was created and changed numerous times to cater to the needs of
the users. Every time that I thought of an idea for my blog, I had to make sure it was what people
wanted to read about. It is the same concept. When making Facebook and when making my blog,
the people using and reading them had to be taken into consideration. If people werent
interested, both would fail.

On page 22, it says, Zuckerberg was by nature blunt, even sometimes brutally honest-a trait he
may have acquired from his mother. In preparing for my blog, I had to decide whether I wanted
to be brutally blunt or sugar coat a little. My blog is about going to college when you are ready;
not when your family is ready for you to go. I had to carefully word my blog, so readers
wouldnt get the wrong idea. I wasnt discouraging kids from going to college; I was simply
sending the message of going when you are ready. In Zuckerbergs case, he had to be careful
about being too blunt when creating Facebook or it could have cause legal issues.

4. There were a few links that I noticed about my interview with a professional and my own
preparation for my blog post. In my blog I said, I am double majoring in Early
Childhood Education and Communication Studies. In my interviews with a professional
my brother said, I have a double degree in Communications and Journalism. We both
are double majoring to secure our careers and give us more options. With the ever
changing fields, you have to stay on top of things and certified to open more doors for
yourself and that is exactly what both, my brother and I are doing. Another link that I
found was there is a section in my blog called, From freshman to business woman and
in my interviews my brother said, There are so many opportunities that you can literally
envision where you want to be from a short-term to long-term goal perspective and then
put the pieces of the puzzle together to get there. This is exactly what I did. I tried out
different paths including different colleges and jobs to see where I wanted to be and
where I belonged. At Novo Nordisk, this is encouraged to move up the ladder in the
company. The last link I found between my preparation for my blog and my interview
with a professional was my brother said, We all have different career paths that got us to
where we are now. My blog clearly shows that I took different paths to find the best one
for me. What is the right path for me may not be the same path that others take and that is
OK. I used to feel bad about being 27 and still in college, but that was just my path and
now I am the happiest Ive ever been. I also have a lot to be proud of because I am a
Deans List student and Academic Honors student. This wouldnt have happened without
taking the path that I did.
