OUR FAMILY
Morris Anderson Haiyupis Sutherland, known as Moy Sr., was born in Ahousaht in 1951 - a very
good year, as that is also the year that potlatches became legal in the eyes of the Federal
Government. Moy is a man who holds and practices many teachings with strong ties to his Nuu-
Chah-Nulth culture. Moy’s carving skills enable him to explore his goals and passions – to tie
culture and education together in working towards cultural and environmental conservation. Moy
along with four other family members is presenting the exhibit, Our Family, at the Rollin Art Centre
Gallery until Wed. Apr. 2, Tues. to Sat., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission to the gallery!
Wheelchair accessible.
LA CANDELA
Traditional Cuban music isn’t easy to tackle. The songs are full of competing rhythms and the
energy required to bring these tunes to life can result in gigs that are more like endurance tests.
La Candela plays its own original tunes but also favours songs from Compay Segundo and Elias
Ochoa, two of Buena Vista Social Club’s key members. La Candela, Cuban music at it’s best,
plays at the Capitol Theatre, Fri. Mar. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 adult, $14 senior/student
and are available at Rollin Art Centre and Echo Centre (cards accepted) and Somass Drugs (cash
only). ALL tickets at the door are $18 (cash only).
FILM FEST
Starting off the Spring 2009 Film Fest is the film The Kite Runner. The film begins with a young
boy named Amir and his best friend Hassan. Amir struggles to succeed in his father’s eyes and
sets out to win his father’s affection by competing in a kite-running tournament. When Amir wins
and his kite is the last in the sky, Hassan goes to retrieve the final downed kite as a trophy for his
friend, tragedy ensues, setting off a chain reaction of life-changing events for both boys. The Kite
Runners plays at the Paramount Theatre, Wed. Mar. 19, 7 p.m. only. The other two films in the
series are The Diving Bell and the Butterfly on Apr. 16 and The Stone Angel on May 21st. Tickets
are available at Rollin Art Centre and the museum.
