The concerted effort by city officials to revive both of
the city-owned harbors is beginning to reap dividends,
as more boaters flock to the facilities to keep their crafts
during the boating season.
We currently have 102 boat wells at Lac Ste. Clair,
parks and recreation department Director Greg Esler
said. Were up 28 from this same time last year.
The increase comes on the heels of less-than-stellar
seasons of late, but the turnaround is the result of hard
work and effort on the part of Esler, his staff, and others.

Harbor rentals
on the rise

The summer months are
fast approaching and with
the warming temperatures
comes the opportunity for
residents to revel in the
sunshine, picnic, or enjoy
one of the many activities
taking place within parks
scattered throughout the
city.
Its the first of many
picnics for me and kids,
said St. Clair Shores resi-
dent Marianna Kulich.
We really enjoy the set-
ting, and it gives us the
ability to enjoy the lake
too.
The city parks, and
there are more than a doz-
en ranging from small
neighborhood parks such
as Gafke Park and
Blackburn Park, to large
parks such as Brys Park
and Veterans Memorial,
are a hub in the summer-
time for residents.
Were proud of the
parks we have in St. Clair
Shores, Parks and
Recreation Director Greg
Esler said. Our guys work
very hard to maintain
them and make them as
nice as possible so families
can really enjoy them. Not
every city can offer this to
their residents and were
proud that we can.
The parks themselves
arent the only things the
department offers resi-
dents. A slew of specially
designed programs and
activities are all on the
slate for the summer
months and beyond.
Weve added a couple
of new things at the pool
this year, he said. Were
really excited about these
things, and think residents
will really like them.
The new programs at
the pool include Lap
Swimming, Parent & Tot
classes and Senior Water
Aerobics. All this goes
along with the water slide,
of course, Esler said.
Step One is a program
that kicks off Monday,
June 16, and focuses on fit-
ness for all levels.
One of the things Ive
really been working on,
and I was talking to other
parks and rec. directors
throughout the state, is
Duke University research
I read about, Esler said.

The work is nearly do-
ne.
The finishing touches
and last-minute adjust-
ments are really all that
remain for organizers of
the 62nd Annual St.
Clair Shores Memorial
Day Parade.
The lineup of floats,
bands, distinguished
guests, and honorees in-
cludes veterans from the
famed Normandy inva-
sion, marching bands
from each of the citys
three high schools, city
and state officials, clubs,
schools and much more.
In fact, this years pa-
rade features more than
160 separate entries.
Theres actually a lit-
tle less than last year
participant-wise, said
St. Clair Shores Parade
Committee Chairwoman
Cheryl Furdos. Last
year was the biggest pa-
rade weve ever had, so
this year we did trim it a
little bit.
This years parade,
which gets started at 1
p.m. Sunday, May 25,
along Harper Avenue
between 9 and 11 mile
roads, has something for
everyone to enjoy,
Furdos said.
We have over 25 mu-
sical entries, she said.
Weve got over 40 mili-
tary and veteran entries,
and we have beauty
queens. Weve got Rich
Luterman and Amy
Andrews from Fox 2
television station. Were
going to have Martha
Reeves and Thorneta
Davis, and those are just
a few things. Weve got
something for everyone
to enjoy.
Furdos said that if last
year was any indication
of crowd size, then she
expects more than
100,000 spectators to
line Harper Avenue this
year.
Last year we had
about that, and were
hoping to get that many
people and more this
year, she said. Its a lot
of people so I would sug-
gest that people arrive
early.
The police department
begins closing off the
streets for the parade
about 11:30 a.m., she
said, and there are no
designated parking lots
for the event.
The streets will be
closing, Furdos said.
Theres no specific
parking areas for the
general crowd, so peo-
ple usually park at the
side streets along
Harper and walk. But
once the police start
closing the roads lead-
ing to those side streets
then people are going to
have to park further
away and walk to
Harper. So, its a good
idea to try and be there
by 11:30 a.m.
Restaurants and many
of the businesses along
Harper will be open pri-
or to the parade, Furdos
said, for people to shop
or grab a bite to eat.

