Note: Im dedicating this post to all those who have loved and lost and those who have found true love.
I rst saw the ofcial trailer of Starting Over Again when I watched Bride For Rent (starring Kim Chiu and
Xian Lim) in January 2014. The minute I saw the full trailer, I knew that it was worth watching. Not that
Im a fan of Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga (but yes, Ive watched ALMOST all of their movies), BUT
because this was directed by master storyteller Olivia M. Lamasan. Ms. Lamasan was also the director
of blockbuster lms Milan (2004) and In My Life (2009). Starting Over Again was rst seen in major
Philippine cinemas on February 12, 2014. The cast includes Piolo Pascual (Marco Villanueva III), Toni
Gonzaga (Ginny Gonzales), and Iza Calzado (Patricia / Patty de Guia).

I have said before in one of my Facebook posts that this movie does not usually suit the audiences
palate (In this post, I vow to answer the questions Ive posted, dahil hindi ko na matiis!!!). This movie
does not have a typical happy ending where the lead male gets the lead female, they get married, and
then they live happily ever after. The movie puts to a light a whole new meaning on starting over again,
true love, and happy endings. It teaches us how the foundations of strong relationships are built and
how they truly last.
So there. Here are some of my insights and lessons Ive learned from the movie. Id like to shed light on
the three main characters, Ginny, Marco, and Patty.
1. Genuine Ginny?

Ginny : Oh next year, happy anniversary na yan ha!
I dont know if you guys noticed this, but the basis of Ginnys love for Marco wasnt really clear to me.
Heck, I dont even know if what shes feeling for Marco was genuine love or infatuation.
Was it even infatuation? The movie started with Ginny shouting I love you Sir Marco! at the top of her
lungs in different parts of the campus. The movie doesnt say how Ginnys admiration for Marco began,
or the reasons for it. They didnt start out as friends. In fact, Sir Marco didnt even like student Ginny at
the beginning (she was so pushy, to the point of being malandi.). What qualities did Marco have for
someone like Ginny to like him? It wasnt clear whether hes a gentleman or a really good professor. All
we know is that he is good-looking.
It helps to note that Ginny didnt have a solid relationship with her father. There was even a scene where
Marco asked Ginny to tell him one of her secrets. She answered in somewhat this way (note : not
verbatim), Yung totoo? Minsan iniisip ko sana iba na lang yung tatay ko. Yung matapang at matatag
ang loob. (The truth? Sometimes I wish that I have a different father. Someone whos strong enough to
stand up for us).
I think that Ginny was looking for a father gure. Marco was her scapegoat from her life of
disappointments. Thats why it is really important for fathers to have good relationships with their
daughters so they know what it really means to be loved by a man, and not to go around looking for love
in just any man around them.
So why did Ginny leave Marco in the rst place, if her love for him was genuine? She may have loved
Marco, but not as much for her to forgive him of his shortcomings. Remember Ginnys explanation for
leaving:
NATAKOT ako nung nakita kong nagiging kagaya ka na ng tatay ko. (I was AFRAID that you were
turning out to be like my father).
If Ginny was scared of a future with Marco, Patty (Iza Calzado) said, There is no fear in love.
2. Mature Marco?

Ginny and Marco cooking in kitchen, C-O-O-K-I-N-G
(in sing-song voice)
I have my own denition of maturity. Maturity, for me, is the time when you reached the point wherein
you have blossomed enough to know and accept that life is not a bed of roses and learned to live with it.
It is like saying that you have grown enough to be pulled out of your comfort zone. Well, I know that
maturity comes with age, but it is not something automatic. In Marcos case, I think his maturity is
questionable at the beginning of the story. Here are some points why:
- It is clear that Marcos passion is in cooking. I think he settled as a college professor just because
everyone in his family did (Remember the scene where Marcos grandma toured Ginny around the
house for her thesis in architecture?), and not because he really wanted to.
- Really Marco? Fall in love with a young student at this day and age? (Im not saying that this doesnt
happen, but, wala na bang iba?) Are you so insecure that you cannot approach females your age and
settle for pushy crush-stricken kolehiyalas?
- There was a scene in Marco and Ginnys eatery where Ginny asked Marco when does he plan to nish
his culinary degree. He jokingly said that it is not that important and that he could just put his money in
more important things. Isnt nishing school important? In Ginnys defense, how do you plan to start your
own family?
- Do you agree with me that when someone breaks up with you, there is some part in you that knows
the reason why and it is hard to admit that it is partly your fault? When Marco was trashing around his
room, did he even think of putting himself in Ginnys shoes? Did he even try to analyze where he had
gone wrong at some point? Did he even think that leaving for Barcelona might be good for Ginnys
career too? Ahem, sounds selsh to me
- When Marco proposed to Ginny, did he do it purely out of love OR because hes scared that she might
pursue leaving for Spain, AND HIM, for good?
HERE COMES THE PATTY LINE AGAIN. Patty said, There is no fear in love. There is no fear in
mature persons in love. If Marco was mature enough, he would be bold enough to nish culinary and let
Ginny take up her masters in Spain with no hesitations (Marco, meron tayong tinatawag na two-way
ight, Skype, Instagram, Facebook, kahit magkalayo kayo ni Ginny parang hindi na rin).

