JOB DESCRIPTION

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS WORKSHEET*

JOB TITLE: LIBRARY ASSISTANT

General Job Description: This position works directly with the public at the Circulation Desk. This position is one of two full-time positions
within the Circulation Department. The Library Assistant greets and assists library patrons, performs circulation desk functions and general
customer service as well as performing routine clerical activities.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Check library materials in and out of the library; issue library cards; empty book drops.

2. Assist library patrons in finding materials; use library equipment and computers. Answer questions and provide information to
the public in a courteous manner and timely manner.

3. Process and record overdue and damaged materials.

4. Process library materials.

5. Maintain library holds system.

6. Understand and be able to explain library policies and procedures.

7. Organize, sort and shelve materials.


8. Count money and make change; accept fines and fees, issue receipts; explain payment options to patrons.

9. Use computers and the library’s automated catalog system to provide essential services such as materials circulation,
materials processing and catalog searching.

10. Answer telephone and assist patrons over the phone and/or direct calls to the appropriate library staff.

11. Perform ongoing inventory of library materials.

12. Supervise volunteers.

13. Mend, clean or repair library materials when necessary.

14. Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to work well with people.

15. Other duties as assigned.

16. Any specific requirement stated in the “offer of employment letter”.

Marginal Job Functions: (Not fundamental but part of the job in a less important manner.)

1. Substitute for other library personnel as needed.

2. Deliver mail to other departments.

4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

Alphabetical and Dewey Decimal filing systems.

Standard safety practices.

Computers and their applications in libraries.

Methods and techniques of filing, cataloging and referencing library materials.

Operational characteristics of library equipment and tools; occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to count money and make change, use of basic mathematical principles.

Ability to:

Stand for extended periods of time; sit for short periods of time; light lifting and/or carrying (up to 40 lbs.).

Be willing and able to work as part of a team to further the mission and goals of the Ponca City Library.

Communicate clearly and effectively with library patrons and library personnel, both orally and in writing.

Operate a variety of library equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Work independently with little or no supervision.

Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with both library patrons and library personnel whom you interact with in the course
of your daily work.

Exhibit a friendly customer service attitude.


Exhibit superior work habits including dependability, responsibility, and accuracy.

Experience, Training, and Education:

Previous library experience is a plus.

Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

High school diploma or equivalent.

General knowledge and current awareness of library principles, practices, procedures, methods, materials, and philosophy.

Any applicable library-specific education is a plus.