Floats, marching bands and distinguished guests are once again going to be part
of the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade.
Each year, hundreds of people come
to Blossom Heath Park for the
American Cancer Societys Relay For
Life event.
This year, St. Clair Shores residents
are scheduled to arrive by the hundreds
once again, said American Cancer
Society Relay For Life Specialist Amy
Howard.
Right now weve got about 20 teams
signed up, and about 250 people, she
said. But its not too late for other peo-
ple to sign up yet. The more people we
have the more money we raise.
The 24-hour event takes its first step
at noon, Friday, May 30, in Blossom

be transformed into a mecca of hope,
remembrance and celebration.

We have food trucks
there, a place for kids to
get their faces painted,
lots of fun things,
Furdos said. Its a great
place to bring the kids
to.
This years theme is
Honor. Freedom.
Family, and Furdos said
the committee focused
on these principles.
This is what the pa-
rade is all about, she
said.
I really think its good
publicity, he said. What
weve done is really work
at getting the word out
through advertising, word
of mouth, promotions like
refer-a-friend. I think peo-
ple are going down there
now, and were taking the
time and due diligence to
give them great customer
service. Were explaining
to them about the ameni-
ties and just how much
they really get when they
become a part of this.
Advertising campaigns
that include a commercial,
print ads and a social me-
dia presence are part of the
plan a plan that also in-
cludes the formation of a
Boati ng Advi sory
Committee and an updat-
ed website.
We have a lot of ameni-
ties which are really good,
Esler said. The pool, for
example, is something that
people cant get anywhere
else. No one has the
Olympic-size pool like we
do. We just have a lot of
amenities for people. We
just are making an effort to
get that word out there.
A family pool pass is in-
cluded with each boat well,
Esler said.
There have also been
numerous improvements
to the facility itself, such as
repainting , repairs and re-
placements of items rang-
ing from doors and door-
ways, to lightbulbs and
dock boards, as well as up-
grades to locker room
benches and bulletin
boards at the facility, just to
name a few items on the
list.
The improvement in
boat well rentals is even
more significant to Esler
given the realities of the in-
dustry.
Its a challenge, he
said. Quite frankly, there
are more boat slips than
there are boaters now. But
were doing everything we
can.
Proof of this effort is in
the numbers.
Weve already reached
the revenue part of what
we made last year for the
Lac Ste. Clair boat wells,
he said. And thats key.
Were hoping we can im-
prove on that, and we con-
tinue to keep working on
that.
The incentives and mar-
keting will continue, Esler
said, for this season and
beyond.
Were going to keep
running the incentives, he
said. And were going to
do that right up until July
15. Thats when the boat
wells are going to be half-
off.

Theres no way to dis-
guise it running a suc-
cessful senior center re-
quires funds.
With this thought in
mind, leaders at the St.
Clair Shores Senior
Center for Active Adults
have come up with a cre-
ative fundraising cam-
paign that not only helps
to satisfy some of the fi-
nancial needs of the cen-
ter, but also helps satisfy
the belly of people all over
the area.
The senior center is of-
fering one of the trendiest
and most delicious food
items around.
Senior Activities
Director Sue Fickau said
the idea stems from her
love of a particular televi-
sion show.
Im a fanatic watcher of
the show Shark Tank,
she said. In February, I
saw this woman try and
sell her pancake mix on
the show. So, I tried to go
to her website to try and
order some and it actually
shut down, because so
many people were trying
to get on to it.
The site Fickau was try-
ing to access was south-
ernculturefoods.com.
After following them on
Facebook, she realized the
company could really ben-
efit the center.
I found out that they
launched a fundraising
program, she said. I
jumped on the phone with
them and got in touch with
her and her brother, who
operate the whole thing.
They worked with us, gave
us a deal, and now weve
got them here.
What the center is offer-
ing is Shortstacks Waffle
and Pancake Mix, a pow-
dered mix than comes in a
variety of flavors, nine of
which are available at the
center.
The product lasts a
year," Fickau said. All you
need is a few other ingre-
dients to make them. It
definitely is a specialty
product, but we thought it
would be a great gift idea.
And, theyre really good
tasting too.
A container of the mix is
$8, Fickau said, and it
makes 12 pancakes or
four waffles.
We bought 252 contain-
ers in nine flavors, Fickau
said. And were going to
be selling it until weve
sold the last one.
For more information,
or to purchase a container
of the mix, call (586) 445-
0996 or go to the center
20000 Stephens Road,
next to Civic Arena.

THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 3A
In 2013, the official count was 999
children taking part in the St. Clair
Shores Public Librarys Summer
Reading Club program.
This years program is called Fizz,
Boom, Read!
Of course, we want to get over that
1,000 mark, Youth Services Librarian
Dale Humeston said. That would be
great.
Whether the program attracts 10,000
or 1,000 children, the success isnt nec-
essarily measured in the numbers, but
rather the joy the children get from
opening a book, and the fun reading
can be for children of all ages.
Its such a fun program for children,
from babies to teens, everyone can be a
part of the club she said. We have par-
ents who read to their young children,
and independent readers, and we have
teen readers also. Its all a part of what
makes the program so wonderful, real-
ly.
The Summer Reading Club is spon-
sored by The Friends of the St. Clair
Shores Library, and the premise is a
straightforward one children read
books (or have them read to them) dur-
ing the summer months for a chance to
win a slew of great prizes, Humeston
said.
Weve got LEGO sets and cutouts of
Darth Vadar and Spiderman, she said.
And those are just a few of the many
prizes weve got this year. We want to
make sure these kids are reading in the
summer, and this is a great way to do
that. Its very exciting.
Along with the chance to win, every
Tuesday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m.,
club members are treated to a special
presentation at the library.
These Terrific Tuesday programs
begin June 10, and allow children to ex-
perience the wonders of science
through stories, crafts, games and spe-
cial entertainers.
The Terrific Tuesday programs are
really something, she said. Weve got
some professional entertainers coming
in this summer, and lots of fun experi-
ments for the children to take part in,
too.
The Fizz. Boom. Read! 2014 program
officially gets underway at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, June 3, at the library with the
programs Open House event, but regis-
tration is already open.
You can register right now,
Humeston said. And you can register
right up until July 25. There is no
charge to join the club at all either.
A corps of teen volunteers help make
the program possible, Humeston said,
and this dedicated bunch work very
hard to make the program a success.
We have as many as 45 or so teens
helping out, she said. And weve had a
few as 24, but they are very important to
this program. Very important. We
wouldnt be able to do it without them.
The program has a website (scsli-
brary.org/src2014.html) with a slew of
information about the program on it,
Humeston said.
And I also think people should check
out the commercial on the website too,
she said. Its very good and it really ex-
plains what its all about.

Im just having so much fun,
Rodgers Elementary School stu-
dent Casey Smith said. I cant be-
lieve it.
Smith, along with her second-
grade classmates at Rodgers
Elementary School were part of a
unique and creative program last week.
Im the co-owner of Right Brain
Projects in the Artists Lounge, said
Wendy Fournier, whose company came
to the school last week for the program.
We focus on right-brain activities, so
we activate the right side of the brain
through painting mainly.
The program put brushes, paint and a
blank canvas in front of Cheri
Leszczynskis second-grade students
and before long each were beginning to
create a painting for Mothers Day.
The kids love it, Leszczynski said.
They just really light up when they can
see what theyre creating.
The reaction is similar regardless of
the school, Fournier said.
The reaction is always positive, she
said. Theyre able to express them-
selves in a way they dont always get the
chance to do. Theyre challenged as
well. Theyre often impressed with
themselves. They didnt know they
could do this.
Over the course of the program, stu-
dents created a painting depicting a
vase of flowers, complete with a person-
alized message on the painting just for
mom.
You get to see the creativity come
out, Fournier said. You see how their
right brain is working, and how some
kids have these vibrant and colorful
paintings and others dont. Either way,
its a huge confidence-builder for the
kids. Many of them didnt know they
could draw or paint. Plus, its fun for
them too.
At the end of the session, each stu-
dent proudly displayed their master-
piece and placed it on a cart to dry.
I think its beautiful, Vance Rutledge
said of his painting. I really like what I
did.

