1. (10pts)
a) Use the definition of derivative to show that:
“If f is differentiable at a and , then is differentiable at a and .”
f ( a) ≠ 0 1
 1 ′ − f ′( a )
f   ( a) =
 f ( a ) 
2
f 
b) Use differentiation rules to show the same result in part (a).

1. (20pts)
The acceleration due to gravity, g, at a distance r from the center of the earth is given by
GM
g=
r2
where M is the mass of the earth and G is a constant.

a) Find the rate of change of gravity with respect to the change in distance from the center of the earth?
b) What is the practical interpretation (in terms of acceleration) of your answer in part (a)? Why would you expect it
to be negative?
c) . Calculate the value of your answer in part (a). What
3
G = 6.67 ×10−11 m , M = 6 ×1024 kg , r = 6400 km
kg ⋅ s 2
is its unit of measure?
d) Based on your answer in part (c), is it reasonable to assume that the gravity is constant at the surface of the earth?
Explain your answer.

Mandy lives 13 km south of a coffee shop. One morning, she decided to go for a jog to get her fatty mocha so she
doesn’t have to feel guilty about her addiction to fatty drinks. She jogs toward the coffee shop at a constant rate
of 9 km/hr while thinking about the man of her dream. It would be nice to marry someone who loves jogging as
much as I do, she thought to herself. Twenty minutes into her jog, her cell phone rings. It’s her friend, Jean. She
is so excited to tell Mandy about a handsome man jogging eastbound toward the coffee shop. When Mandy asks
for details, Jean says that he is about seven kilometers away, jogging at a rate of 8 km/hr. As love sparks her
interest in doing calculus, Mandy started thinking about a related rate problem. What exactly is she thinking?
Explain your answer by stating the calculus problem Mandy is thinking about and its solution.

4. (20pts)
a) Find the linear approximation for near .
ln ( 1 + x ) x=0

b) In business, the formula for annual compounded interest is ; where A is the current amount,
A = P ( 1+ x )
n

P is the initial amount, n is the number of years, and x is the interest rate. How long does it take to double
your money? Express your answer in terms of x.

c) Because you wouldn’t want to sit there and do the math like in part (b) every time a client asks you that
question. So, you always follow this “rule of 70” that your boss told you. The rule states that the time it takes
to double your money is 70 divided by the interest rate. Use part (a) and (b) to explain why this rule works.
One thing to keep in mind is .
ln 2 ≈ 0.69314

5. (20pts)
Find the 11th degree polynomial approximation near for the following functions:
x=0
I.
sin x
II.
cos x
III.
2
ex
IV.
x cos x

6. (20pts)
a) State the first derivative test.
b) State the second derivative test.
c) Use the tests above to find local extrema, inflection points, concavity, increasing and decreasing
intervals, and graph the function .
3 x 3 − 8 x 2 − 13 x + 30
f ( x) =
x2 − 4
Hint: The numerator factored to .
( x + 2 ) ( 3 x − 5) ( x − 3)
d) Find the vertical and horizontal/slanted asymptotes of f(x).
e) Graph the function.