I think that the break up did Marco good because it gave him a chance to pick up his life, reorganize his
priorities, and eventually succeed in a career that he really loves.
(Im beginning to think that Patty is an endorser of the brand No Fear hehehehe.)

3. Precious Patty (and the boiling water).
Patty is precious because she holds the tipping point in the story. I dont know if you would agree with
me, but even before the movie ended, I secretly wished that Marco and Patty would eventually end up
together. I think it is wise to note that the production team downplayed Ms. Calzados beauty in the
movie, she was dressed and styled so simple (almost always in plain white tops and simple cut jeans),
as compared to Ms. Gonzaga in her sharp dresses and killer heels, but yes, she does look like Mama
Mary haha. Patty stole the scene from Ginny in the most unexpectable manner, not because of how
she looks (her looks are simpler as compared to Ginny), not because of her accomplishments as a chef
(her adventures as a chef are not highlighted as the movie repeatedly wants us to think how good an
architect Ginny is), BUT BECAUSE OF HER GREAT AND TRUE LOVE FOR MARCO. I think that is the
focal point of the story; for the audience to eventually realize that Patty is precious because her love
conquered Marcos faults and mistakes.
Thumbs up to Patty because:
- She is mature enough to let Marco choose Ginny to be the architect of their restaurant. Yes, she was
also somewhat jealous, but not so much for her to return immediately to the Philippines after her New
York stint.
- Her relationship with Marco started when they were friends. Probably when Marco was still trying to put
back the pieces of his broken heart. She probably knows all the weaknesses and tiniest dirt on Marco
and accepts it all with grace and open arms. Now thats true love.
- Did I say that Patty is an endorser of No Fear clothing? Joke lang!!! Her love is seless because she
doesnt fear leaving Marco in the hands of Ginny in the Philippines and continue her work in New York.
She also knows that as a good architect, Ginny would probably do good for their restaurant (and that
also includes their staff). As compared to Ginny who didnt even think about the nancial implications of
her runabouts and indecisiveness with Marco to the architecture company she started with her friends,
Beb and Baba (Did you notice this too? Did you also think that the restaurant project was probably a
waste of time for Ginny and her friends?), AS LONG AS she has Marco wrapped around her nger.

- If Patty had a selsh love for Marco, she wouldnt have told Marco to choose between her and Ginny in
the most calm manner in the hospital, even telling him that Kaya ko naman eh, basta mamili ka lang.
Kung siya, siya. Kung ako, ako. My love for you is greater than your failures and mistakes. Who wouldnt
want to have a Precious Patty of their own?
- This is my favorite part. The heart stopping conversation of Patty and Ginny in the kitchen. The part
where there was a boiling pot in between them. I would like to think Ginnys dialogue Ay, hinaan
natin yung apoy, kumukulo na yung tubig, (Lets put the re on low, the water is already boiling.) was
there for a special reason. It just exemplied how Patty overcomes her emotions and how she remains
cool, calm, and collected in times of confrontations like the one they had (Imagine being told that your
special someone had an affair with another person!). If it were in normal situations, a person who have
been pushed too far like Patty could have splashed the boiling water on Ginny just to get back at her.
But she didnt. Instead she tried to sympathize with Ginny when she said Siguro ang lungkot lungkot ng
buhay mo. (You must be really lonely), and she even told Ginny to be thankful that she had that kind
of passionate love with Marco, whereas hers started in the most boring way, as friends (In Pattys own
words.). I think that Patty has so much love in her that she was able to try to understand what Ginny was
going through as well. And that was where she won the ght, with her famous parting line, There is no
fear in love.
So there. I know most of you were hoping for a different ending. Isnt moving on from the past a happy
ending? If Ginny didnt leave for Barcelona, do you think she would really be happy? For Marco, isnt
having a Patty the happiest ending? Someone who would love you and expect nothing in return?
And last but not the least. Something for you to think about. Do you really think that Ginny would
continue pursuing Marco if he didnt turn out a successful chef? (Remember her line, You are the Marco
I hoped you to be. )