L
ast Friday I
accidentally
iPhone texted
back to my
daughter the
word constipation in-
stead of constellation.
The text concerned how
crabby we both felt
that day and maybe it
had something to do
with the solar system.
Both words made
sense of the sentence in
the text sent, but com-
pletely changed the
meaning of the mes-
sage. The mistake was
corrected with a con-
stellation, LOL, texted
back. But it was, and is,
embarrassing.
I dont know about
you, but this happens to
me often. My iPhone
keyboard is tiny, so I set
it to automatically cor-
rect words in text mes-
sages and e-mails.
Its bizarre how often
my typing is replaced
with a word that gives
an entirely different
meaning to the message
sent.
For example, I was re-
cently searching for
something in my Google
e-mail archives when I
came across an e-mail
sent more than a year
ago to my daughter's
soon-to-be mother-in-
law. I opened the e-mail
to reminisce because it
was in response to the
wedding shower she
had given in honor of
my daughter.
The e-mail message
sent from my iPhone
should have read: ...I
am excited now. It was
accidentally sent as ...I
am enlightened now.
LOL I never knew
it was sent like that.
Sometimes, in iPhone
messages, the smiley
face, :), can be acciden-
tally sent upsidedown
as a frowning face, :( .
Last winter, I stayed
overnight at my moms
house during the Polar
Vortex in case the water
pipes froze. At night my
sister texted me, How
are you and mom do-
ing? I typed back We
are doing good. Its so
cold!
She messaged back:
Is everything OK? I
typed Yes 'frowning
face' , and gasped in
exaggerated horror as I
quickly corrected and
changed the :( with a :)
before hitting send.
A message to one of
my daughters about go-
ing to iHop after mass
last Mothers Day read
going to Ohio a not
so long ago relevant
place to go.
From now on Im go-
ing to try to make the
texts as short as possi-
ble and use quick, short
responses, as my one
daughter sometimes
does as k.
Sometimes texting
and e-mailing can unin-
tentionally read rude, at
best. It's a quick way to
communicate, but
haste makes waste.

Heading into the home stretch of the 2014 campaign, the South Lake girls' soccer
squad sits comfortably atop the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division.
Lake Shore girls soft-
ball team stretched its
league-winning streak to
six with another double-
header sweep last week.
The Shorians beat
LAnse Creuse North 8-3
in the opener and 12-2 in
the nightcap to improve
to 6-2 in the Macomb
Area Conference White
Division.
It also pushed the
Shorians winning streak
to eight.
In the opener, Sarah
Ratledge pitched seven
innings, earning the win
and striking out two.
Mackenzie Nemitz
was 2-for-4 with three
RBIs and Andrea Rico
was 3-for-3 with two
RBIs and one run.
Jordyn Dunlap was
3-for-4 with two runs
scored, and Natalie
Stepanenko was 2-for-4
with two runs and two
doubles.
Rico pitched six strong
innings in the second
game, striking out two
and giving up only four
hits to earn the victory.
Offensively, Nemitz
was 3-for-4, while Jordan
Miller was 2-for-3.
Another standout was
Natalie VanDerHaegen,
who was 2-for-4.
Lake Shore scored 10
runs in the fifth inning to
turn a 2-1 deficit into an
11-2 lead. Stepanenko
walked and scored the
clinching run on a wild
pitch.
Lake Shore ended its
winning streak with a
6-4 loss to Sterling
Heights Stevenson.
The Shorians jumped
out to a 4-0 lead after the
first inning, but the
Titans rallied to score
the final six runs of the
game.
Miller was 2-for-3 with
an RBI and Nemitz was
1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Lake Shore is 12-8
overall after starting the
season 0-4.

