Structure of the Earth
S The earth has four layers:
the inner core, outer core,
mantle and crust.
S The asthenosphere is part of
the mantle
S It is where Convection
Currents occurs.
S It creates natural disaster.
Like an earthquake.

Tectonic Plates
S There are 7 main plates in the
Earth: African, North
American, South American,
Eurasian, Australian,
Antarctic, and Pacific.
S Other minor plates like the
Arabian, Nazca, and
Philippines.
S Plates are all moving in
different directions and at
different speeds (from 2 cm to
10 cm per year) in
relationship to each other.

Plate Boundaries
S Plates crash together, pull
apart, or sideswipe each other.
S A Place where the two plates
meet is called a plate
boundary.
S Divergent Boundary : Places
where plates are coming apart.
S Convergent Boundary :
Places where plates crash or
crunch together
S Transform Boundary : Places
where plates slide past each
other.

What Creates an Earthquake and
How is it Related to Tectonic
Plates?
S Tectonic Plates are constantly
moving

S Pressure builds up at some
points of the tectonic plates
boundaries

S When the pressure is too much,
the plates slip and they create an
earthquake

How Does an Earthquake Change
The Landscape When it Occurs?
S Part of living an earthquake is living with
the aftershocks, that occurs after the main
shock
S As a result of earthquakes the shape of
the countries change since mountains,
volcanoes and rifts are formed
S Roads often change their placement.
They either become uneven or just crack
S Fault valleys and troughs can be created.
They have large amounts of fracturing
S After the land has opened up, weather
begins to act on the area and erosion
follows. Slowly, new valleys are created
Why do We Need to be Prepared
for an Earthquake?
S We need to be prepared for
earthquakes so that we are safe and
dont get hurt
S You could DIE from an earthquake or
you could get badly injured
S This natural disasters destroys
homes, and kills a a lot of people
S If we are not prepared we can lose
everything
S The picture to the right is a example
of why we need to be prepared

Why do We Need to be Prepared
for an Earthquake?
S This is something that you will
need to be prepared
S It is the safest way to be prepared

How Are That Some Earthquakes
Are Bigger Than Others?
S Some earthquakes we dont
feel, (Picture to the left)
S Some earthquakes are
really destructive (Picture to
the right)

engineering-using-the-nxt-for-earthquake-simulation/
How Are That Some Earthquakes
Are Bigger Than Others?
S Some earthquakes store up a
lot of pressure and energy witch
make it stronger or weaker
S Tectonic plates some times
slide smoothly witch create
small tremors
S Sometimes they bash strongly
witch create LARGE
earthquakes

Why do Earthquakes React As
Plastic Bands?
S The more you stretch the the
plastic band the more energy it
stores
S When you let go it will fling like
a bullet
S When you release the band it
will barley move and fall
S If you stretch it a lot it will go
flying away

Why do Earthquakes React As
Plastic Bands
S The energy stores in the plastic
band and it releases power full
energy, making it shake.

How Do Earthquakes Change the
Planet
S Some time they make the ground break
S They cause 10,000 deaths a year

S They knock down buildings
S They can let you take some good looks
in the earth with the cracks

disasters/how-earthquakes-work
Do Earthquakes Effect Other
Natural Disasters
S They can cause tsunamis

S They cause volcanic eruptions
S They can make wild fires
S Earthquakes can cause landslides
S They also can cause floods by
breaking dams

What do People Think of
Earthquakes
GOOD
S If there are no earthquakes the earth
would be dry and dead
S They can let you get deeper in to the
earth
S They can let you see more minerals
deep down in the earth

BAD
S They can destroy homes
S There's a chance it could kill you

Why Do Earthquakes Only
Happen in Few Countries and Not
in All of Them?
S Earthquakes only happen in
few countries
S Earthquakes happen near
tectonic plates boundaries
S Countries or cities that are not
near tectonic plates boundaries
dont have earthquakes

Why Do Earthquakes Only
Happen in Few Countries and Not
in All of Them?
S Earthquakes happen all around
the world but they usually
happen near tectonic plates
boundaries
S Earthquakes usually happen in
the ring of fire

6199/earthquake
Are Earthquakes Related to
Tectonic Plates?
S Yes because tectonic plates
create earthquakes
S Tectonic plates slide against
each other and they make
earthquakes
S When a earthquake happens in
the ocean it might create a
tsunami
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1659695/Haiti-
earthquake-of-2010
Are Earthquakes Related to
Tectonic Plates?
S Tectonic plates float on the
mantle so when they move they
get caught against each other
S When they get caught against
each other pressure builds and
that energy that comes out
makes the earthquake
S Earthquakes can cause lots of
damage or little damage
