Lesson Plan 1

Date: September 23, 2009 Level: Second year of high school


Skill: Writing.

Expected Outcomes: Students will be able to identify the different uses of “There + Be” in both simple present and
past and will be able to apply it for writing their own sentences and questions.

Resources: White board, markers, “there + be” dialogue photocopy, pictures photocopy for the closing game.

Introduction

Take roll call 3’

Presentation of the main 7’ -I will ask each student to make a name tag and to put it on their desks so that I
class objectives. can memorize their names.
-I will explain students how we will be working for the rest of the semester.
-I will set the rules for the class to be successful.

Core of the class

There is/ there are; 5’ Explanation of the uses of there is/are and their past forms by giving examples
there was/ there were and setting grammatical rules.

Exercises 20’ Students will have to fill in a dialogue with the correct form of “There + Be”
using the past or the present tense (photocopy).

Exercises correction 5’ Students will be asked their answers to check if they understood the
explanation. By using their own mistakes I will clarify any doubt and explain
what was wrong (correct answers will be written on the board in order students
can check the spelling).

Be + There question forms 5’ “Be +There” question form will be explained by giving examples and setting
(past and present) grammatical rules.

Exercises 20’ Students will receive a picture of a nature scene and they will have to create
the corresponding questions for the given answers about the picture (on their
notebooks) using “Be + There”.

Exercises correction 8’ Students will be asked their answers orally to check if they understood the
explanation and they will be also written on the board to check spelling;
students’ mistakes will be used to clarify any doubt about the subject.

Closing

There is, There are Game 10’ Students will be divided into 8 groups of 5; each group will have to choose an
image (they have not previously seen it).
One representative of each group will have to go to the board and classify the
image into one of the two categories: “There is” or “There are”, then with the
help of the rest of her team she will have to create and write a full sentence
about the chosen image in order to get a point, the team with more points win
the contest.

Summary 7’ All together we will make a summary of all what we learned during the lesson,
in order to clarify any doubt about.