As this years open-wa-
ter fishing season gets
started, the Department
of Natural Resources
Fisheries Division per-
sonnel will again be visit-
ing lakes, rivers and
Great Lakes ports to col-
lect data about anglers
fishing excursions.
DNR sport fishing
clerks are stationed at
boat launches and piers,
asking returning anglers
questions about their
fishing trips. The
clerks will collect infor-
mation on trip length, tar-
get species and number
of fish caught. In some
cases, they may ask to
measure or weigh fish
and to take scale samples.
These efforts are part of
the DNRs Statewide
Angler Survey Program,
a long-term monitoring
program designed to
track recreational fisher-
ies across Michigans wa-
ters of the Great Lakes.
This is one of the most
comprehensive angler
survey programs in the
country, with DNR clerks
interviewing about
50,000 anglers in most
years.
This program helps us
gather information that is
critical in managing the
states fisheries, said
Tracy Kolb, DNR fisher-
ies biologist.

way it is now with child-
hood obesity, that its go-
ing to cost the American
taxpayers $14 billion. So
we came up with this Step
One program.
Step One is a walking
program the department
is implementing this year.
It, along with the
Playground Program, is
aimed at getting children
active.
We teamed up with
Danielle Cannon at
Balance Spa and Pilates
Studio, and Michelle
Sands, he said. Theyre
going to help with the pro-
grams this year, and this
will get the kids active.
Esler said the Step One
program isnt just for kids,
either.
Anybody can do it, he
said. In fact, we encour-
age everyone to come out
and be a part of it. Its for
all ages and all fitness lev-
els. We just want to get
people active and moving
and getting healthy.
The citys highly touted
Special Needs Summer
Playground Program is
also gearing up for anoth-
er year, Esler said.
Were very proud of
that, he said.
Along with this, Esler
and his staff also throw a
party at Veterans
Memorial Park in the
form of free concerts ev-
ery Wednesday night be-
ginning June 11. The
shows feature some of the
areas top bands and are
open to everyone.
Theres 10 concerts
this year, he said. And I
think weve got a great
mix of bands. Those are
always fun, and the peo-
ple really enjoy them.
And, for fishing fans,
the department is bring-
ing back the Monster
Quest Bass Fishing
Tournament to the waters
of Lake St. Clair.
Although the exact details
are not ironed out yet,
Esler said, they should be
finalized very soon.
I think weve got some
really exciting things for
people this summer, he
said. Whether youre a
kid or an adult, there are
lots of things going on
and lots of things to do
and enjoy.

said. There will be rows
of people selling all kinds
of things in order to raise
even more money for the
event. Weve got so many
things scheduled, too.
Theres a survivors cele-
bration and lap between
5-7 p.m., a Luminaria
Ceremony in honor of
those we have lost to can-
cer, a Caregivers Lap and
a Fight Back Ceremony,
not to mention the
Opening Ceremony
which will feature radio
hosts Allison and Blaine.
Those are just some of
the things planned.
The event is also a very
emotionally charged
event, with many partici-
pants touched by cancer
in some way.
The Relay For Life is a
celebratory thing,
Howard said. But there
is a lot of remembrance of
those weve lost to cancer,
and we honor them. Its
about people fighting
cancer, people who have
survived cancer, and this
can be a very emotional
thing.
The emotion is all part
of the event, however,
and for many putting to-
gether a team is part of
the way they can support
the fight.
You can participate as
one person or put togeth-
er a team, she said. And
those teams can be as
small as two people or as
big as, well, as many as
you want. No matter how
many people you come
with, youre helping to
fight cancer by being a
part of it.
Howard said the com-
munity is also welcome to
attend the event and sup-
port the participants.
We encourage the
community to come, she
said.

