Analysis
Everything depends on a system or way of life in todays world, with the foundation of
that system or way of life to have countless possibilities. Tomorrow is always a mystery surly
goes a long way with everyones life in different ways according to how one is allowed to live.
In dystopian fiction the society is usually seen as perfect but is horribly corrupted. Novels of the
dystopian genre have exaggerated, relatable situation seen in the world today. Dystopian fiction
is used to bring the readers awareness of the numerous outcomes of a society gone wrong. In my
story of Hybrids the use of dystopian fiction is making a comment on the social issue of ad-
vancement in medicine, and how it can be used in a corrupt way to ruin society.
First hand experiences vary from being the one who went through a certain situation or
someone who witnessed a situation long enough to have been impacted by the outcome. Most of
those who are sick immediately figure the best thing to do is seek medical attention, and that
within itself I feel is a social norm that is toxic. The reliance and trust held in doctors to help
those in need has grown rapidly and going in to a hospital one always expects to come out cured
and that idea is corrupted and seen as a typical outcome because of the way society has given
hospitals the bigger stick. I say this with a heavy heart and a very relatable story that is one of
many families stories this one in particular on the date of November 18th 2013 a diagnoses was
given to a three month year old baby but was given the news of an early stage diagnoses that
allowed for sufficient time to be examined and treated. Throughout the days that followed tests
Flores 2

were done and news was given of cancer as well as a procedure to be done to give the baby a
chance to have it removed. Ones typical reaction is at the doctor they know what they are doing,
but the reality of the matter is that advancement in technology has allowed for a misconception
of hope to come along when possibilities always remain infinite. In this particular case on the
2nd of February 2014 it wasnt the sickness that got to the baby but the small percentage of death
presented for the parents to sign if the surgery didnt go well. This dystopian form of corruption
can already be seen throughout the high expectancies of life and the fragile ways that advance-
ments in technology and medicine are misinterpreted.
The medical field is growing in numerous ways that are beneficial, but can be turned to
be used in the wrong way. Advancements in medicine isnt only aiding those who are sick to be
healthy, but expanding the knowledge of what can be created and inserted into humans with a
simple syringe. An advancement in the medical field is the use of visual aid and understanding of
what goes on in the human body. In the article of, A Doctor Bridging Arts and Sciences it ex-
plains the power of an artist and a medical student informing the world of what it is that goes on
insides our bodies through pictures. Visual aids are a huge part of understandings in the medical
field and shouldnt be taken lightly. Also another article talks about the power of companies, dis-
ease related foundations, main trade groups, and federal agencies coming together to create and
prescribe new drugs needed by patients. It brings up the issue of who is handling all the infor-
mation exchanged between these major groups and what types of medicines they are providing.
If these things arent kept in line a major uprising could be seen in the future with all things in
the medical field.
In the story of Hybrids the character Julian fits the typical conventions of a dystopian
government. He is a scientist that corrupts the world into a new form of the perfect species.
Flores 3

Year 2552 Mother and Father have realized their mistake, I found this as an opportunity to tell
them of my new medicine for a new species. They think I have gone mad, but I believe they can-
not handle the truth of this ugly world and how my new evolution will solve it, (6). This exam-
ple shows the way a government of ruling of a society is corrupted yet made to seem, perfect.
The character of Julian is a scientist who creates a medicine thatll transform humans into a dif-
ferent species; this is an exaggerated outcome of what advancements can happen in the medical
field if the rules and regulations on who handles the knowledge of the makings of new medicine
isnt kept in line.
Half of the city had been closed off or burned down because of how many citizens had
died there. The neighborhoods were closed in tight with untrusting neighbors in every corner, no
one around the city could trust anything or anyone in account to how many people started dying
for no particular reason, (4). In the story of Hybrids the natural world no longer exists to be safe
clearly a dystopian standard convention. Throughout the story of Hybrids it explains an unnatural
source that was killing the humans yet making the environment of the city beautiful. It later re-
veals that the source of the killings of the human race was also in the hands of scientist and the
wrong types of experiments done to an unknown medicine, Mother and Father are ready to
send the antidote tested on animals through all the vents of Boston. Within days the people will
start to fall sick. I am ready. I am working on a new medicine thatll let the humans survive. Ill
make them new, (6). The death of humans in the society, in the hands of the corrupted gov-
ernment who seems to be making a perfect world is a dystopian fiction trait. The advancement
and understanding of new medicine allows for numerous possibilities to evolve with a pure or
cruel intention.

At the end of the story of Hybrids the conformation of the new society by the civilians is
also a standard dystopian convention. As if the seemingly perfect world is what people need to
get by in life the main character that was against everything the world was coming to, is forced
to give in just to save the innocent lives that are going to die. It is then when Marie notices the
gift she has been given, and she escorts the man inside the penthouse and tells her brother, We
shall save the park for another day, today you heal this man. The character though indifferent
was forced to give into the plan of the one in power or face the horrible consequences of death.
This conformation of the society being sick and in need of searching for a cure relates to the arti-
cle that speaks of a number of great powers getting together to find needed cures for diseases.
The everyday decisions of a person come down to what every it is that person wants to
do. In the advancements of medicine the medical field is given a wide list of options that can
help aid or cure a sickness, but that power in the wrong hands can give serious consequences. In
a corrupted society it is possible that the government may abuse the power given to them in the
medical field. As dystopian fiction portrays, the civilians of a society are no longer safe to the
outside world filled with corruption. And everyday sick patients are forced to conform to what it
is the medical field has to offer, seeing as the other option of getting healthy is death.
The moral of the story Hybrids is to have a tight control of the medical field and who
controls the foundation of medicines used everyday by innocent vulnerable individuals. It is very
important to know where how the cures or treatments given to sick patients are constructed and
what they are tested on. Sometimes those who get sick just go in for a check up at their doctors
office and fully trust the system to give them exactly what they believe they need to get better,
but what happens when that trust is taken advantage of. The possibilities of any outcome are al-
ways infinite and the future holds changes not only in the progression of medicine, but the
Flores 5

changes of who is in control of the medicine. Its very important to be aware, get informed, and
always look for those changes that may be good or bad.
