Running GeoEditor
GeoEditor runs in a browser window. By default, GeoEditors URL is http://localhost:88/!eoeditor or
you can go to OpenGeo suites Dashboard and hit on launch lin ne!t to Geo"ditor

GeoEditor has a sin!le, inte!rated wor"space where you can e#a$ine and $anipulate your data. %here are
three panels and one window:
%he Layers panel lists selected layers with associated le!end in the Legend tab. &ou can use the
Layers panel to $ana!e display options.
%he Tools panel contains tools for selectin!, editin!, and 'iewin! layers. %o 'iew infor$ation about
any tool, position the pointer o'er it. %he na$e of the tool appears in a tool tip below the pointer.
%he Map window displays the $ap youre wor"in! on. (aps windows can display layers and/or
)uery results alon! with controls for $odifyin! and deletin! features.
%he Query panel displays )uery options and results for the currently selected layer.

Query Panel
%he Query Panel pro'ides tools for analy*in! and preparin! features for editin!. %he first + features that
satisfy the specified )uery the within the current Map Window e#tent are displayed in tabular for$at. %hese
results can be sorted, reor!ani*ed, and acti'ated to prepare a $ap for editin!.
Preparing Data
Before $odifyin! features with GeoEditor, you need to prepare an e#istin! feature to edit. Usin! the
the Layers panel, add any layers for 'iewin!. ,lic" on -./ Add Button and 0elect usa:population layer fro$
a'ailable layers windows. ,lic" Done Button after addin! the layer.

1nce you ha'e added the layers, you can follow a basic wor"flow.
+. 0elect into an area you would li"e to edit.
2. 0tart an edit session by e#ecutin! a feature )uery.
Area Selection
%o select an area for editin!, you first need to fra$e the data in an appropriate 'iew. 3lthou!h you can edit
data in any 'iew, it is !enerally best to select a fra$e with the $ost detail.
%here are se'eral options for selectin! your data fra$e. Use can use the pan and *oo$ tools a'ailable in
the Tools panel alon! with the control options in the Map window to position and scale an i$a!e. 4hen you
use these 5oo$ tools, each clic" or scale selection $a!nifies or reduces the i$a!e to the ne#t preset
around the current center point. 6ouble7clic"in! a point, allows you specify the center of an area you want
to $a!nify.

8or a s$ooth *oo$, you can also hold down 0hift and dra! a red rectan!le around the area you want to
$a!nify. 8or a s$ooth pan, you can use the Pan Map tool to nud!e the $ap in the direction you want to
'iew.
+sing #hi,t ey -.oo$ button on tool bar, user can dra/ a rectangle to 0oo$ particular area
Feature Query
1nce your data fra$e is set, specify the layer for $odification with the Feature Query drop down $enu.
9i!hli!htin! a layer in the Layers panel will not set this tar!et layer.
4ith the editin! layer specified, you now need to define a set of features for editin!. %he )uery
by location condition allows you to select the first + features within the current fra$e bounds. %he )uery
by attribute condition-s/ allows you to define a data set based on any attributes within the feature. %hese
two )uery cate!ories can be used separately or in tande$.
3 )uery will return table results as well as a $ap display -in oran!e/ with up to the first + features for
which the associated )uery applies.

Lets fire a )uery by attributes condition. :n the )uery ;anel, 0elect 0tates,U037;opulation as a layer and
unchec" the chec" bo# )uery by location. <ow select in the first co$bo7bo#, STATE_ABBR colu$n, E)ual
-=/ co$parison in the second co$bo7bo# and type WA in the last te#t bo# and hit the button =Query>.
With the Display on map you can toggle visibility of the entire search results, or select specific results in for
display (in blue). You can display a specific result subset with the Zoom to selected button.

Modiying Data
4ith your dataset prepared, you are now ready to $odify 'ector features and/or attribute infor$ation. %he
basic wor"flow for editin! data includes: ,hoose whether you want to create new features or $odify an
e#istin! one. 3dd or edit attributes of the feature. 0a'e edits and stop editin!.
!reating a "e# Feature
1ne of the $ost co$$on editin! tas"s is to create new features.
%o start, select the Create a new feature tool fro$ the %ools panel. 4ith this tool you can draw
a draft !eo$etry of line, point, poly!on as well a 'ertices at intersections or $idpoint. 3 draft is co$posed
of all the 'ertices or anchor points of a feature.
%o add 'ertices, position your pointer within the (ap window and clic". 8or point !eo$etries, a sin!le clic"
will create a point feature.
8or lines and poly!on !eo$etries, continue positionin! 'ertices with a sin!le clic". %o co$plete a feature
draft double clic" your $ouse. %he positioned 'ertices will create a feature of the sa$e !eo$etry type.
By default, the Create a new feature changes to the Edit existing feature tool. Here you can edit new
attribute` values. Attributes are descriptions of a geographic feature stored as a row in a table.
Modiying E$isting Features
%o start $odifyin! e#istin! features, use the Edit existing feature tool and clic" anywhere within the feature
co$ponent. A feature will now selected in draft mode for editing. Activate your editing session by clicking
the Edit button.
Res%aping
%o reshape a feature, you can select a 'erte# and dra! it to a new location. &ou can also specify a new
'erte# by clic"in! and dra!!in! a phantom 'erte#. 8or instance, you can dra! a 'erte# to restructure the
boundaries of a *one with a fish tail.
Deleting &ertices
;osition the your pointer o'er a 'erte# and press Shift-D to delete. GeoEditor i$$ediately pre'iews the
$odified feature.
Deleting Features
:n order to delete a feature fro$ the $ap and the datastore, select the Edit existing feature tool. ,lic" within
the feature you want to delete and select the Delete button in the resultin! dialo!. &ou will be pro$pted to
confir$ the feature deletion.

'nputting attributes
&ou can add or edit attributes by selectin! the te#t field. 0elect Save to apply the$ to your data source.
Sa(ing
3ny GeoEditor $odifications are te$porary until you choose to Save the$. ,ancelin! or )uittin! will not
sa'e your chan!es, nor will boo"$ar"in! a $ap docu$ent. %o write edits to a data source, you need to
specifically sa'e the edits.