1B AUTOMOTIVE | 2-3B BOATING | 3-5B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014
utomotive tech-
nology is bursting
with energy. From
Apple CarPlay to
an invisible front-
car view of the road, a
myriad of ideas has left
no one bored.
Heres another sample
of the worlds automakers
latest technology offer-
ings:
Self-cleaning
Nissan in Europe has
begun tests on innovative
paint technology, Ultra-
Ever Dry, that repels mud,
rain and everyday dirt
drivers may never have to
clean their cars again.
Nissan is the first auto-
maker to apply the tech-
nology, marketed and sold
by UltraTech International
Inc., on automotive body-
work. By creating a pro-
tective layer of air between
the paint and environ-
ment, it effectively stops
standing water and road
spray from creating dirty
marks on the cars surface.
According to Nissan, the
coating has responded
well to common use cases
including rain, spray, frost,
sleet and standing water.
Nissan may use the coat-
ing technology as a future
aftermarket option.
Chevrolet Equinox
Fuel Cell
General Motors fleet of
hydrogen-powered
Chevrolet Equinox Fuel
Cell vehicles, launched in
2007 as part of Project
Driveway, have accumu-
lated more than 3 million
miles of real-world driving
with a fleet of 119-vehicles.
Since then, more than
5,000 drivers have provid-
ed feedback on the func-
tionality and drivability of
fuel cell technology.
Some individual vehi-
cles have accumulated
more than 120,000 miles.
By GMs estimate, using
hydrogen to power these
vehicles, the fleet has
avoided 157,894 gallons of
gasoline consumption.
Hydrogen fuel cell
technology is an important
part of GMs advanced
propulsion portfolio and
we continue to make sub-
stantial progress in fur-
thering this technology,
said Charlie Freese, exec-
utive director of GMs
global fuel cell engineer-
ing activities. These vehi-
cles have operated
through seven full winters
and a wide range of envi-
ronmental conditions,
proving that fuel cells can
meet the demands of real-
world drivers.
GM is an acknowledged
leader in fuel cell technol-
ogy. According to The
Clean Energy Patent
Growth Index, GM ranked
No. 1 in total fuel cell pat-
ents granted in 2013, and
continues to lead.
2014 CES Toyota
Concept Fuel Cell
Toyotas Concept Fuel
Cell Vehicle represents
years of research, engi-
neering ingenuity and
road testing, as it prepares
to launch a fuel cell sedan
in 2015.
Toyotas hydrogen fuel
cells are just one part of
Toyotas alternative fuel
portfolio, which includes
pure battery electric vehi-
cles, plug-in hybrids and
conventional gas-electric
hybrids.
Fuel cells combine hy-
drogen with the oxygen in
the air to produce electrici-
ty that powers electric
drive motors. The only
exhaust byproduct is
water vapor, making the
fuel cell vehicle a zero
emissions vehicle.
According to Toyota, the
target range of a sedan-
based fuel cell vehicle is
300 miles. Pricing will be
announced close to the ve-
hicle on-sale date in 2015.

2B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014
Lake St. Clair is a hub in
the community, a place for
boaters and lake-lovers to
meet, celebrate, and enjoy
a natural resource that is
unique to southeastern
Michigan.
Families come to beach-
es all along the shoreline.
They come to boat launch-
es and marinas from as far
south as the Grosse
Pointes, to as far north as
New Baltimore and even
beyond.
They come to fish, sun-
bathe, and relish in the
lake breezes.
For decades, communi-
ties all along the lakes
coast have centered festi-
vals and events around
Lake St. Clair and that tra-
dition continues in 2014.
Heres a quick rundown
of a few of the many festi-
vals and events slated to
take place in lakefront
communities.
What:50th Annual Bay-
Rama Fishfly Festival
When: June 18-22
Where: New Baltimore
The Skinny: The Fishfly
festival is a staple of the
summer months in
Macomb County and in-
cludes everything from
fireworks, to a cardboard
boat regatta, a Wii dance
contest, to a parade. For
more information go to
bay-rama.com
What: St. Clair Shores
First State Bank St. Clair
Shores Fireworks
Extravaganza
When: Friday, June 27
Where: Veterans
Memorial Park in St. Clair
Shores
The Skinny: One of the
largest fireworks extrava-
ganzas in the entire area,
the fireworks show at-
tracts thousands of pyro-
technic fans and features
a concert, a picnic setting,
and food vendors for pa-
trons. Gates open in the
afternoon with the show
beginning about 10 p.m.
What: Metro Beach
Fireworks Show
When: Wednesday, July
2
Where: Metro Beach in
Harrison Township
The Skinny: The show
is slated to get underway
about 10 p.m., but the fes-
tivities begin beforehand
with a concert from the
Motor City Brass Band.
What: AquaPalooza
When: July 26-27
Where: Off the shores
of Belle Maer Harbor in
Harrison Township
The Skinny: The festi-
val is literally for boaters
only. The only way to at-
tend is via the waterways
and for two days this festi-
val treats boaters to mu-
sic, sun and fun.

The Monster Quest bass fishing tournament is returning to the waters of Lake St. Clair this summer.
It isnt a secret to any-
one who has ever dropped
a fishing line in the waters
of Lake St. Clair the
fishing is fantastic.
More than that, howev-
er, are the men and wom-
en who fish the waters.
Young and old, sea-
soned and fresh, the lake
attracts all kinds of char-
acters, each one with an-
gling advice, opinions and
fish tales to offer freely to
anyone who will listen.
Its the best overall
fishing lake Ive ever
known, Samir Khalil, 58,
said. I should know, too.

enough to fish all over the
country. Its my passion,
and I love these waters, es-
pecially for bass.
Khalil and countless
others routinely spend
misty mornings and sun-
soaked afternoons on the
waters, ducking in-and-
out of juts in the shoreline,
hoping that spot is the one
that yields that trophy
bass.
I fish pretty much every
day out here, Larry
Kingsman said. And just
when you think you have it
all figured out, you dont.
Thats the beauty of it.
Youre always chasing it,
and never really catching
up to it.
Kingsman has been a St.
Clair Shores resident for
more than two decades
and now retired, he calls
fishing his full-time job.
It gives me reason to get
up and keep active, he
said. I usually like to bring
a friend or two out, but
sometimes I come out here
by myself and just enjoy
the fishing and the peace
of the lake. I take the boat
all over the lake, too.
People are too busy on the
land. Here, its just me, the
lake, and a fish or two.
Cant beat that.
Rollie French has spent
a lifetime fishing Lake St.
Clair, growing up within a
seven-iron, of the shore-
line in Harrison Township.
Im 67 years old and
Ive been fishing in Lake
St. Clair for 66 years and
11 months, he said smil-
ing. My dad used to tell
me stories taking me out
fishing when I was a
month old. So I guess you
could say I know the lake
some.
These three fishermen,
with more than a century
of experience on the lake,
had several bits of advice
to share with anglers.
That fish has got a brain
the size of a peanut,
Kingsman said. Dont put
too much thought in out-
smarting it. It isnt that
hard to do. Hes either hun-
gry or he isnt. If hes hun-
gry, hell bite. If he isnt, he
wont. I dont care how fan-
cy the lure is, or how much
you paid for it.
French had this tidbit of
information for Lake St.
Clair fishermen.
Enjoy it, he smiled. I
see these guys get out here
and they take it so darn se-
riously. Just relax and en-
joy the act of fishing. Some
of the best days of my life
were fishing this lake, and
on some of those days, I
didnt even catch much.
If you want a boat, get
one, Khalil added. But
dont think you have to
have one to be a fisher-
man. Ive got a boat and I
love it, but that doesnt stop
me from sitting on the
shore and throwing a line
out there somedays.
